Default eCtune ecu "found" but no data will display.

I have been trying to get my ecu to connect to my laptop and i can test my connection and eCtune will find my ecu but all of the "datalog" drop down menu is grayed out so i cant select "connect".

I suspect that my datalog cable may be to blame? I am not using the Hulog, is the Hulog required?

I am using this cable from xenocron

Do you have a valid eCtune license?

When you open a calibration does the connection link in the datalog drop down become active? If not it sounds like you are having a licensing issue. Even if I don't have my data cable hooked up I still have the option to connect.

ok so you have the free datalog version. You should be able to hook up your ECU to your laptop and retrieve the eCtune ROM that is on it, as long as it has an eCtune chip installed.

Do you have any sort of emulator hardware, a Moates Ostrich or a Demon for this ECU? A bit more information on what it is that you are working with would help a lot! What ECU is it, who chipped it, & what hardware do you have aside from an ECU and cable (if any).

To obtain a license you should go to the website and see what is required; http://www.ectune.com/eCtune/AboutFe...7/Default.aspx

I am using a p28 that does have a Ectune chip done by illgarage in chicago. I don't have any emulator, only the data cable that I posted a link for in my op.

Make sure you have your datalog cable connected in the proper orientation.

USB Datalogging Cable ECU SIDE

Black = Ground (GND)
White = Receive (RX)
Empty = +5V
Red = Transmit (TX)

Corresponding CN2 plug
Pin 1 = GND
Pin 2 = TX
Pin 3 = +5v (not used with USB)
Pin 4 = Rx
Pin 5 = Not used

I'm not as familiar with the operations of the Free Data logging version of the software. So the details of when the option to connect via datalog is no longer greyed out is a mystery to me.

What version of eCtune do you have installed?
When you open eCtune and the eCtune loading window pops up. What version is displayed? Or once eCtune is running you can go to the "Help" menu and select "about" and the first line will tell you what version you have installed.

Im not sure the free version will actually datalog...been a long time since I tested that.

Make sure J12 is removed as well if you are using a US ECU.

i dont understand how that cable would work. wouldnt you need drivers of some sort installed on the computer or it to recognize the ecu? it says honda ecu but i dont know if i believe that much. why would hulog and this cable be the same price? plus if it is as simple as it looks i would rather make my own cable. let us know if you get it to work

That cable is pretty much the same as the Hulog. It does require the same FTDI drivers and there are instructions on the website as to how to use it.

Oh and these cables are very simple and you can make them yourself. There are some DIY threads on the internet about using an older model Nokia phone cable to make an RS232 to TTl data cable

Is it the Pro_Ostrich 2.3r17 or does it just say 2.3r17?

strange that illgarage is not mentioned in the authorized tuners on eCtune site. -->http://www.ectune.com/AuthorizedTune...3/Default.aspx
all though updates to the site are not rapid these days.

for those that don't know, the free version of eCtune is called the Datalogger version --> http://www.ectune.com/eCtune/Version...9/Default.aspx
it will datalog and read the maps but you can not change anything in the maps or upload any changes.

I'm guessing drivers or incorrect port settings in eCtune.

Even with the incorrect settings and drivers the datalog connect button is still available in my version of eCtune. (Pro_Demon 0.0.2.3r17)

If I click on it it then gives me the "Failed to open port: COM**" = incorrect port settings or "ISR connect error" ECU not powered or cable not connected.

The OP doesn't even have the option to click on connect. Sounds like a software or license issue.

EG6 Love,
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software and drivers?

says Pro_Demon before the version, but I am not using a demon.

I have played with the comm ports a bit and as of now I am using Com port 5.

I had the same issue last year with the menu being grayed out. This is a different computer I am using now from last year and I just downloaded eCtune a couple weeks ago.

I am unfamiliar with drivers?

Thanks for all your help thus far.

So is eCtune free to datalog? I wanted to try it out and see how it works since I'm probably going to switch from Crome to eCtune (Neptune is a close second but I like the eCtune interface better). If I tuned my car on Crome, can I datalog using eCtune?

I'm not 100% on this but should it say Datalog instead of Pro_Demon?

Did you download the software from the datalog link on eCtune? Also, did you instal any drivers when you installed the software? You need the proper USB drivers in order for the USB datalog cable to connect to the ECU.

Here is a spot to down load the drivers for your cable; http://www.xenocron.com/install/USB-Board.htm

alright, I figured it out. I ended up downloading eCtune again and this time it ended up working. I didn't even need to install any additional drivers. Just plug in my datalog cable, hit connect and BAM, datalogging. I must have downloaded from the wrong link or something. Version still says Pro Demon, FYI. I really appreciate your help GhostAccord.

Maybe you or someone can explain why my CEL on the dash DOES work but when I went to datalog it shows that my MIL is ON for a code 20, electronic load detector but the light in my cluster is not illuminated? is it because an ELD is not a high priority code?

I found that when I clear the code I have about a 4 second window where I can make a pull into vtec with my AFR's where there should be. when the MIL come back i begin to run very rich, only in vtec. The reason I wanted to datalog was to see why I was running so rich and i think that this MIL (that i didnt know i had) is my cause.

MrDomino, Yes you can datalog for free with eCtune as long as you have an eCtuned chip. All you can do is watch data, you can't make any changes to the ROM. You must install a 4 pin header in your ecu and buy/make a data cable to go from your header you installed to your computer.
