Default My new Race Car - D Series Powered. (Long/Pics)

Hi Folks,

Here are some pics of a new project I'm working on along with John @ ETDRacing.com. We will be campaigning this car in North America along with the Vibrant/ETD Racing All-Motor CRX.

John used to campaign the car with a different driver here in Canada 3-4 years ago and the car was sitting in his garage ever since. We were originally going to build a B series Nitrous car (posted a thread before, but can't seem to locate it via search), but been a Turbo guy, I just had to have boost and wanted to do something a little different.

Goals are to get this D16 in the 9s using a Large Turbocharger and Nitrous if needed.

Here are a few pics of the car when it was run before with a B series engine.

Here are some of the in-progress pictures over the last month or so. We are taking our time with a completion goal of Feb 2005.

MB Race Products Solid Rear axle, along with Weld Magnum 2 piece wheels and MH tires.

Aluminum Dash built by John @ ETDRacing.com. Special Thanks to Stewart Warner and Ignited Performance for the electronics in the dash. Don't worry, I don't have 3 shift lights. Yellow is shift, Blue is Oil Pressure and Red is either A/F warning and/or Water Temp warning. (Basically the important stuff)

Switch Panel with Ignited Performance switches and status lights. When fuse blows the status light will turn off for quick indication. Red switches for ECU & Fuel. Blue for Fan and Water Pump and Green for Lights (Soon to be yellow)

Interior Shot - Starting to look like a Race Car. Excuse the Floor mat, just don't want to destroy the painted floor while I'm working on the car. Seat is a Sparco Sprint with 3" Sparco Harness (Stolen from my Pro-Street Drag Car)

Staging Brake along with B&M Line Lock are now in position. Just need a few fittings to plumb rear brakes. (MB/Wilwood setup)

False Floor/Wiring panel for electronics/ecu. ECU/Fuse panel flips up for access to wiring. ECU is the FJO Racing electronics 341B. (Http://www.fjoracing.com) Thanks to FJO Racing for your ongoing support with my past and present race car projects. Everything is wired on the ECU except a few plugs on the Engine harness which is missing in the pic.

Another pic of the dash. 1 EGT per cylinder. These are the Stewart Warner Maximum EGT with the RACE EGT Probs. Red switch on dash is Nitrous arm and Nitrous Purge.

Stocker D16z6 which is current in use for mocking up wiring, fuel and Turbo setup.

Weld Import Magnum 15x8 wheels with 24.5" slicks. (I will not be using these slicks. We used to run these on our All-Motor car, but we are changing the setup on it for 2005 and I will be using these wheels with some 26" Goodyear Eagle slicks.)

Goodyear 26" Slicks and Tubes. Can't wait to get these mount on my rims and on the car for some pics!

MB Race Products rear hatch and Doors. Spoon style rear spoiler with light (works for night races) and all lexan windows (MR-10). Damn, I love the way the skinnys on the back tuck!

Sparco Sprint and 5 Point Harness.

Driver's view of dash, minus the steering wheel.

Close-up of EGTs, Fuel Pressure and Oil Temp. Nevermind the Important Nitrous Purge and arm switches.

View from the back seat

Wilwood Front Drag Brake setup. Current not on my car, but planning to use the same kit on this car also.

Door Shot. Ran out of sticker goo remover. Yep! This is a Canadian car.

I'd like to thank my current sponsors. ETDRacing.com, Vibrant Performance, Stewart Warner Performance, FJO Racing Electronics and Ignited Perforamance. There help and support really makes this possible. I hope to document a great deal of this build and will post pictures when I have them available.

Thanks for reading this long posts, and if you have any questions let me know.

very nice craftsmanship.

Did you guys ever get the nitrous setup running or did you guys just ditch the project for the current turbo project?

We have done the Nitrous setup before in a street car. but never did do it in this car. I purchased the sleeves, Tranny and a whole bunch of other parts, but then we changed our minds. Ended up selling most of the stuff I could not use and traded my B series Darton sleeves for some D series sleeves when they arrive at the Canadian distributor in December.

I run Turbo and Nitrous on my Miata with great success. Hope to transport the success to this car, but with a lot bigger turbo. Probably a GT40 of some combination.

Dov..

GT42 is just toooooo big for the D16. GT40 is still going to be on the big side, but I think it should work out well. Nevermind the Turbo limitations which are in HotRod and Pro 4 Cylinder. That GT42 is just toooo big.

Can't wait to get the Turbo, want to start fabbing up the manifold, but need my intercooler (On the way) and Turbo so John and I can start on the engine bay.

Clayton - I know it is a bunch of gauges, but I need the weight and I want to know what is going on.

This car is so light, now it should be around 1800lbs inc. me when setup for boost only.

Dov is that the pic of the street gt 42 rx7 that magnus is building? Hell he tuned the RX7 owned by Brian at Nitrious Express RX-7 to 850 whp, what the heck is that going to push!!! :banghead:

Jen's car is going to pump!! going to be fun, but honestly it shouldn't be hard to push into the 9's with a big motor like what she is going to use. Chassis is solid!

Why are you going to use an inner tube?? Others on here smarter than I can correct me if I am wrong, but you should not run them. Makes it really hard to balance, among other things.

I know John @ MH mentions that running a tube is almost a MUST and recommends is (See current thread in Drag Racing).

My understanding is that it is safer and easier to control tire pressure when running a tube.

I'm going to give you a call sometime and pick your brain on a few things.
Can't wait to get this car finished and show what a D series motor can do.

Thanks to everyone for the support, I will ensure you are kept in the loop on the progress as parts arrive and work is done.

No big deal dude... We will be running 1 EGT per cylinder. I will be able to adjust fuel per cylinder and the EGT numbers will assist me with identifying which cylinders need more or less fuel.

Thanks for the folks!
