Default Indy 2007.

well this was one of the first races i have been prepared for early, and didnt have to do 20 hours of work to the car 10 hours before we had to leave. i knew that the car was either going to run great, or the whole weekend would be a disaster. im not sure if disaster is even the right word.

friday morning we attempt to leave at 4am to try to make it there with enough time to check out the city and all that good stuff. we leave about an hour late, which isnt all that bad. we stop a handfull of times for gas, bathroom breaks, food, etc and make it there around 5 oclock or so. i drove the entire way, so im pretty excited to be done driving.

everything seems well friday night so we get to the track saturday morning and get ready to make our first run. the weekend before indy, i did some testing and the car went 9.71 and then 9.72 with lots of room for improvement, but the car was running very well so i didnt touch anything before we left, so there is no reason it shouldnt run good.

first run the car leaves ok....once i getin 3rd gear it just feels like somebody put an extra 3000lbs in the trunk, the car isnt going anywhere. get it into 4th and its even worse so i just let off. i have no idea how or why the car is running like crap and figure its going to be a 10.4 pass or so. get my timeslip and its a 9.9 which surprises the hell out of me. looking at the timeslip the alignment and few other things i did to get the car to hook up better def. worked. go to pull the dattalog, laptop crashes and get no info.

change a couple things make another pass. exact same thing happens and coast to another 9.9, which again i thought was going to be a mid 10 second pass. get on the return road to do fuel sample test, go to start the car and all i get is a "click" starter goes bad. looks like my luck is starting to kick in. check out the dattalog and nothing realy seems out of the ordinary. weird.

nobody at the track has a starter so we send jeff and jenny out to get one. they try 4 differnt auto parts stores and nobody has one, finally the 5th store has one and the damn things nearly 200 bucks. while they were gone julian from tunerzine has a starter and lets me use it to make 3rd round.

change a few more things before third round. make it though first and second gear and get into 3rd and the car feels back to normal other than im going towards the centerline real hard. half way through 3rd i have to lift or im going to end up in the other lane. car coasts to a 10.1 @ 115 in neutral. catchcan is mounted too low and overflows, oils down the track, everybody is pissed. worse than that this pass was nearly a tenth and a half faster than my 9.51 pass to the 330. aem crashes, no dattalog

BS at the track for a while, fix the catchcan and clean up all the oil. leave the track at 3am and wake up at 6am so we can make morning qualifier. excited as can be because the car is actually running right again, i get politely asked not to make a 3rd round qualifier, and if i do and spill oil on the track i will be DQ'ed. damn.

sit out and watch everybody fly down the track...morning air and track were both very good. no better time to make a fast pass as tony showed how good the track was. get ready for first round, everything seems great...got new plugs in the car, boost is up a little bit down low, should be ready to roll

line up against courtney, we both have decent lights, my 60's a little quicker...get it in 2nd gear and he pulls a way a little bit, put it in 3rd and the car is running great, but is just SLOW. look at the boost gauge and realize im running spring pressure, somehow the boost controller is turned off

run the car to a 10.2 @ 134 at spring pressure, with 12psi springs in the gates. completely pissed off at the situation, im still amazed the car ran that fast at that low of boost. all kinds of drama starts here because of track issues that went on during our pass. my boost was down so courtney easily drove past me, but everybody at the track thinks we need to redo the pass.

watch the rest of the event and try to make one last open run to see what the car can do. burnout is great...get to the line and the antilag wont work. aem box def. has some issues...it has to go back, one more thing to worry about. throw the car in the trailor and head home.

not even a half our into or drive we stop for some food. walk from the truck past he trailor and hear air pissing out of the trailor tire. have a spare tire for the truck, but not for the trailor. 3 hours later we get back on the road. not a good start at all, we make it on the highway and it starts raining so hard you cant see 3 feet in front of you. pull over for another half our. pull back on the road, 30 min later, more heavy rain and have to stop. the next few hours go pretty well. around 6am, in the mountains, still nearly 4 hours away from home i get woken up by the rumble strips (im asleep in the back). i figure im dead and we are about to fly off the side of the mountain...but sander asks me a few questions about the truck. odd. pull back onto the highway...truck feels like it has some electrical problems that dont want to let it accelerate. go to turn the key off and here a few clunks. get out and look...thet railor is covered in oil, the truck is pissing oil out of the bottom, and the entire engine bay is covered in oil. oil pressure still read good when the truck was running, but there isnt a drop of oil on the dipstick. somehow none of us smelt oil or anything. this is bad.

call AAA and they cover 100 miles of towing.....my truck. we are 200 miles from home and have a trailor. this is going to be expensive. they send a truck out for us which takes almost an hour and a half to get there. i had to take a dump so bad i thought i was going to die, so that hour and a half felt like 5 hours. they finally show up with a rollback and a f250. put the truck on the rollback and then it starts to rain its *** off again. wonderfull. put the trailor on the f250 and drive 10 miles or so to their repair station to get the rollback ready to take the tuck and the trailor. one of the connecstions on the trailor breaks just to make things awesome. this takes probably an hour or 2, the driver says he will be gone for 10 min to go change, he's gone for about a half hour. we finally get back on the road, with 6 people in a truck thats uncomfortable to have 4 people in. still in the mountains, if we approach a hill doing 70, by the time we get to the top of it the trucks full throttle and going about 25mph. the drive takes forever and the temp is probably -30 degree's in the truck, we are all freezing our asses off and the driver wont leave the AC off for more than 4 min. during the drive the driver didnt hook up the trailor lights correctly and now the cord to plug into my truck is completely destroyed and needs to be replaced since it drug the ground the entire drive.

