Subwoofer on stock system
Well I've had my car for 1.5 years now and I'm still on the stock system. I know I hate it, and I miss my old sub soooo much (had to sell it to get money to tune up this car). Well anyway I'm finally getting a sub and amp for cheap (hookups from friends), and I want to hook it up to my stock stereo for now until I can get a HU and speakers, etc. What is the best way to hook it up, just splice into the speaker wires on one side in the back of the car and run it to the amp's speaker level inputs? Any info would help.

get a line levle converter. then get a harness and a reverse harness and wire in the line converter, and plug in your amps rca cable to the converter and BAM! your ready to go...good luck
p.s. it's not as hard as it sounds....

He's right, the best way to do it is to buy a line-level converter. Most of those units have the ability to adjust the sensitivity. Something that you definately need control over because of the way ampilifers work. I have yet to see an amplifer that has the ability to adjust the level of the high-level inputs.
Converters are relativley cheap, 20-40 depending on the quality. I noticed you live in memphis. If you like, we could hook up and I could show you how to do the install right. Its really easy to get all your wiring ratted out when splicing into your speakers.

I've had that set up for a while. I just upgraded to an Alpine HU a couple of weeks ago. But to answer your question. I got "pac adapters" at Circuit City.

if you want to use your cars speaker level outputs to your amp (which you stated has speaker level/line level inputs) then you can just splice into the rear speakers output wires and input to the amp... then wire powe fused power, ground, and speaker wires to your subs and you'll be ready to go..
if you want to buy the line level/inline converters then you can pick them up for about $20 at most car audio places and even Radio Shack, Best Buy, CC, etc...
If your going that route... I would run the line level converter to under the dash/by the radio.. and run the RCA wiring to the LL Converter from the head unit/dash area to the rear trunk where your amp is... this way when you get a real head unit which has RCA pre-outs.. you have already done the RCA wiring and your amp is already hooked up.. and so when u get a new head unit.. all you do is wire the head unit... take out the old unit and line level converter.. and plug in the existing/already run RCA cables.. and you'd be good to go...

I have a full stereo system head unit, speakers, subs, bi-amping, DSP unit, etc..
if you were talking to patrick... he's getting an amp and subs... if he turns the bass levels down on his head unit so that the stock speakers don't get a lot of bass he can bump it... the sub and amp can take care of the bass and the stock speakers will "work" for the mids and tweets.. its not going to sound great because frankly the stock speakers and HU aren't that great.. but it'll work and he can bump it..
now if he put the bass all the way up on the HU w/ stock speaker.. its going to be all distorted.... he has the amp and subs to take care of bass...

Re: Subwoofer on stock system (95VTECGSR)
I know the stock speakers aren't good, but it's a $$$ issue here. I already had to replace both front 6.5" door speakers because the original ones were completely blown, the surround was gone all the way around on both speakers. Because I can't afford anything real nice, I just got some cheap Pioneer dual cone speakers, which say they can handle 100W max, which is way more than the stock HU puts out. The basket design is exactly the same as the stock speakers were (stock was Pioneer also), so it was a direct drop-in, along with some harness adapters from Circuit City. I'll probably do the same for the rear (only $25/pair) because the cones on those look a little distorted also.
