Default The Shodan & Project "SHE"?

Yes, I said it..... Project "SHE".

One of my best friends has given me the distinct honor and privilege to trust me to create his first project for his 1995 Civic LX Ferio in which has has been the original owner and driver (Some of you young people don't know nothin' about holding onto something that long hahaha.)

Back in 2002 he came to Autowerks Motorsports of Warren, MI, to get his OBD1 original B16 installed (in which I was a partner of then). He had a trans issue 3 years later so he went with an LS transmission that was available. It will now be replaced with a B16

His B16 Engine (God, don't we wish all of our engines look this clean)

1595cc Displacement
81mm Bore
77.4 Stroke
10.2:1 Compression
158 Crank HP
VTEC
Years Produced -1988-2000 (But we all know this, right?)

The car was simple, yet effective. This is what it will look like when complete with paint by later this year. (Thank you... Original owner.. Please let me know if you want me to take these pics down.. these were just to be used as an example of the finished product).

Now remember, ladies and gents this car has been daily driven since 2000. Work, Play, didn't matter, he drove it there. So, after 160,000K on the motor, It was time to get movin forward, and he wanted to stay in the B-series camp. The car's name is "She". I know, but that's what he named her.

So, let's get to it, shall we?

Skunk 2 has been in the game since 1994 from the original Area 51 - Skunkworks projects. I was mentioning to him about the ALLMOTOR Custom cams, (as I like new ideas and new innovation), but he didn't bite, so ALL MOTOR, next time, I'm picking your stuff up ;-)

Hopefully it will look like the one I made

Pics of the already purchased

Fuel

This time, we're going to go with a different approach. Instead of Delphi 440cc or DSM 450cc injectors, we're going to try the 410cc DENSO injectors from the Turbocharged Acura RDX!! DONE.. Thanks Mtber/Xenocron

They use Scion TC injector clips that wire in, so we're picking those up soon to mate with the clips. We decided to stay with the stock fuel rail.

Also decided to use A walboro 255 fuel pump kit. "SHE" originally has the Civic LX pump, and its just going to be overstressed with these new injectors. it's just good insurance to keep from failure. No sense in destroying a brand new engine. DONE Thanks, Mtber/Xenocron

So. Comments and questions are much appreciated. I'm pretty scared, so I'm going to make sure I don't screw it up. Please please please wish me luck that I don't screw this up.

That fuel pump install kit isn't for an eg. You need Walbro GSS342 pump with 400-846 install kit!

Engine management?

Cool. Thanks for the heads up. the pics for the fuel pump were used strictly for illustration. But now I know what part number specifically to get. I'll probably go ahead and pick one up from you, since you have the information and are a business that believes in responsible and ethical sales to the public for over 10 years.

Once again, Apex'i Power FC will be used, as in the last two setups. Our tuner is Yoshio Kinoshita, a Power Excel Dealer at Japanese Automotive. I know its sacrilege in the H-T world to use Power FC, but as you can see, I've always been able to make it work successfully with full support. Plus, the owner has full gauge capability without having to install a tunerview (to a degree)

if the owner was rocking a 175kmile b16 going to this set up, i think its safe to say he will be happy with "she"

thumbs up for a well planned shopping list of parts

Wow this is cool. I wish I could have been an original owner, but beings I was born in 88 it makes it pretty much impossible. The Chevelle in my sig has been in our family since 72, its a 70, and the attachment to it is unbelievable. Second owner and only 44k on the clock. I can only imagine what this is like for this guy. Im jealous your getting this privelage

I have a few questions about some of your build componets.

*Autowerks Motorsport custom baffled OEM oil pan
Do you have anymore information on this? Picture, cost, how to get in contact with Autowerks about this part?
I have been looking for a resonable OEM oil pan, that I don't have to do myself.

"Scion TC injector clips that wire in" does means cut and splice or plug and play? I know a few companies make PnP jumpers just curious if this is a easier cheaper alternative.

