wot de fock is a freeze plug?

I've been reading several of the catch can threads trying to see what these are normally used for and to find a good pic of one. About all I could find was a pic of the Endyn catch can kit which I think had a pic of the freeze plug.

a freeze plug is a 22 mm plug on the front and back of block.

Are you talking about the large plugs that can be taken off with an allen wrench?

on v8's the freeze plug is in the outer "layer" of the block.located along the coolant passage. i belive this is to let the sand out of the casting.during the manufactuing process, as well as if the engine had "straight water" instead of a 50/50 mix. the freeze plug would burst out, before the block would crack... should it be left in an extremly cold climate.

anyone correct me if im wrong.

My guess is he is looking for a freeze plug for to plug the stock "Black Box" port on the back of the block. They kinda look like a small cake pan, well on that is 34.3mm around.

I remeber Earl had posted some where about a standard sized freeze plug that would fit. One that you can pick up from any automotive parts store.

Most freeze plugs are made out of brass.

34.3mm = 1.35039"

1 11/32 = 1.34375" = 34.29991mm

1 3/8" = 1.375 = 34.935mm

I don't know if they are standard sizes, but that would be about as close as you could get.

It's not going to be made of aluminum. The one I bought was steel. Now I have an aluminum Z10 plug for my new block. I got the Z10 because I was thinking about tapping it and using it as a return line for the catch can, or as an extra crankcase vent. It's just a plug right now, and it would be easier to remove if I need to.

for the guy that didin't know about the freeze plug.....a common thing to do up north is to replace those plugs with block heaters. Small electric heaters you plug into your house outlet at night to keep the block warm. Or at least keep it from freezing up.

I bought mine at the local auto parts shop, they had it behind the counter. Try using the imperial size, not the metric!

looks nice, but it's on the back of the block, and nobody will know it's there except for you.

for functionality purposes, go to autozone. i got one for my block last week, and it was a buck

Wassup Jake,

Was that the autozone "in town" that you went to? you wouldn't happen to remember what the part number is would you? or should I just go in there and ask for a xxx mm aluminum freeze plug?

with all the running around trying to find parts for everything in this build... it's nice to sometimes just call the place or go online, get the part you need for your car and it's done... VS trial and error trying to get one to fit from local store...

with all the money spent whats another $20...
you pay for convenience.

fair enough man, i know how it goes. and just so you know, i didn't mean to critisize your purchase in any way. i secretely wish i had gotten the whole z10 breather kit anyway. i didn't really save that much time buying everything seperately, although it was a fun little project.
