best place to buy an alarm???
i'm looking for a viper 5000 or any dei equivilant, python 900, etc. my town is pretty limited in variety. best buy won't sell to me unless they install it. i'm not paying someone to half *** an install when i'm more than capable to do it myself. there are two smaller non chain stores in my town. one will sell me an alarm without install for $250, but he also tells me that dei doesn't sell a glass break sensor, they only sell shock sensors. and if i want a tilt sensor it will be an extra $100. for obvious reasons i want to stay away from this place. the other store i can't get an answer from because the owner is out of town and the employees don't know if they can sell the alarm without an install. i have searched around and found different sites and prices, but being a newb to this alarm stuff i'm not sure who is reputable to buy from online, so any advice will be greatly appreciated. also, i'm not a fan of ebay....

Well, your options are extremely limited if you want an alarm with a warranty. If you do, you must purchase it from and have it installed by an authorized reseller...
However, if you don't care, and really want to install it yourself, you could always buy it and schedule the install, and just call and cancel your appointment. What are they going to do? Tell you that you have to return the alarm?? I doubt it...

Re: (B18C_EJ8)
i'm not worried about doing the install myself or not having the warranty. the shop where the boss is gone is the only place that would a custom install and the installer said it would be a minimun of $600. $450 for a normal install, and $75 for each extra sensor....
none of the places will let me take the alarm out of the store, you pay for the alarm and install at the same time, they have set prices so if i could skip out on the install i would be paying over $400 for just the alarm...

It's company policy at Best Buy to allow you to buy the alarm w/out the install. You were just dealing with some idiots. Try and get a manager next time.

after talking/arguing with the dumbass clerk person i did ask for and talk to a manager and got the same response. i'll go back and see if i can get a different one. i was in utter disbelief when they refused to sell me an alarm, i thought he was just messing with me at first...
you've probably heard this already but thanks for your write-ups, i certainly found them informative...

I know it is a little diff. in the USofA but up here we will sell any brand we carry over the counter, and you get one year manufacturers warranty, [more on some product] to get the lifetime warranty you need to have it installed at an authorized dealer, doesn't even have to be us.
I know of nothing up here that you can't buy over the counter and install yourself or have someone of your own choosing install it, I don't think you are even allowed to insist that a product must be installed to be able to buy it, I know a place that tried to do something like that, install was free, but unit price was $100-$200 more then any place else, didn't last long.
You still see a lot of alarm installed for $***, but it must be written up as product and the install, and if someone wants it over the counter, the install portion must be deducted.
I would contact DEI directly and find out what their policy is on over the counter sales in the US is? 94

thanks for the response. i went back to best buy and after complaining to a different clerk the best they would do was sell me the alarm at the install price, but without install. since they only 2 way alarms they have are also remote starts (791xv or whatever) and the price is double i'll not be going back there. i don't care what their policy is anywhere else because it obviously isn't that way here, i'm done with best buy, i never liked that place anyway. any more opinions on where to buy an alarm?

at my job (circuit city) i don't think they sell without install... but they will let u take it home and come back for an appointment. in that case... install it and come back for a refund on the installation and say u had it installed somewhere else cause circuitcity/bestbuy couldn't get to it the same day.

Okay listen, Best Buy AND Circuit City are both allowed to sell you an alarm over the counter w/out installation, the US and in other countries. I have worked at both companies within the past 2 years. Yes, we will discourage the hell out of you trying to install it yourself, but that's because we get a lot of idiots that try to install it, then bring it back and get upset when we don't want to install an opened/fucked up alarm. You're not one of those idiots so it sucks but you will get lumped in with them. It probably isn't worth your time, but you could get ahold of corporate and they would take care of you.
And yes, Best Buy sucks. Most stores anyway. Your location clearly sucks. My location is the bomb, but that's because it's only me and one other installer and our manager. My opinion of this company hasn't changed since I started working here. The vast majority of their installers are crappy installers. The reason for this is a surprise. Best Buy promotes internally! Once you've been installing for a couple years, you get bumped up to a higher position and some rookie takes your place. So basically there are mostly rookie installers. Compare this to Circuit City which just fired all of their senior installers company wide. They offered them their jobs back at lower pay. I saw this coming and that's why I got out.
You can TRY to contact DEI. Good luck.

sorry, I just got back in from florida, work is hectic. But yea, I returned your pm. Just to let you know the viper 5000 is now a disco item. It has been replaced with the viper 5002. Which is basicly a rsx3.5 by clifford.

Re: (wrx-killer-Sti eater)
wrx is the only person I would buy from on this forum. Unfortunately.... he never got back with me! (waiting to get new models in stock) And I ran out of time so I ended up getting a 350HV with my employee discount. I'm poor anyway. Not really, but all my money goes to my debt. But I'll be hitting him up later for a remote start to replace the alarm on my Civic so I can do a new site.
I wonder if I get the warranty when I install an alarm for myself on the side. Seeing as how when I do it on the clock it's under warranty.
Yeah DEI sucks on the phone. You are nothing to them. Hell, I call as a BB employee and I aint **** to them. DEI is a big monster that devours whole companies. And I don't blame you for giving up on those idiots at BB. I would have too.

Re: best place to buy an alarm??? (00preludesh)
AMS in madison would probably let me walk out with an alarm if you want to do the install. After all I've given them to much business and I know one of the salesmen really well. Let me know what alarm you want, I think you were looking at viper and I can call down there and see what he says. I'm most likely going down there this weekend and could grab it and bring it back for you.

Circuit City carries Python, not Viper.
Well they're the same thing anyway.
Both companies have policies allowing you to buy the alarm in the store w/out installation, though many people find it difficult to do so at particular locations.

Re: best place to buy an alarm??? (dkrangers)
I just called my guy, he said viper makes dealers sign an agreement stating that they will not sell the alarm that they must install it. He gave me some prices of some of the viper products and he will let me walk with the alarm and no install because I do so much business there and give them so much business.
I sent you a PM with prices.
