Default The 3 Summer Install - Some pictures of a job almost complete - 56K be patient.

NEW PICS ADDED - JUNE 17th...

Sooo H-T

I've learnt so much from you and before w.hen I had enough time, tried to respond to and give advice on as much as I knew about. During those times, i've never once posted a picture or talked about my install - becuase I was hoping to show everyone once i was finally done.

For the past three years, I've been taking a dual specialization degree in both systems and computer engineering, and in order to complete a minor in business admin without taking an extra year, I was also a full time student (and for one summer employee...wow...bad idea) during the entire duration.

The car was at my parents house - and is driven in summers only - During the winter I never seemed to find time to finish the install because it was damn cold in canada, plus my garage barely fits the teg - most work had to be done with doors removed. The install took just about three summers, with much of the electrical work being done in the last month of this summer (doh.) - The car was not driven at all last summer due to school, and ...being...generally empty.

Its the week of June 07, 2004 - And currently, I'm trying to complete the amp rack and enlarge my door openings to fit my new midbass drivers in the car. Another week, and I should have finished pics.

Here is my story thus far

All work - 100% DIY - Anyone can do it, I swear. I am also *not* a professional installer.

Enjoy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ahhhh The integra - driveable, content, and incedently, the last time i'll hear music from it for the next little while

The teg has been stripped and cleaned in preperation for a major reduction in its noise floor - Dynamat, Brown Bread, Sound Proofing Insulation and Carpet Padding are all going to work in tandem to try and make this environment more audio friendly

Another shot of the empty interior

You can see most of the brown bread, sometimes two layers, installed on all surfaces painfully, with a heat-gun and roller. The rear airspaces have been filled with household sound proofing insulation used in home theatres.

The incoming 0 Gauge, Rockford fosgate power wire, properly going through an enlarged hole on the firewall - using a 1 inch OD rummer grommet, and also through black wire loom. This wire is fused before, closer to the battery terminal.

MOLEX - WOW What a PITA to maintain a stock look. Here's the drivers connecter being drilled so that a pair of 14 gauge and some signalling wires for the alarm can be passed through

For anyone who has done this - YOU KNOW WHY I need to show two pictures. My door's (not panels...the DOORS) were off while I did this to make it much easier.

So now, my wire is all in the car, passed through firewalls, grommets and doors.

A couple bags..of cable ties later - nicely run on either side of the center. The final setup will consist of fully active three way up front, 8" mids in the door, a 5 1/4" midrange and 1" tweeter in the kickpanel

Ooh pretty...wiring all to the trunk...yea...not hard when there's nothing in the car!

So here I am - happy, and not realizing that black cable ties - as nice as they look to me in my mind's eye...will not show at all but Hey, this whole install was done ensuring everything seen and unseen remains as close to perfect as possible (with my limited knowledge of course)

Carpet padding installed - This stuff is about 3/4 - 1" thick and will help lower road noise by actually blocking it out - whereas the dynamat and brown bread will move the ressonance frequency of the panels up - together - quiet car.

The stock carpet came back on top just fine..little squeezing necessary, but just about all of it meets up - you can also see a picture of the Q-Logic kicks, which have been deadened but not sealed - yet.

Just about all the p*ssy I'm going to get in this car for a while....

My dash, throwing up custom alarm wiring - I was crazy enough to do just about every addition known to man - and then some!

The wiring cleaned up though (cable ties, cutters, loom - your friends)

Installed some HID's - used relays to ensure no excessive power draw, and to give the ballast it's own fused power feed. This is a phillips 4100K kit..and I love it.

Sharp cutoff - yay.

Sad but true - not washed since 2001. Most of this install you've seen has been done during May of 2002 - and then i was back in school + work for the remainder of the summer.

Some springs installed last week for a suspension upgrade.

22mm Type-R sway bar to complete and compliment the Comptech Sport Springs used to lower the center of gravity and provide an almost stock feel that dramatically changes in the twisties - I'm a fan of these progressives - also the drivers side is slightly stiffer then passanger just to help neutral the driver bias

The amp rack being made and stereo equipment purchased like 2 years ago finally seeing the light of day.

Another shot of the amp rack - The only thing harder than parting money for 0 Gauge, is bending it, crimping it, cutting it, finding proper termination for it....the list goes on...the wire - is toatally unnecessary, as 2 Gauge was what I calculated my needs for.

Kicker 8" Midbasses - picture courtesty of MorningZ's install of the same speakers into an integra. This work is being done today...as you read this - June 7th 2004

Cutting the factory door panels in order to fit these babies in - very shallow mount!

I hope to acheive the same final result in the next few day's as MorningZ did with his midbass install.

--------------

Well that's it for now. I am mounting the amp rack this week, and finishing the midbass driver install hopefully by tomorro. I'll post 2 - 3 new pictures of the final install...but that's my story!

Thanks for reading

-Shane

JUNE 7-8th

: I got my 8" Kicker midbasses in, used a grinder to get everything in place - had some kids watching the sparks fly lots of fun!!

