my first competitive all motor drag build
So I havent posted results of my build and races on here in a while. Last time I was turbo and posted about finally getting into the 10s. Since then I did a new turbo build and went 10.02 @ 150mph, but threw a rod the next hit. So I decided to take a different route the next season, all motor. Specifically the All Motor Sport class for IFO.
So, Id like to share my results for this season in my first competitive all motor drag build.
First off, Id like to thank Ray at Fusionworks racing for having the patients to deal with me and my constant questions. Ray did a great job tuning the car. I couldnt have done it without him. I also want to thank Jason Lumpkin and Amary Lozada w/ALR for the advice to help me get here.
92 civic (EG) its a former SFWD car that decided to play in the AMS class until a new turbo motor is built.
It still has a full roll cage and drag suspension
I put in full interior, front and back seats. And carpet. It meets all AMS class rules as stated by Cliff (IFO)
Some things are kept a secret, only a few know what they are. Some of the rest are kinda obvious just by looking at the motor, no point in hiding that. Haha.
Motor:
GSR Block
Eagle Rods
Supertech Pistons: size and compression secret
GSR cylinder head: specs secret
supertech valvetrain
Kelford cams
Skunk2 ultra series IM
skunk2 90mm TB
PLM V2 header connected to full exhaust
Ignition: M&W Pro 10 left over from the turbo setup. Overkill, but you can never have to much ignition.
MSD cap
NGK plug wires
Fuel system & fuel: secret
Drive train:
Exedy clutch
gears: ratios secret
Gear-X final: ratio secret
Old DSS axles stg 5 axles
M&H 22x8x13
Results:
Power: a little of a secret, but Ill say over 220 on a dyno dynamics (estimated over 250 on a dynojet)
2 first place trophys. (Wichita and 9/14 Noble.) And one second place in Noble (April)
Wichita 13.11, 12.9, 12.4 for the win
1st Noble, 12.7s all day @ 109mph
Fusionworks drags in wichita, 12.1s and 12.0@114mph
2nd Noble, 12.071@110, 12.012@110, 12.011@113 and 11.934@113 for the win
I accomplished 2 goals. 1st was to ensure I was in the 12s. 2nd try to break the 11s. And I did on the very last pass taking the win. Couldnt as for a better end to the season.

Re: my first competitive all motor drag build
Ha, I had a feeling you'd say something. :p
To be honest though, I might have to get bigger tires. It all depends on if I make any changes or not. Im just about out of gear at the end of the track. If I make any more power I'm sure to run out of gear. I have a set of 24.5s from my turbo setup I can use. But we'll see what I do.
And thanks everyone. I worked hard and it feels good to know people appreciate what im doing.

If I'd have to guess what gas you are on it would be VP m1 or m5.
There is not much cars that run in all motor class at ifo events forgot when the last time there was a full class in either all motor classes. Cliff might as well combine the all motor classes.

Re: my first competitive all motor drag build
The All Motor Sport class has an okay turn out. We had a 5 car field at our last event at Noble, OK. Im in the Mid-west region and the all motor class seems to be dying. Im trying really hard to get more people to come out.
Ill get a breakdown of the slip a little later today. I dont have it on me right now. I can say at the least the 60' was a 1.7 and it was 11.93@113.85. But Ill get the rest of the slip later.

Re: my first competitive all motor drag build
Same reason any other engine/race car builder builder keeps things to themselves.
If I let out what Im doing, people will take notes and copy. I have to stay competitive. There was already one guy at the track that saw something I was doing that no one else was and he told me that he was going to do the same and that he will be ready for me next season. While Im happy to help keep the class going and help where I can, I dont want people taking my ideas that keep me competitive and using them against me. Its only a few things, the rest is no big deal.

Re: my first competitive all motor drag build
Im not exactly sure. I havent had a chance to put it on the scales. Its probably closer to 2100 with me in it. Its a CX model, so it already started out pretty light. Add the cage and then take away all the weight reduction.
Getting it corner scaled is something I plan on doing before next season. Get my suspension set up better and do an alignment to try and lower my 60'. After that Ill know how much it weighs.

