High HP cars: What Radiator/fan/shroud combo are you guys using?
Seem like my old C&R racing radiator w/ the fan that came with it is not sufficient enough to conquer the heat the motor is making. After making a pass at the 1/8 mile track and dyno passes, the car would overheat to 220*+. Please any advice would greatly appreciated.
Here's it shows I have to cut an opening just for the air to go to the radiator to keep the heat down.

I've battled with this issue for 13 years, and still haven't found a solution yet. my next attempt will be making a custom radiator using a 3" thick intercooler core, and huge bottom tank and run a good quality fan, just need access to an aluminum welder.

Im running a tucked VW Scirocco raiator with a single 12" Spal fan one below the best unit no shroud. Car runs cool in texas heat. That giant FMIC is impeading airflow quite a bit too on your setup. I have the same one. Be sure you have an air gap between the radiator and intercooler too.
With the half core units air flow is key. Blocking off air flow on driver side is needed and squeezing a 14" fan on the radiator will act like a shroud seeing it covers 98% of the cooling surface and will flow a **** ton of air vs a 12" fan. That's what i used to run and it kept the car very cool.

There's some air gap between the intercooler and the radiator, i"m thinking maybe it's time to upgrade to a new radiator/fan and maybe use shroud as well. What do you guys think about SF drag race radiator w/ fan & shroud? For $550, do you guys think this setup works best? Here's the SF drag race radiator:

I need a custom sized one for my setup so I've been doing a bit of searching. I haven't found a lot of info about how well they cool over a conventional half rad however. SF sells the filler neck for $150 I believe. Fcs race makes a nice setup, CNY and DP(needs elec pump) all make something similar.

do you know the details on the current fan? pusher or puller? A nice SPAL fan makes a world of difference. I battled heat issues for years on street cars and finally got a nice shroud and fan with Koyo radiator and all issues were gone.
In your case though i'm not sure you would have the fan run during the pass. But you could quickly cool the car back down after the pass.

I don't think I can fit the scirroco radiator in my car. My current radiator is very close to the uppipe already. Care to share how you guys got it to fit? Thanks.

Here is a crappy pic of me fitting mine in my EF. I do not have much room at all in that thing, especially since it also has an intercooler on the front. I have a little mount tigged to the radiator that I bolt to the cross member of the traction bar.

You need a better fan. A spal fan would drop the temps. I had a similar issue. Also coating my manifold and turbo and water wetter helped. E85 also helped

Try a spal fan first I switched to one and it made a huge difference
This is the one I used

Here we go with the fan nonsense. Yes a good fan is good to have but the motor should run normal operating temps when driving without the assistance of a fan. My car stays in the 180's with no fan driving around. The fan comes on when sitting in traffic or idle for extended periods at which point the temp fluctuates from 188-196. Once start driving the temp comes back down and fan does not run. Air flow air flow air flow !
OP there are many variables of the scirocco radiator. Why do you think you can't fit one? I have a dual back door intercooler on my car and found on that fits just fine. You can also have one custom made of that design so you have more cooling surface. Having that massive fmic you need more radiator surface and a triple core half size radiator isn't more air surface. Wider is better always when talking radiators not thicker unless you have no choise.

I too have a VW radiator and my friend just fit one in his EG. They are shorter and fit up under the top radiator support. By the looks of it in your pics, I think you would be able to fit one in there and shouldn't have too much interference with your uppipe. I can't fully tell, but do you have the bottom part of your radiator support still in your car? If not, that will work even better for you I think.

If it heats up while idling it's most likely your fan. I had the same issue when lining up. My temps would go to 220+. I replaced the fan and some other stuff and temps stayed below 195.
Btw I also raised the back of my hood to see if it would help at idle and there was very little improvement

I would probably try and get the koyo racing rad and fal/shroud and hopefully that will solve my problem. Thank you all, I really appreciate all the advice. I will update when I get these parts installed.