Here's my dad while I took the pic.

JUNE 8th-17th

Sooo it took a while to post - I did my front and rear brakes and rotors and found that my 10,000KM old timing belt had a nick on it because of my moon cut valve cover and some bad luck - I just got it changed yesterday and now i'm back to my stereo

Today I finished the door panel install, and also made sure the door was free of rattles, I also installed two LED's in each door panel and synchronized them with a single timing circuit (connected the LED's in parallel - but don't do this on an alarm output!)

Heres some new pics

Here's the crossover I made from a simple inductor and two capacitors. They have been calculated to give me an approximate 195hz lowpass cutoff at 12db/octave. The problem with this is that it utilizes passives which will "eat away" at some of the power in my signal stream - my other option was to run full highpass from 60+ and have the speakers rollover at their natural rate (around 400 my particular driver RMB8's begin to fall-off)

Overall i'm happy with the result - but will still play!

OH YEA - this crossover is supposed to look like a person :D lol i was having fun, its obviously much cleaner before it was installed inline.

So here's sean - disgusted by the time i take with a knife to cut 0 gauge wire so that it's the perfect length and looks professional. After ryan decides to try a dremel (yeesh people...) he decides HEY ! Wheres that grinder you used for the doors....I let him have his "chance"

Sooooo the grinder was not a good idea...my wire looks like the T1000 from terminator 2....back to the knife

Heres is my door as of today - June 17th 2004 - with the new driver sitting in its home, and the door deadened like hell - it feels great and very luxurious when you close it - no rattle!! Also, heres a good time to use cement glue to affix the rubber window peice on the window track - it comes off for some people, and I don't want it to happen to me!

Raising the resonance frequency by adding weight will not remove the road noise -I decided to slightly deaden, and insulate my door panel - here's one in the works.

And here is the panel when i'm just about finished with it.

Thanks for looking again - I should be finished soon!

Hey nice job!

Was in the same situation a few years ago LOL (referring to the GF).

Those molex connectors suck, what sucks even more is trying to get all the little plastic shavings out of that grease!

Pray you never get a dent in the side of your car. I used acoustic foam on my integra side panels all the way back. When you use the household foam it makes it extremly hard to repair if you were to get a dent. (edit: looks like you used insulation good job!)

Make sure if your car ever goes in for body work to tell tem you have this in your car. This stuff will catch fire sometimes. Also it is more work for them so they won't be happy if they weren't able to get the extra money from the insurance and they had to do the extra work.

You will be happy with the your efforts, no more tin can sound! Even with the radio off the car is much more enjoyable.

I wish I had pics of my install All I have of my efforts is a few outside pics of the car. A friend bought all my equipment so that makes me feel a little better.

Is that your GF hairdryer?

holy s@#$ nice job! Looks very clean and professional. Looks like you know exactly what you are doing and know how to get it done right.

If only I had the patience and time to do the sound deadening like you!

Good luck I hope she turns out exactly like you wanted

Good install

One thing.....it's spelled soldering, not <strikethru>saudering</strikethru>

How did you get the molex connectors in the door to pop off? I'm having a bit of trouble with that myself. Thanks.

Once you open the doors up, use a small precision screwdriver if necessary and push back the molex (towards the car frame) there is a clip on the bottom on the door side, when pushed - the plug will release towards the frame.

Good luck!

Okay, makes sense. I'll hopefully be running the 14ga cable to the crossovers and then to the S600s'es. Wish me luck..but it's not going to be as sweet as this "3 year job"

Well done...Kinda what I'm going through with the CRX. ( I feel your
pain ) Remember this...These projects are never ever
really FINISHED . Great job though...now the newbies may
understand what goes into this.

How close are those Q-forms kicks to your clutch? I've had a couple guys tell me they suck in some stickshift cars. I think they both drove Stangs, don't remember though.

I can appreciate what you are doing here and know you are going to be more than satisfied when finished.

<----- hates the Molex plugs...and that is no joke about getting the shavings out of the grease.

So far, its pretty damn close - Right now i'm having trouble mounting them because it seems that they don't stretch quite enough to get into the plastic "screw" near the clutch pedal where the factory kickpanel went without putting too much tension on the opposite side (under the plastic side rails)

Soooo the kicks are on the floor right now - however, when i get them mounted, it does look like it will be quite close - I've lost my deadpedal and will either end up resting my foot on them (not on purpose) or having to pull them out.

The stage - from my test runs - is very nice - it surprisingly does not seem low at all - just about a little higher then door and centered throughout. It will take a little time alignment and maybe playing around with phasing to get right.

-Shane

P.S - Molex...STILL sucks, and it was done like forever ago.

Update: Got the system in the trunk and wired - and now i noticed a small hole in my timing belt - doh - no driving until monday....

Looks like you gained some weight there.

But awesome detailed write up. With all the sound deadening material, it'll be like sitting in a recording studio.
