Mine measured about 10/32-11/32 of an inch uncompressed

Maybe the Hondata Style one's but not the Outlaw Engineering

Mine were a little under 3/8'', The Phenolic spacer was around 1/4'' plus two paper gaskets.

Sounds like a great product for the money right? I couldn't have been more happy after seeing the difference in temperature, So i headed back to the dyno to see if there was any noticeable improvements there.
(I was on the dyno and fully tuned the car 2 days prior to install)

The results were a 5-7hp loss throughout the entire powerband an noticeably bad gas mileage. I was sure this was a fluke and did everything i could to get the power back on the dyno, but it just wasn't happening. I was also lost as to the now terrible gas mileage when on the dyno the wideband was reading completely normal.

I pulled my hair out all night and talked to an experianced tuner / engine builder that i really trust, and decided i would take the kit all back off and head back to the dyno the following day. The results, I had the 5-7hp back.

Why? Injector placement. When you measure these gaskets out they are damn near 3/8 of an inch thick. Which means the injector will also be spaced back 3/8 of an inch and now spraying at the floor of the head. Which for me translated to lost power, and horrible gas mileage.

This is just my experiance and .02

Back from the dead:

You could simply mill a couple of degrees off the flange on the intake manifold and have the best of both worlds!

I remember dropspeed told me he milled 2deg off the stock itr intake manifold and gained power everywhere.

This tells me that even the oe angle isn't the best.

thanks afor sharing.

I never test on my dyno the effect of putting the injectors more far from the head.

The injector phasing could be adjust in the ecu to tune that.

Injector phasing isn't going to alter the placement/angle that the injectors are spraying at.

Ive used this kit a while back on my supercharged setup using a sk2 pro manifold and 70mm tb, although i have no dyno feedback i can tell you upon installing the kit and going out for the first test drive i noticed better throttle response and the motor got into boost a bit smoother i wanna say and the power band felt crisp all the way to redline. It just felt a bit more smoother. Im currently running this kit but not the throttle spacer cause iv upgraded to a 74mm tb and the sk2 ultra manifold.

I'm using rdx injector that are shorter than oem b18's plus the outlaw kit and after reading this post
also consider that fuel cool down valve stem..
removing the im gasket after tuned it changed afr at the point that is not safe to race the car ?

No. It's not that deep. Our project lsv from about 3 years ago was running rdx injectors and the outlaw kit. It's completely fine and has raced in several circuit tracks with no issues at all.
No need to overthink

You might be right there, But i don't think you have enough material to remove in order to compensate for the thickness of the gasket and that extra angle.

Changing the phasing won't effect where the fuel is entering the cylinder, just when.

Agreed i am not saying the kit does not work i am just saying the design is not ideal (for a naturally aspirated setup), It does a great job as a heat barrier but not so great in the power department. I can see it working great on a forced induction setup where limiting the heat soak may be more important than losing a few hp.

Well this topic may be moot bc it looks like outlaw engineering doesn't make these anymore?

I think they discontinued them a little over a year ago now. I would be curious to see how a GE/Hondata/Skunk thermal IM gasket compares to the outlaw set. I am debating on whether or not I should put on on my B20V or just run oem. I wont have a single OEM part on my motor though...

I've never heard of that before, very interesting. Was the 2° milled off the tob or bottom of the manifold flange? Basically, tipping it up? Or down?

Damn, that's sad to see. Granted they're other IM gasket available, it sucks they discountined this, as it was a full kit, multiple gaskets and even the extended studs. They really covered all points of heat soak, from the TB to the IM and even had a gasket for the IACV, for when it gets heat soaked from the antifreeze running through it. It was a very well put together kit and does the job it was designed to do, very well at that(as seen in other posts here), which is reduce heat soak on the intake side of the engine.

More material was taken off the upper side of the flange, thus tipping it up slightly.

2deg isn't enough to affect fitment or anything, but gave the air and fuel a better shot at the ports.

Iirc, it was worth several hp NA.

I actually picked up a couple of MPG's on the beater after my Hondata gasket failed and I replaced with a factory one. IAT's definitely read about 25* higher in the summer with the paper gasket. Getting above 130*F in traffic is pretty typical, around 110* if I'm on the highway or gettin' on it. I Don't have any before/after numbers, but I (not surprisingly) did have to rework the temp offsets and fuel maps a bit. Some weird, random rich conditions also went away. All of it points to poor injector aiming. This was with the stock 240cc dinosaur injectors. It's pretty safe to assume that you'd be a bit better if using a more modern injector that has better atomization properties. The point of aiming at the backs of the valves is twofold, it cools the valve and flashes the fuel into a vapor.

Shortly after that, I switched to Bosch EV14 type. They are actually configurable for all of the necessary angles to get them pointed down the ports and at the backs of the valves:

...but you're kind of limited as to whatever your selected vendor actually offers. I played around with a spare head and manifold and some welding rods to see how the gasket affects the spray, you can see right away if you do this that some of the fuel is going straight onto the port floor as you start backing the manifold away.

I was able to get a twin cone spray with mostly correct angles for my setup, not sure how they would work out if I went back to a thermal gasket. With the new injectors, I had to add some tip-in trim, indicating to me that the old injectors were pissing fuel all over the walls instead of down the port.
