Re: V8 Integra Build Thread- FOR REAL THIS TIME!!
This is what "building" cars is all about! It's not following every trend you see on the internet or trying to fit that 16x10 under your Honda Civic fenders because you want to be the first. It's about doing something no one in their right mind would ever think of doing.
You sir might be on something you can only get from a doctor, but my hat is off to you! Great work and can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Re: V8 Integra Build Thread- FOR REAL THIS TIME!!
Nice Build if you were to sell it i would definitely buy it.
Considering you just made a beast out of a car that was produced in the us to basically go to the grocery store.
Couple questions.
1. Is there a weight advantage to the integra body?
2. What was your quarter time?
3. How much to do mine?

yes, most foreign cars are made of lighter metals, compared to domestic, also the integra has a lot less **** going on than a mustang
2. What was your quarter time?
op
3. How much to do mine?
correct me if im wrong kimo, but early he said that he didn't really spend too much money because he was able to sell the mustang body, teg engine and various other stuff

and not only lighter metals, but todays cars (and cars of a few decades ago) are seeking gas mileage, the US has always been far behind when it comes to being gas efficient. that being said, most foreign cars strive on light weight cars, powered by low hp motors

mr. wikipedia? give me a break, that website is ridiculous. there's no need to instigate an argument, however you did make a good point about all the custom braces, i didn't think about that.. as for a source, how about the $185 autobody repair book i have sitting infront of me?

you're generalizing way too much. you're autobody repair book doesn't accurately delineate the weight of vehicles from the frame to the chassis from import to domestic from year to year... simply put, you're tossing out information that you have no idea about.
The gas mileage thing, completely irreverent and not completely accurate either.
the cobra weighs 3,430, while the integra weighs 2,643.
so difference of 790 lbs right?
Assume the stock GSR motor and trans weigh 400lbs and the cobra engine, trans, driveshaft, differential weight double that: 800lbs.
In other words, the body of the mustang was probably the lightest parts on the car. The body of the integra is probably a negligible difference.
Prior to structure and bracing, it's probably a wash. Scales could prove me wrong. Lets see a number.

Re: V8 Integra Build Thread- FOR REAL THIS TIME!!
Not only does the drivetrain add weight over the original car (even though that should be an aluminum engine block and heads), but there's likely a significant difference in the weight of the suspension components. Being a larger car, the Mustang will have beefier balljoints, control arms, etc. Remember the bottom half is Mustang.
I doubt there's much difference in the thickness of the body panels. Any diffence in weight between the two bodies will be due to the fact that the Mustang is physically wider, taller (as shown by the fact that the intake manifold won't fit under the hood), and likely longer than the Integra. The amount of glass is probably a wash, as the Mustang actually had a relatively small windshield. Although the Integra has a sunroof, whereas I don't believe that was a factory option on the Mustang.
Add in the additional bracing and I agree, likely a wash. I'd also be curious to see some numbers, and how it might compare to a race-prepped Cobra (i.e. stripped interior, a/c eliminated, etc).
The comment about the "grocery getter" is interesting too, as that was essentially how the Mustang started. Everything up to the current generation (2005+) was based on the Fairmont platform; a lightweight (at least for its time) "economy" car. Of course it still wouldn't touch the fuel efficiency of an Integra, but that has more to do with engine design and physical size than it does with material selection.

Re: V8 Integra Build Thread- FOR REAL THIS TIME!!
It's actually quite interesting in that while there may be some difference in the thickness of the exterior body panels, the thickest material on the Mustang unibody is most likely in the underlying structure (floor, shock towers, firewall, etc.), which was retained. So some material was removed in places, while some was added in other places. It'd be interesting to see where things ended up in that respect.

Re: V8 Integra Build Thread- FOR REAL THIS TIME!!
First off the windshield never broke throughout the entire build. I hit it by mistake with a hammer during the fitting of the dash board. The body is now stronger than it ever was.
I weighed the car on Sunday with a quarter of a tank of gas it is 2905lbs. This. Was doneat our local race track. I did not run the car since I was showing the car.
So yes I am 500lbs lighter than a stock mustang cobra.
So haters keep being mad . And everybody that cares here is the first video

Oh and as for the arguing over the sheet metal thickness yes the mustang metal was significantly thicker. Where I had to weld the two cars together the integra was much more likely to have burn through.

Re: V8 Integra Build Thread- FOR REAL THIS TIME!!
I'm not mad at all.
In the structual sections (such as the floor pan) it does make sense that the Mustang was thicker. My comments were regarding the assumption that ALL the sheet metal (including the parts you discarded from the Mustang) would be significantly thicker throughout. As I stated earlier, my thought was that any weight savings would be primarily due to the physical size of the Mustang moreso than a difference in the gauge of the body panels.
Anyway, 2905 is an impressive number, and lighter than the published curb weight of the '95 Cobra R (although they had a heavier engine). The hood and fenders must help out quite a bit!
I really would like to see how the two were joined together, just out of genuine curiousity. It's entirely your prerogative to withold that info, but I guess I just don't quite get why it has to be a big secret. Just my 2 cents, no hate intended!

that's very impressive. I'm curious where all that weight went, 500#s is a lot for just "thicker body panels"
also weight distribution would be interesting to see.
Kimo: Can you guestimate the weight of the cobra body/glass?
