location of manual transaxle fill/check plug, 1983 Civic?
I need to check the oil level in my 1983 Civic Wagon's manual 5-speed transaxle. I just got the car, and the transaxle seems a bit noisy and shifting gears seems a little "tight" especially when shifting into 5th gear. I've been all over the web looking for a detailed description, diagram, or photo of exactly where the check/fill plug is located. Can anyone check their manual and tell me? I've got a manual on the way, but it won't be here for a couple of weeks. The info I did find was to use 10w40 motor oil and to fill up to the level of the plug (from Autozone's online manuals).
Thanks
Jeff

I have an 83 Civic S and this is what its like on mine, should be similar to yours...if you crawl underneath the car you will find on the side of the transmission that is facing the passenger side, a square plug that you can stick your ratchet in. I dont know what the type of plug its called but dont put anything on your ratchet, then just unscrew it. Its located towards the bottom of your trans, hence it being a drain plug. Your oil will then come out from that hole, it will drain slow if your breather hole (mine has one anyways) is plugged but should trickle out. Before you do this though (sorry for being out of order) there is a 17mm (I think) bolt that is up and left of the drain plug, you will need a good extension or carny hands to reach it from the bottom, my advice is spot it from underneath then go topside and free the bolt. I fill my trans through my breather hole that is on top of the tranny with the fill hole open and when oil comes out I put the plug in. Hope this helps!
