Default Car audio wiring question

I'm just wondering why would you need a 4 or 8 gauge going from the battery to the amplifier and then only use a 14 or 16 gauge speaker wire going from the amp to the sub woofer? I mean theoretically, shouldn't you use the same 4 or 8 gauge going from the amp to the sub woofer?
