*4/9/12*
I know its been awhile since I've updated this but I've slowly been trying to get things together for the rebuild of Project 142.
2012 build: Project142 Ver. 2.0!

After last years catastrophic failure, I decided to take my time on this one.

After the damage had been done to the cylinder walls, I wasnt sure if I would be able to use this block for a turbo application again since 85mm is the max that people are having success with. Anything more than that and its only good for N/A applications. The block is back from the machine shop (Schmidt Automotive) and luckily they were able to clean up the walls with a bore and hone. Also had to get a few bolt holes Helicoil'd since some threads were pulled out.

The pistons I ordered are custom JE TPR spec 9.0:1 JE pistons with deeper cut valve reliefs. The skirts on these things are beefy!!
I also ordered them with the upgraded wrist pins. THANKS ROB!!

My girlfriend hooked me up with some Golden Eagle Headstuds for Christmas! She also got me a badass set of AN wrenches

Even though I've learned to use Red Loctite on my flywheel bolts, I still wanted to have this as a precautionary measure. (Barbie spoiled me again for my Bday-Rob hooked it up.)

I sent out a bunch of stuff to get ceramic coated and powder coated so when I get the block assembled, everything will be ready to bolt up. Everything will be ceramic coated satin black and the powercoat will be done in textured satin black. Ill update with pics when everything comes back from the Powdercoater's. Should look pretty clean! :D

Btw- I know what you are thinking, and YES that is a Honda Spec Top Mount Fatifold 8)
Fathouse Fabrications FTW!

As of right now, I'm waiting on my GE oil squirter plugs, GE head gasket, and ACL race bearings. I should have them in this week so as soon as i get them I will begin to assemble the bottom end.

The cylinder head is getting a full Ferrea valvetrain setup so that should be **** too!! Once the parts come in, I'll post pics.

*Today*

Well, its been awhile since I've been able to get anything going on this thing. I finally got some parts in and started assembling a few very minor things onto the block. Once I get my engine bearings in I can get started on assembling the short block. Hopefully I get them tonight or early Saturday morning.

My ring filer should be in today so that will give me something to do even if I dont get the bearings in before Sat.

A little golden eagle goodness here

Some murdered out parts 8)
Btw- This stuff turned out badass! The rest of the stuff had to get ceramic coated and should be done Saturday.

Heres a very little bit of progress I was able to make on the block. Not much, but all I can do at this point. (GE oil squirter plugs/Moroso oil pan studs

Thanks Josh. I should have my bearings in hand by Saturday morning so hopefully I can have the bottom end buttoned up by that evening.

Nice project. Sucks to see that it blew up, but glad you've got it on the right track again. Sounds like you've got an awesome girlfriend too

How bad did/do those M&H's rub? I thought a 26" tall tire was going to be too much for me so I decided to run a 235/60/14 M&H which checks in (obviously) a full inch shorter.

Haha. Thanks man. She helps me out alot on these builds. She hangs out in the garage with me and gives me a hand working on the car all the time.

The M&H's fit perfect. No rubbing what so ever. Mine are fitted on 15x7 +35 offset Rpf1's and you can see in some of the pics on the previous pages that they sit perfect.

I did trim the front bumper and beat in the inner fender pinchwelds when I had the 275/50/15 M/T et streets on it but I dont think M&H's would have rubbed even if I didnt do that.

Looking good so far! You are running E85 correct? I had also ran into "coolant" problems as well last year and I will hopefully be up and running by the end of May. Very similar setups except I have a PTE 6765 and made 647 @ 21PSI on the ID 1000's. Best of luck this year hope you don't run into problems like last year!

Yep I will be running Ethanol again this year. I also plan on switching over to a CEA6766 and see how that works.

Thanks! I am extremely happy with how it turned out. A few of my buddies that have seen it in person were dead set on getting all their stuff powercoated in the same textured satin black.

My goal was to get the bottom end completely assembled this past weekend. I got quite a bit done but ran into a slight snag at about 1:30 this morning.

-I filed the rings and got my gaps setup where I wanted them. (Top ring: 0.020)(Bottom ring: 0.024).
-Set the wristpins with the spirolocks
-Plastiguaged the main bearings (all measured out to just a touch under 0.0020)
-Torqued the crank into place
-Installed 3 of the 4 pistons (Rod bearings measured out to just under 0.0015 using plastiguage)

The engine seems to be quite a bit tighter than the last engine. I dont know if I like it though. The p2w clearance is 0.045 as opposed to the 0.055 that it was last year. The reason it was setup to a tighter p2w is because I will be running ethanol and the pistons wont see nearly the amount of heat that they would if I was going to be running gas.

The main bearings seemed to check out just fine but the rod bearing clearances have me a little worried. It just seems like it may be too tight because the plastiguage reading measured out to just under 0.0015. The last thing I want to do is hammer out a bearing.

*Heres the part that has me all f**ked up*

I got 3 of the pistons in to the block and torqued the rod caps down and when I went to install the last one, I started to tap the piston out of the compressor sleeve then I noticed that it wasnt going down anymore. No big deal, just figured I would take the piston back out and put it back in the ring compressor and then try it again. As I start to tap the piston back out of the top of the block, I hear a SNAP, and out falls a piece of the oil ring. FML.

That did it for me. I covered the engine up, cleaned up, and went to bed. Still pretty pissed about it this morning. Now I have to see what I can do about getting that ring replaced without having to buy another set.

Here are some of the pics:

Heres a side-by-side comparision of my old CPs and my new custom JE's.

There are a few things I dont like about the way this block is coming together so this weekend I will be taking it to Total Performance Racing. Rob offered to check a few things for me to make sure Im on the right track. We spoke yesterday and it seems that I need to get my hands on some (HX) Acl rod bearings to get the right clearance on the rods. Aside from this, I need to double check the actual finished bore to make sure everything checks out.

Thanks Rob!

Thanks! I called Ferrea and talked to John (Big ups to Ferrea for the customer support!), gave him the specs of my cams and the primary use of the car. Based on the information I gave him about the Pro1's that I am running and the fact that I plan on driving the car around a little bit on the weekends, he layed out this setup for me to run:

-Ferrea bronze valve guides- (VG1000/VG1002)
-Ferrea valve spring seat locators (SL1000)
-Ferrea valves- (Intake: F6048/Exhaust: F1449P)
-Ferrea valve seals- (VS1002/VS1003)
-Ferrea valve springs and retainers (S10104/E11000)
-Ferrea valve locks- (K10034)

The reason he recommended the S10104 springs is because of the material that the springs are made of. I guess its more of an endurance metal as opposed to some of the other springs they offer that are just designed to take a beating for a track pass and the drive back down the return lane.

Also he said I can shim the spring seats to get a higher seat pressure if needed.

I should be ordering everything and getting the head assembled within the next couple of weeks!
