Re: What would be an alternative to skinnies
I don't understand the reason behind trying to rig skinnies on your car if you can't afford actual race skinnies? I've seen plenty of cars running 9's on regular street wheels n tires in the rear, so it's not a must. why put yourself and the other car racing next to you at risk?
I know so many people that dont know why others run them...

Re: What would be an alternative to skinnies
why do people run skinnies...is the car more stable at high speeds? is it faster cause of less drag...? ive seen drag cars fishtail with skinnies i dont think that would happen with a good set of regular size tires....

Ill go to the local moto tire shop and see if i can find some older front bike tires.. something flat no tread.. Im using these for :stiffness, aerodynamics, rotational mass, weight in genaral.. So i do know why i need them LOL..im not 18 and i dont do it just to be cool.. I seriously want a stiff tire and narrow.. 60psi stiff

I just think they look cool. Maybe my signature shows that, maybe it doesn't.
There are some light, narrow old vw 13's as well.

I believe some tracks have and can kick someone out if they dont have proper tires. I remember along time ago, someone ran 15" spares from a different car. They looked like skinnies but they didnt approve it since it wasnt an acceptable tread pattern for track use.
I guess for competition use, you just dont want to put yourself in a situation that they can potentially DQ you.

To the OP, I'm just answering you original post with what i believe is the safest/best option for you. I just think that when you build a car of this caliber that you should either just get skinnies or run a regular wheel and tire. Its like saying you are going to build a motor with all the best parts with the best turbo kit to make over 1000 whp and running it on a basemap I don't know about you but living dangerously at over 120mph is a stupid thing to do when you are risking you life, others around you and not to mention your car that you have probably spent wayy too much money on.

Re: What would be an alternative to skinnies
why?
rotational weight and cost (145-80-13 are the cheapest tires i can get )
makes for a lot of oversteer on the street tough, no problem at all on the track (no corners )
ran 160+mph with them, but car acted kinda nervous at that speeds on the street with those tires

Re: What would be an alternative to skinnies
I run skinnies cause they look cool, Not because of any of the benefits that they offer over a conventional "normal, regular, street" sized wheel and tire package. I just built my car from copying and pasting other peoples setup and I just hope that I can have a super cool great setup MAN.

Re: What would be an alternative to skinnies
Just for grins, a pal cut 2" out of a stock VW wheel for us to make 4" wide stockers. We went to Walmart and bought the tallest 14" tire they had, mounted it up and pumped it to 50lbs. The roll resistance is good but it's not the lightest. The goal was to look stock so we could really mess with the local musclecar guys. This was pretty much our 11.0 index setup.

$400 is cheap for rear skinnies and tires.
I have 5x114.3 ITR setup and drag wheels are $400+ per wheel without tires.
