Default Questions regarding NHRA/NDRA Legal Block

Well lets first start of with basics. The block in question is a 96 GSR block, but the numbers/letters have been shaved off years ago. The entire block has been shaved and polished. Problem is I don't know if I can legally run T4/SFWD with this block. So should I attempt to finish the build, or just try to get another block?

Thanks.

Dart blocks are legal in t4 and do not have any numbers on them. I dont think it will be legal for sfwd.

Take a look at the engine section of the rules for NHRA Hot Rod, then compare them to SFWD and tell me how any block (aftermarket or not) that is "based on" a production piece is illegal for SFWD.

Sport Front:

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">ENGINE:
Engine swaps permitted. Engine must be from same manufacturer
as body. Engine must be overhead-cam, production-based design.
Maximum two power adders. Redundant power adders, such as a
dual stage nitrous system or twin turbos, will be counted as one
power adder. Engine must be in stock, transverse configuration.
Dry sump oil system, or external oil pumps prohibited unless OEM
equipped and engine is using complete OEM oiling system.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Hot Rod:

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">ENGINE:
Maximum displacement: 2.5 liter (152.50 cid). Engine swap
permitted, but must be from same manufacturer as body. OEM
block and head mandatory. 4-cylinder only. Maximum two power
adders permitted. Redundant power adders, such as a dual-stage
nitrous system, will be counted as one power adder. Dry sump
permitted. Use of vacuum pump for evacuation of crankcase
pressure permitted. All engine-block and cylinder-head castings
must be, or have been, available in a production car or truck from a
recognized OEM assembly line with a minimum production run of
5,000 units.
</TD></TR></TABLE>

Clearly, the Hot Rod rules prohibit non-OEM blocks and heads. If the NHRA meant to forbid them in SFWD, then they would have used the same wording, but they don't.

Just sayin...

I could have sworn I had read something a few months back about NHRA not allowing non-oem blocks. I know that its not legal in allmotor to run dart blocks. I dunno, but it seems like its okay to run a OEM GSR P72 block even if it has no serial number on it.

Yeah, better to email NHRA directly. pcvengros@nhra.com

Pat Cvengros, he's the tech director for the series this year. BTW, the Dart block is legal for SFWD in NHRA.

As far as you know, has anybody actually run one, though?

BTW, I still owe you lunch.

I can't name anyone off the top of my head, but yes, there have been a few Dart blocks, both in SFWD and Street Stock I believe.

I'll call you for the lunch. Free lunches are at the top of my list these days.

is the vin plate still on the bottom part of the motor near the pan rail? if so, i dont think it will be a problem if you keep the title with you to show what block it is. Your best bet is to email them though

You should be able to run it without a problem. Why would you need a VIN for the track?

I would assume to prove its not stolen. Not sure. My only fear is that I'm gonna send this block to get sleeved and then find out I can use it. Then I'll be pissed and out money. My other concern is even if I have the papers, theres no vin on the block so how can they really tell its mine. I tell you don't try to use a block from a show car...

I was just told by an NHRA official that I did not have to worry, that the block will pass tech.
