Do you guys think it is dumb to wear saftey equipment when only going low 12's?
Ever since I have been drag racing my honda my dad has been pretty concerned with safety and me getting a cage, suit, shoes and so on.
Well today they had a flea market at Maple Grove and I found a used suit Jacket and Pants and some Simpson shoes and nice new helmet. I picked it all up at a very good price. I called a few of my friends and told them what I got, they kind of just laughed at me like why do you need that when you are only going 12's.
I am just wondering what you guys think about wearing all this. Is this over kill? So far I have been pretty dam lucky no one has hit me and nothing has happened to my car. Once though at atco an old Mazda lost control and came into my lane and pretty close to hitting me.
I plan on wearing it just for my own piece of mind and also my parents. I guess it is always better to be safe then sorry.
Sorry if this is a dumb post....kind of bored and wanted to see what you guys think.

you may never 'need' them, or be 'required' to, but safety is never overkill
A few people will laugh, but they are not the ones that have to live with a burnt face, broken neck or not live at all. If you want to feel good about wearing that all, go talk to Vinny Ten; he will make you feel like a fool for never have worn it up to this point.
You can never be too safe, even if its uncomfortable, hot or a PITA. Ill stop now, Im starting to sound like a preacher I think.

Agreed. I wear a helmet when i race but for my 1/4 times i am nowhere near where i need to be to be required to where one. My friends laughed at me for wearing a helmet, so what. But the way i see it, im going 90+mph at the end of 1/4, what IF something happens then. What if i loose control and hit the wall? What if the driver in the next lane loses control and slams into me? Anything can happen.

It's one of those things that people will talk/laugh whatever, but if they were confronted, would they really have a reason why it isn't neccesary? No, this is racing and safety should always be first priority.
Do what you think is best, and forget what the slower guys say.

you could never be to safe. when you least expect to have an incident is when it happens loong story short bout 9 years ago i had a very quick supercharged mustang was at the track tunning with job spetter from turbo people nothing crazy just takeing 1/8 mile passes and shutting down went back to the pits and did some suspension adjusting pull back up to the line (the last thing in my mind is having a incident )come off the trans brake car lifts comes down hard hits the oil pan oil gets under the back tires and next thing i know with in less then a second i hit the wall and the car was ingulfed in fire i couldnt move cause i broke my femma bone and the few short seconds taht it took for them to get to me and shut the battery kill switch while fire was pouring into the drivers compartment felt like hours all i could say is thank god i had on my saftey equipment cause i felt like a toasted marshmallow in their saftey equipment

ya seriously you never know what will happen, i took my friends car down the track one night thinking i was gonna take it easy and run maybe a low 14. i put my helmet on and what do you know, the track was slick with coolent from the 1/8th on. i spun out and hit the wall hard, the helmet saved my face from being cut to hell by the shards of the CD's my friend had in his visor holder. and to think i was only going to run a 14.

If you get to an NHRA POWERade event, go to the GM Performance trailer and ask for a copy of Tom Gideon's HANS Device VHS tape of what happens in "low speed" accidents and you might also think of adding a HANS device to your safety equipment... even if you run in the 12's.
It only takes one crash.

If you have it wear it. I know what you are talking about...I hear the same stuff in the stands at the local weekend drag races. After a wreck someone would say "oh he will be fine, that car only traps 95mph anyway".
I realize a car that traps 95 at a drag strip isn't fast, but on the other hand would you want to get into a wreck that fast? On the street people talk about getting into a wreck at 55 as being "my life flashed before my eyes" types of events.
Also, I assume you are going to want to keep pushing the car more and more (natural progression). Even though you run 12's now, who knows next year? Safety stuff is good to have around...

Not to hijack, but since this was brought up...does anyone have any comments about some of the HANS alternatives? Specifically the simpson product since it seems to be one of the cheapest ones I have seen (which is good IF it works).

Thanks guys for all your responces. I plan on wearing it at the next event. Prob next weekend at E-town. I do plan on going faster hopefully this winter I will get to build my motor/head and a new turbo setup. I want to get a cage done first before anything else.
I think I got some great deals on the stuff this weekend. I got the simpson shoes for 30 bucks only worn a few times.
The suit is a Pyrotect (i think that was the name) I got the full suit for 90 bucks.