so 24 hours later we make it home. i have a truck that has a very good possibility of needing a new motor, a racecar with issues and a computer that doesnt work, and where in the hell im going to come up with the money to fix this, i have no idea. have to do some checking out of the truck today to see how bad it is (of course its raining) depending on how bad the truck is will make up my decision if its time to just part out everything and take some time off. if that was to happen i have a few idea's in mind of how to possibly still be out and racing..but who knows if any of that will come through. i dont know the first thing about a diesel, so i guess i get to take a crash course in them now. this thing sure doesnt look easy to work on! i just hope it doesnt need a motor.

this thread turned out about 40 times longer than expected....sorry about that. back to work...looks like lots of long hours. ive spent well over 2 grand in unexpected costs this weekend and money was tight before i left. what a bad weekend

keep your head up Joe, sometimes when it rain it pours. Take a week off from looking at the race car and you'll have new energy again.

As for the truck, good luck, but I'm sure you'll be able to figure out diesel engines.

The one thing you didn't mention has to be the smell of the AAA driver, every time I've had the pleasure of a 200 mile tow from one, I have had to have the guy that hasn't had a shower in 2 years and doesn't know what a toothbrush is. Plus they must smoke atleast 3 cigarettes every minute.

But dont' give up, you've come too far for that. The car did look great at Indy, just wasn't your weekend.

sorry to hear about the misfortune... but keep your head up... maybe walk a way for a little while, then it would be so hard looking at the problems, and you might see them in a diffrent light.

Good luck, and im sure there is a bunch of info about those desiel trucks on the net...

Damn Joe I hate to hear you had all this trouble. It was good talking to you face to face though. I hope to see you at the next event. Maybe with a BEP S372 on there.

Keep your head up and let me know if there is anything we can do to help you.

Wow...potentially needing a new race motor, new diesel motor, having to pay the towing bill, possibly needing a new AEM...A wise man once said something to me. And I quote:

isnt that the truth andrea! you just get to a point where you have to take a step back and really figure out what you NEED to do. talk about an expensive weekend.

the only good news is that the racemotor is 2 full seasons old and still has perfect compression and leak down. remounting the catchcan fixed the problems with that.

however i'd much rather be replacing/repairing the honda motor than the diesel

its so frustrating seeing some of these other teams having so many spare parts and motors and what seems to be an endless amount of funding (even in the sportsman class's now). oh well, maybe one day we can get to that point.

I feel ya Joe. We trashed 2 new motors last year and had to eat a Renegade payment every month for a year when it just sat there.

Look at it this way Joe, it can only get better.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck that weekend Joe. It sounds like it was really shitty. Just remember that good things happen to good people, and you're definitely a good person. I'd suggest not looking at your racecar for a week or 2, it'll reduce the amount of frustration you're feeling towards the whole situation. Just work on customer's cars, make some ends, and go at it strong again.

Ha, we can't afford to pay attention right now... I think a Toter might be out of the question.

Don't worry, we will bounce back. This is how the world works.. or at least ours? Everything horrible comes at one time, But hey.. it doesn't seem like it can get any worse than it is right now (knock on wood.)

Joe has more motivation and drive for success than anyone I have ever known, and knowing him, this will only give him more reason to succeed.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, It's people like you that make us realize why drag racing is even worth the money sometimes.

Ain't that the truth, Ryan and I think the same thing.

Sorry to hear about the drive home.

All this and you get 8-9mpg towing. For us 875 miles one way. Yes it's expensive, but it's also enjoyable meeting with people from different areas that have the same intrest. As you know we all have had the same type luck at one time or another.

I just want to say it was nice having breakfast with you guy's Saturday morning and thanks for all the help you have been to Ryan and I. Jeff really wants you to do well and is a good friend. You are surrounded by great people. You fortunute to have someone like Jenny. Your lucky to have talented people like sander with you. Take a deep breath, count to 10 and get after it. Your a talented guy that can get this figured out. You have the tallent and the knowledge. You wouldn't come as far as you have if you didn't.

Hope to see you this weekend at MIR.

Joe keep your head up all bad things come in spurts of 3. It can only get better.

I know what would chear you up. A nice big party at your place this friday. You can charge a 5 dollar cover to help get some money towards your racing. I am sure people would be more then happy to throw in some money and if the turn out is like the last part you will be back up and running in no time.

(a conversation joe and i had when the trailer tire started leaking)

sander: you know joe, at this point i realize you must hate your life, and i can understand that. I at this point hate my life right now also. The real killer is that i even hate your life!

joe: man, that is bad.

You know though, the funny horrible stuff, are the things that weren't written in this post, the things that happen to everyone that just totally **** on a bad day. Dropping a bottle of slime that you just bought 60 seconds ago, spilling it everywhere, sheeting rain, fog, 70 detour sending you through mt everest with the trailer and a truck that had tired *** brakes, shocks, and an engine, and to top it off we broke down on the absolute coldest day in august.

and all of this was before the truck dropped the oil, at 6am on 68. 200 mi away.

I still had a good time regardless (well at least now that im home!)

you'll be fine joW.
