ok so i bought this suposedly jdm b16 shortblock and asumming its a b16a i bought it then relized the next morning itsa b16A2.so i called the guy an he told me its a obd1 2nd gen jdm motor bla bla bla. this isnt my first honda motor an i have B18c1 b16a first gen and 2nd gen an from what ive been told any 5 digit engine code is usdm an have the VIN# rivited to the bottom right corner of the block i also have a friend with 99 si an his has a vin too.also i may state that it has no signs of drilling and or grinding done to were the vin normaly goes, its still has that valve cover like tecture. and yesterday at school i looked at a b18c and b20b blocks and they both had 2 factory holes wher a vin would attach.

HELP me out honda tech i dont wanna wonder if my motors stolen that im bout to put a bunch of money into.

Yes, JDM B16A gen 2 do not have the 5 digit code.

i kno that i had a gen 2 b16a but my question is what motor do i have. i thought all us motors have vin numbers.

ive never seen something like this and my manual for b16a2 says the main bearning code is stamped on the flywheel side of the block and mine is stamped were the oil pan surface is like my classmates b20b. also ive seen a b16a2 block befor a while back and then vin was drilled out then tried to fill in/grind smooth an thers no way to cover up the grind marks.

i'm sorry but he lied to you, a b16a2 is a OBD2 usdm 99-00 honda civic si motor. for the jdm motors obd1 is b16a siR and obd2 is b16b CTR.......

They started the vins in 1996. So the engines built late 1996 and after have the vin tags. I have found some 96 single cams without tags that are legit. The engine you have is definately NOT a JDM engine. JDM engines don't have numbers on them after the engine code... If it was a JDM engine it would simply be stamped "B16A"... It sounds like a 99-00 Si engine but it could also be a Del sol Vtec engine as well. The US did get those, remember? Anyways, is the tag completely gone or is it cut? Are the holes in the front of the block for the rivets there or not? You can tell when someone has tried to tamper with the VIN tags... The rivets aren't really rivets, they are screws that break the head off when installed. They are stamped with the Honda logo also.

the del sol motor that you speak of is the b16a3 imo the best b16 ever produced

The A3 is identical to the A2. So I'm not sure why you think of it as the "best" B16 ever produced.

the vin number was not tampered with ther is no vin and i kno were hondaputs them and i have seen a tampered with block befor and mine looks perfect with the same wrinkle look to it all around with no holes at all???

If its a B16A2 from a 99-00 Si, then it should have a vin stamp. If the number UNDER the B16A2 stamp starts with 0 then its a warranty engine and it won't have a vin tag. It should also be painted red where the B16A2 stamp is as well if its warranty, but this could have worn off.

a2's are from 99-00 si... for damn sure...i would take it to chp see what they tell u if your that worried...and tell the seller to go with you hahaha

watch out for stolen blocks.... that's all i can say. you should be careful man cuz we live in san diego and if you ever get your hood popped and cops dont see vin tags for that year engine they might trip. they could assume its stolen and impound your car.

Is it possible that someone stamped a "2" on the end of the "B16a" engine code? I've seen it done before. That would explain a lot.

thanks everyone for ur input im trying not to worrie to much cuz i kno for shur its not tampered with. hybrid96ek had a very goodpoint you must be a honda dealer tech but the stamp starts with a 5? and the a2 is a legit stamp from the factory. sounds like it could be a obd1 because it doesnt have a crank sensor like my 98 gsr did. but if it is a pre 96 that you said doesnt have vins then what car would it be out of?

i'ld also like to know this, i have a a2 block aswell with no vins and no holes where the vin was. Had to look up pictures to see where the vin was suppose to be but my block shows no signs of ever having a plate there

u an me both brotha. i even compaired to like 3 other jdm an usdm blocks. wtf absolutly no signs of grinding, or drilling and filling????


every delsol car and motor ive seen are all B16A3

According to the California state referee, the B16A3 was used in the 94-95 Del Sol Vtecs. The 96 was a B16A2. Just a little info.

If it doesn't have a crank sensor then I would think its an OBD-1. Of course thats not to say someone changed the oil pump. Anything is possible.
