Default THE REAL WORLD... which is faster?

i got bored so i did a quick photoshop

always wondered about this. which line would actually be faster in a drag race?

B peaks at 9,500rpm 220hp and keeps it til 10,500rpm and shifts at 11,000rpm

A peaks at 8,500rpm 200hp and shift at 9,200rpm

A has advantage of 10-15hp throughout the midrange over B

A has advantage of 5tq throughout the midrange over B

It would depend on the transmission, I'd think.

With some kind of perfect CVT engine B would definitely be faster though

reason why i ask is because i want to end the long debate of high midrange/high top end vs. mid midrange/very high top end in a drag race and which one would actually be a better build for racing

all you knowledgable people chip in

Unable to tell without specific rpm numbers and gear ratios.

gearing are the same for both setups. rpms should be self explanatory according to the graphs

its pretty much just a "area under the curve" battle

Exactly. Assuming that the perfect transmission for each was available, B will always be faster. Without that assumption, then more than just a horsepower graph is needed.

It depends how much more "B" holds the power. If its only to9k RPM for example A will win drag race. It will have more AVERAGE power throughout the race. If for example "B" can do 10k rpm then it can stay mostly in its curve and have more average power.

in that case

A peaks at 8,500rpm 200hp and shift at 9,200rpm

You could probably be more specific. But even if you were, and produced a dyno along the lines of what you describe, like this:

And used that more precise information, along with gear ratios, to produce a graph like this:

You would still have some work to do to find out which engine would actually be faster in some arbitrary sense (0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile), and you'd probably have to factor in a bunch of other less easily computable (but no less relevant) things like launching and traction and whatnot.

But then you would totally be bench racing, and nobody seems to like bench racers

That is my favorite dyno comparison. D16 VS B16. The D will walk the B anyday of the week. Even with the gearing advantage of the B, the D will still outpull any rpm and be faster because of more average power.

thats too different. according to the specs, the b16 only had 2hp more compared to the built d16 and revved a little higher, but the d16 destroyed it everywhere in the powerband.

doesnt really match what i was asking for.
