H22 SUNK2 PRO 3 CAMS W/ REGULAR SKUNK2 SPRINGS RETAINERS???
posting for a friend of mine...
so my team mate is almost done with his motor set up (h22, 90mm, 13.1comp, h2b). he wants to run skunk2 pro 3's with his old skunk2 valvesprings and retainers. a lot of people say/recommend the skunk2 pro series valvetrain with the pro series cams. do you think its safe to run the pro 3's with the regular skunk2 valvetrain? would you recommend using the pro series valvetrain? whats the worst that can happen from your experiences?
please chime in h22 skunk2 pro series users

This has been debated many, many times. Yes, Skunk2 recommends their PRO series valvetrain be run with their PRO cams. If something were to happen and you weren't running the recommended stuff I highly doubt they will cover it under warranty. I have seen people run various brands of valvetrain with the PRO series cams in the past.
It is truely up to the engine builder - to each his own.

Pro cams require pro valvetrain.
Why risk that $x,xxx dollar motor for 300 dollar valvetrain?

If you run the pro series springs, then you will also need to purchase the new Skunk2 spring seats. I believe that the H22 Pro springs are actaually B series pro springs, thus needing the higher seat.

Sounds like you already have your answer...
Skunk2 Pro Series Springs are "recommended" for Pro 1 Cams but "required" for the Pro 2 and 3 Cams.
Pro 3 Cams have Gross Lift numbers in access of .500"
Tuner Series Springs have a max travel of .535" and weigh 46 grams ea.
Pro Series Springs have a max travel of .630" and weigh 42 grams ea.
**Importance Of Valvetrain Weight Reduction**
Many enthusiasts may wonder why Skunk2 spends so much time and effort into designing valvetrain components with reduced weight. Why is it so important for us to chase after grams? Without getting into the mathematics we thought we would try to provide enthusiasts with a simple explanation. By replacing Stock valvetrain components with Skunk2 Valves, Valvespings, and Retainers reciprocating mass can be reduced by an average of 12-14 grams. 1 gram is equivalent to the weight of a paper clip, which may not seem like much weight, but at 9000 rpm, 14g result in a force of approximately 32kg or 70lbs. Reducing the force that the spring needs to control greatly improves valvetrain stability, high rpm performance, and power output.
BTW all this info is avail. on the electronic Skunk2 Catalog which cam be downloaded directly from their website http://www.skunk2.com

I dont know about the retainer issue because the head I have doesnt currently have guides in it, so I couldnt measure the retainer to seal clearance, but I tested a "tuner" spring yesterday and got about 80 lbs on the seat and 220 lbs @ .500". I cant remember for sure, but I think they coil-binded at about .590". I know for sure it was more than .535".
FWIW, I couldnt find seat and open pressures on their website.
