best for what? piercing highs? solid midrange? deep bass? you can't really say there is a best because everyone likes their sound to be a certain way

not to psuedo hijack your post... but I'm wondering the same thing. I've been out of car audio for so long. Back in the day, I loved the sound of ClifDesigns stuff. I've been looking now in to a pair of CDT audio. I like good imaging, a nice amount of kickdrum (the stuff the sub won't pick up) and solid highs.
I've yet to find any of the major brands that can even touch my worn out Clifs.. (sony, pioneer, mtx, the stuff you can buy at best buy and circuit city).
There have to be more unkown brands that sound amazing. I'm looking for something under $400/pr.

In this order IMO Focal, MB quart, Diamond, Boston Acoustics are some of the best (others out there but none that I've had any experience with). The main problem with unknown brands is that nobody knows about them . Most of the time brands are known for a reason ..... either they do a hell of a lot of marketing or they put out a really good product....

I like Infinity Kappa Perfects. They're not too pricey and they sound really good if you put the right wattage into them.

I have been using MB Quarts since '87 and before that I used Bostin Acoustic or Polk Audio.
Your best bet is to go to a stereo shop that has a sound booth and listen to different tracks from YOUR favorite CD's. Make sure they turn off the subs so you can hear the mib basses and tweeters by themselves. After you find a set that you like have the shop turn a sub that you like. HTH

Focal Utopias are pretty tough to beat, but unless you have $1695 to spend, try some JL VR's. they run about $249. IMO they sound better than the XR's, which cost more.

I personally am partial to the sound of Dynaudio's...
I don't like a bright speaker.
This instantly rules out MB Quart, and sure as hell rules out Focal.
I'd rather stick a Q-Tip too far into my ear than listen to those two.

You could always just modify it a little to make it fit
As for good stuff between $300 and $400, check out the CDT audio stuff. There crossovers are full 60db (I have yet to learn what this means, but the imaging is supposed to be awesome). A properly installed set will always go along ways towards improving overall quality and db levels. From what I understand though, the CDT stuff is some of the best. Do a search on google and see what you come up with. www.sounddomain.com has a lot of stuff you can look at. They used to have more CDT stuff, I don't know where it all went. Anywho, haven't heard anything bad about CDT's.

Re: whats the best component speakers out on the market (moridin2004)
the 60db/octave crossovers are not *true* the crossover slope refers to how sharp the cutoff is at a particular frequency, the higher the number, the better the definition.
usually 24db/octave crossovers are found in good setups.
CDT Audio eurosports, rainbow pros, alpine 3 ways (f17t) and definetly Focal (although i hate their tweeter for its harshness) are the best component sets. however, its all in the ears.
DEI also makes some GREAT sounding speakers with good midbass.

Re: whats the best component speakers out on the market (o_Rage_o)
I was looking at the specs of the CDTs and they were posted as 60db per octave. I'll check again though.

You would need a very efficient 12 to run it with only 100 watts. I would suggest one very efficient sub. I think the IDMAX has a sensitivity of mid 90's.

I love my diamonds! I don't think think you can beat a set of hex's. Althought if you have around $7000, rainbow make a really nice component set.

If you are low on power, go ported, it's the best thing you can do...look at the IDV3 line from image dynamics!

Re: whats the best component speakers out on the market (phoenixR)
I have had a few pairs of Dynaudio speakers. IMHO they are the best. Find a good set used and put as much power as you can on them. They will love you for it. Next in line are the Rainbows. I really like them too.
