Advice on best motor oil for use with E85
I've been running E85 with Mobile 1 for quite some time now. I don't know quite how to describe the phenomenon, but my oil seems to degrade into a very watery, non-oil like consistency very quickly after an oil change. I don't like it.
Am wondering if anyone out there has an idea why this happens and what alternatives there are. A friend told me to run Mobile 1 5w-40 for Turbo Diesels, but that sounds strange to me.

Re: Advice on best motor oil for use with E85
The only info I can provide is that some flex-fuel cars use acid neutralizing motor oil. Unfortunately, most synthetics ARE better at neutralizing acids (higher TBN number). Mobil recommend turbo diesel oil as well, since it has an even higher TBN number.
I don't know if that has anything to do with viscosity, but I have seen some independant long-term tests with Mobil1 that were distressing at best. A couple showed MPG's drop indicating it thickened up, while the actual viscosity index was reduced (lab tested).

Thanks for the replies. I'm about convinced to give the Diesel oil a try.
So there are no additives in the Mobile 1 5w-40 oil designed for diesel that should concern me?

I've never thought about this. My last oil change looked pretty normal and i replaced it with Castrol Synthetic...no problems to speak of...yet

Re: Advice on best motor oil for use with E85
I found this at: https://mobiloil.com/USA-English/Mot..._E85_Fuel.aspx
Question:
Which Motor Oil Is Best for Engines Using E85 Fuel
I am using E85 fuel in a converted Honda engine originally not designed for its use. One of the primary concerns of this is the formic acid created in the event of water contamination of the fuel. I have always used Mobil 1 5W-20, but am wondering if Mobil Clean or Extended Performance would be a better choice for me. What Mobil oil has the greatest amount of acid neutralizers in it?

Answer:
We recommend you use a heavy duty diesel product if you want additional acid neutralizer. We recommend you try Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 as it is based on HD diesel technology, which contains additional over-based detergents for acid neutralization.

Re: Advice on best motor oil for use with E85
Has anyone else tested different types of oil on their turbo set up?
I'm running e85 and I'd like to hear what other people have experienced.

Re: Advice on best motor oil for use with E85
I run e85 and have tried a couple synthetics from castrol, penz and notice it slightly burning off under boost then I did some research on mobile 1, 15 w50, this oil has a lot of great properties for turbocharged engines so I went ahead and tried it and its the best so far...

Me too.
I noticed that 15w50 Mobile 1, and I was curious, since I understand that not all Mobile 1 is made the same. For instance, the normal Mobile 1 we have over here has always given me low oil pressure for the designated weight, and in general I have never liked it. Some oil analysis backs up that it tends to be low in measured viscosity for the given weight also.
HOWEVER, the claim is that their 0w40 weight, if you can find it, is made in Germany where the standards are more strict for claiming "synthetic motor oil", and it's supposedly made of a pure, high quality base stock. Kind of like the Castrol Syntec 0w30 is supposedly better than the other Syntecs for the same reason.
At any rate, I wonder whether there is any data out on this Mobil 1 that makes it a reasonable thing to try for a small, high revving, turbo motor? Time to scour around on Bob Is The Oil Guy a bit and see if anything can be turned up.

Re: Advice on best motor oil for use with E85
I tried Mobil1, RP, Castrol and another oil I forget and Ethanol always left my oil tainted after just a short while. The RP was the worst because it just started leaking everywhere out of my engine and the engine was generally louder with the RP it seemed. I just kept running cheap plain Castrol and changed it every 500-750 miles to try and keep it uncontaminated with ethanol

Re: Advice on best motor oil for use with E85
I,ve used castrol,valvoline and mobile 1. I like valvoline vr1 15w-50
the motor revs better smoother it just feels better overall
but for me it is either mobile 1 or valvoline vr1 but i know ppl say 10w-30 for honda engines but if it is a syn oil shouldn't it be as light as the 1st number (15w) with the protection of the higher number(50)?

Re: Advice on best motor oil for use with E85
Great info here guys. Has anyone since the thread started used diesel oils delo/ mobil 1 with any success. There has been some discussion that the diesel oils rob power from the motor especially with the delo because it is 15/40. My car is not turbo but this is the best thread concerning the e85 oil dilema.

Re: Advice on best motor oil for use with E85
example...running 5w30 summer(warmer so its already thinner) 0w30 winter(colder so oil thickens up)....
but sticking with "30" because its all the same at operating temp and its what the car calls for.
thats why i never got when people say they use 10w30 in winter and 5w30 in summer... u want a thinner oil in colder temps b/c the colder it is the thicker the oil is. Or i recommend using say 10w30 over a 5w30 if you have oil leaks when engine is off(cold) because it would be thicker at room temp hence slowing the amount of leakage.
yay or nay?

Re: Advice on best motor oil for use with E85
i would steer away from the purp, im not on e85 and i was running it till recently, its been my experience that in general it is very thin and water like i found my car would burn it. the lucas stabilizer helps with it but but at 100 bucks an oil change i started looking at alternatives. i always ran motul 10w40 in my bikes so i tried in my car and it really seems to like it. the jug is 35.99 and my filter is 10 bucks so its alot cheaper and my car doesnt burn it.