I noticed in one of the pictures there are Toda cam gears but the parts list shows Skunk2 cam gears. What is going to happent the Toda cam gears? I'm interested.

The injector connectors are a DENSO only part.
P/N - 90980*11875. The K-series forum and others have a nice write up about them, so I'll probably wire those in myself.

The picture with the Toda Gears are from another car and were just displayed as an example. Those wil never be sold. hahaha

Autowerks Motorsport doesn't exist to the public. They work in conjunction with Venture Enterprises, a design division of General Motors. They're doing me a favor making this for him because they have used several pans that are designed JUST like a B-series engine. They just finished another CR-Z hybrid turbo project

*Update*. Well, the pistons are with the machine shop and are being pressed into Recon'd OEM rods with ARP rod bolts. The block has been washed and is now being bored and honed to 81.5mm. The budget went a little higher than expected but so is everything else.

The entire assembly including the clutch / flywheel.

Thanks, though this will be HIS baby. I think it will be fun.

We just ordered the Mishimoto Radiator (2 row size radiator) and Black Samco Hoses. Not much more to update until it comes in early next week.

Update!!! 5.9.11

Well, All the goodies came back from the machine shop. Now we need to get the car prepped for assembly. After that, we work on the head mill (only .004"), valve stem seal replacement, and reassembly.

ONTO THE MACHINE WORK. The entire rotating assembly, including clutch, flywheel and Crank pulley were balanced.

Engine block

81.5mm bore, new cross hatch and block deck of .004"
(I do note that the o-ring and dowel on the block need to be replaced and checked so we don't lose oil pressure.)

Crankshaft

Micropolished B20 Crankshaft

Type R flywheel - turns out was off by over 6 grams, so though still stock, will mate with the new clutch quite nicely.

Exedy Clutch - 08950B was balanced with the flywheel.

Reconditioned LS Rods w/ Wiseco pistons - 6 grams off rebalanced. They don't come balanced from the factory because they knew smart people would have them rebalanced at a machine shop.. So for those that get aftermarket pistons for any engine, they don't come balanced.

11.8-12.3:1 compression

ARP Rod bolts were installed and the big ends were re-rounded

The rod ends were heated in order to press the wrist pins into the piston. We then had to make sure the c-clips came in the package with the piston rings. Please note the weight markings on the piston.

Here's a video on how its done for those that don't know.

We're waiting on the injector clips, Oil pump, water pump, Gates timing belt, new oil pick up and windage tray, and milling of the head.
Once andy assembles the engine, we're rockin' and rollin.

For now he'll be either staying with the Spoon, or going for Spoolin' Performance's T*DA Racing header. This car will still be retaining A/C and power steering.

Thumbsup for a very well thought out, thoroughly researched and well executed project. For any up and coming HT members that are looking for an example of how to do it right....look no further.

I definitely appreciate the blessing, especially coming from the Skunkworks.com OGs (that's how I remember you guys from like '98). After our conversations, I feel as though we are well prepared. The budget's a little over what we thought orginally, but in the end, it will all be worth it.

Thanks again for the Technical information today regarding the cam/valvetrain install specifications. Our Cylinder head guy appreciated it so that we could make sure this will run smooth.

with the amount of machine work put into those rods. why not get forged rods as well? or save some $$ and get oem cast pistons. Really interested to see where this goes. I always enjoy your builds.

Actually, it really wasn't that expensive compared to what you're seeing because we did an entire package. it was about $60 to recon the rods. $50 to polish crank, $40 for the ARP rod bolts (remember, B20/D16 bolts are less expensive than the VTEC ones). Balancing the entire assembly was $200, Pistons were $450. No charge for the resurfacing of items. Even a set of decent forged rods would have been $300 a set

We didn't want to use a cast piston because none of those offered gave us the compression we wanted with the build we were making. It was either too low, or too high. Plus, there was a warranty associated from Wiseco from our machine shop, so it was nice added insurance.

This wasn't about what was necessarily cheaper. It was about what was correct for the application. I'm not saying we're swimming in dough, its just if you're going do it, just don't eff around.
