STOCK D16y8 WANTING TO GO ALL MOTOR
I have a pretty mint y8 and I want to do some motor work to increase power, and run healthier.
I know a lot about cars from the outside, being a detailed and audio installer, but not much about aftermarket engine parts.
Wondering if someone could list some parts I can look into. Thanks. -weedy

like everyone else has said, its not worth it. the price you would spend to make "power" in a d, you could easily afford a b swap and that b will probably make more power anyway. another vote for a turbo if you wanna stay d series.

Get a cheap ebay turbo kit for $500. Sell the turbo, waste gate, and BOV. Get quality replacements for them. Get a chipped P28. Get some injectors. Get a GOOD tune. You should be able to get a decent kit going for ~$1000 that will get you close to 200whp or so, and still be fairly reliable. Just remember, the tune is the most important part of making a reliable turbo setup.

^^
I wouldnt recommend this advice. My 02
Half the time you need to spend more money to get pieces to fit correctly and have tubing welded.
your still going to have to buy decent parts and turbo, it would make more sense to just buy a whole kit that will bolt right up.
Reputable kits are 2K,and add injectors and ECU mod, and tune.
You dont need a P28, Any OBD1 Vtec ecu will work. Even a non-vtec ecu can be converted to vtec for a few bucks. Your using your own tune on a chip/ board so a P28 isnt needed.
How this P28 mis-information spread thru the Honda community is amazing.
Mounts, Clutch, suspension should also be looked at for more torque and speed.
Going fast isnt cheap

Reliable

Pick 2 and the 3rd is what its not.

Ive seen people talk on the forums about building d-series engines, and going the forced induction route; but in my opinion, it would make more sense to fully build a b-series engine. If you have the money, build a b18c1 or a b18c5. If money is an issue, build an ls b18b, or a b16. Itll be much harder to squeeze a decent amount of power out of the d16, rather than the motors listed.

It's not hard or expensive to get B-series power our of a D16.

Building a d-series can be dirt cheap and a lot of fun. I've built a pile of d-series and messed with lots of cam/head combos. Messing with d-series is a great place to learn more about building engines and associated techniques.
besides, it's not all about power.

Not everyone needs a B. The D is also a great place to learn considering the parts are cheap as all get out if you screw one up.

I'll see if I can find the D16 build speedfactory did numerous years ago. Kevin and James threw together a pump gas D16 that made something like 172whp and 2 ft/lb of torque
But seriously it was a neat build. Only thing is I know they were into it like 4-5k. Yea it would pull a B16, but 1.8's were a different story. Like they say "no replacement for displacement". They threw a 100 shot on it after that for good measure.

Re: STOCK D16y8 WANTING TO GO ALL MOTOR
I bought an ej6 coupe from my brother all he did was swap a y8 intake manifold and exhaust manifold on the stock y7 engine and it pulled on my friends ej6 with ls/gsr tranny and an em1 both with i/h/e. So $60 worth of manifolds beat what would have been ~$2,000 for a b16a2 swap or ~$1,500 for the LS/GSR swap. I got about 35 mpg compared to their 25ish mpg and parts were a lot cheaper if I happened to break something. I then could have put a generous $2,000 into a turbo setup and put 200+ horsepower down. But, to be fair, the LS/GSR FELT a lot faster and the short gear ratio's from the B-series engines were more fun.