Are you still running AMS class or jumping into AMP class next season? Hope to see you run AMP class next season.

I hate to be the one to say it, but although 11.9-12.1 ETs on an NA bseries are good times. There's really no reason to act like the setup is soo top secret! any basic high comp, big cams, built head b20vtec making 230whp+ will run these or better numbers in a lightweight hatch! It's been done numerous times.

Re: my first competitive all motor drag build
I might do some test n tunes and strip the car to see what I run. If I can get way deeper in the 11s, then I may. But we'll have to see.

Re: my first competitive all motor drag build
Would love to come out and play but, i wont be back for awhile. Due to daddy duties the slip break down is weird though 11's with a 1.7 60ft tells me you was spinning and figured you powered through but 113 mph is rather low, never the less congrats on your acheivemnets, Theres really no secrets theres just combos that work better hell we dropped a sh*t ton of compression and got near the same results as our 14.1 comp motor

In our region, there really are not a whole lot of AMS cars. And you forget, we are AMS so we have to run full exhaust and interior, we stay somewhat heavier than most 11 second all motor cars. Its tougher to get there. In this region Ive only seen a few AMS cars that have gotten low 12 second passes, let alone touched 11s. Plus, my car still has a full cage from its turbo days. So its a little heavier.
The bottom line is, I have to keep some of the stuff Im doing a secret (while staying in the rules) or others will copy, and they already are. I have to stay one step ahead of my competition because I have a slight disadvantage with my cage. And I do not plan to cut the cage up.

Now dont forget, I have a heavier car than most, especially you. The beginning of the season I was trapping 109. Then I dropped some weight and gained a little power, just a little, but that was enough to get up to 114. I know if I didnt have the cage, I would be even higher, or if I was in a CRX without a cage.
And you're right, I was spinning. I didnt have time to mess with it, as I didnt want to risk messing up going into eliminations. I still have some fuel left and may try to his some test n tunes and dial it in. I did hit a 1.6 in Wichita, but it was a cold day with 7psi tire pressure and launching high. Since the temp is up, I havnt been able to drop below a 1.7. Ill get it though.

Re: my first competitive all motor drag build
If your on a 89 crank I'd go up to a 23 tire if not run ur old 24s with more air, I don't worry about holding a competitive edge with other racers I love neck to neck ****, when Dustin was running AMS with me

Re: my first competitive all motor drag build
Great post and congratulations to you hondaracing84. I have one question, I am shopping around for proper suspension for a drag set for my EK. What do you recommend and also spring rates that I should be using?
Thanks for any advice on the matter.

Re: my first competitive all motor drag build
I guess the suspension is one thing I didnt post. I thought I did. Im currently running the Blox Drag pro series front and back. I bought it for my turbo setup and it seems to be working well for my all motor setup. I just need to corner balance to take full advantage of them, but out of the box and mild setup, they worked great for me. The spring rates for these are 12k up front and 18k in the rear. And Ill tell you what, they are super stiff. Not really fun on the street, but great on the track.
I dont really know what others are using on their all motor setups. I never did the research since I planned on just using these from my turbo setup. I know those spring rates are what most turbo track guys use, thats why I chose them, but Im actually curious myself as to what the all motor guys generally use.

Re: my first competitive all motor drag build
Ill be honest, I went into this season wanting to win. I went 6 or so years not really caring, just trying to go fast. No wins. When I built this motor, I felt like I wanted to be one of the top guys in my class, at least in my region. While I did want to win at other races in past seasons, I didnt really care if I lost. I just wanted to race. I still do, and I still love it to death, but I wanted to accomplish something with it. So thats why Im being a little more competitive with it. Maybe I just need to get it out of my system. Ill be honest though, in Noble, there was a CRX that was running low 12s that was going to be great competition for me and I was really looking forward to that race. He broke an axle and I got a bye. I was a little disappointed, because I wanted the final round to be a really good race.
