b18c vs k24
the other day i was in the my dads 98 GSR and some guy in a rsx-s came by and tailgated us and honked 3 times and i was guessing he wants to race and my dad got excited and he just took off. so the guy won which was no surprise cause it was a type-s, and it made me wonder what are some ways my dad can do to his engine to make it faster than a type-s without swapping or boosting. you guys got any idea??

Is this car a DD? or what? is this your dads car? yours? do you have a budget in mind? Have you done any mods to it yet?
just depends how much reliability and ease of maintenance you want to sacrifice in the pursuit of power. sticking NA means less return on your dollar spent but also spending 75-50% less then going boosted but boosted generally delivers increase of 40-150% WHP power depending on the build and tune quality.
Since your here basically the best way to get a nice noticeable gain would be:
PSSWRD JDM power chamber intake. $220
4-1 exhaust..ITR or better. $150-800
Cat-back of some type(comes down to just how loud you want to go) $150-500
CAMS...ITR or better $350-700
ECU Tune. (Chrome, Neptune, whatever your preferred solution is) $150-400
with all that you should be able to net a Gain between 15-30WHP, and if you don't mind using used parts for the Exhaust( I personally don't believe in spending big for name brand here except for a descent muffler) You can make it all happen for between $1100-2200 depending on the parts You would want to go with have a car....that would be the easiest way to get closer to competing with a stock RSX-S. He would still have power but you would have weight advantage making it a hell of a lot closer.

A PLM toda rep header will **** on just about everything on this motor.
3" exhaust will get you the most power
In the stock GSR platform cams are limited. Skunk2 Tuner 2's have done well
Just tune on Crome for now, no need for anything crazy and fancy
Bottom line, if you really want to compete with a K24 it's going to take more displacement and internal work....or forced induction.

And preferably a PR3/ITR Head so he can run bigger cams an higher CR pistons....but that might be beyond what he wants do since the "what could be done to make more power" question was really open ended.

In my old 1995 GSR all I had was a short ram intake (eBay garbage), RMF replica header, and a 2.5" eBay exhaust with no cat. I raped a 2007 Civic Si. Idk how much faster a stock Type S is (they're K20, btw, not K24 if that's what you're thinking), but I'm pretty sure I could've handled one without too much issue.

Yeah the '07 Si is a bit fatter then a RSX-S like 200-400lbs heavier while the GSR should be about 200+ pounds lighter then the RSX so that along with mods would give him a fighting chance goign heads up from a dig but would still probably loose once rolling in the higher speeds

ITBS, a good header, a good 2.5' exhaust, injectors and a dyno tune would woop on that rsx-s/

Properly tuned ITB's will destroy the stock manifold everywhere. For the amount of time and money they take though I would not recommend them in this situation.

ITB's run what $850-2200? then proper ECU tuning is like another $400+ lol might be overkill for dads DD lol

which is why i just bought one today for my lsvtec. certainly an excellent buy i recommend one if you stay on motor.
i know its the all motor forum but im just curious why you are opposed to forced induction. something like a 50 or 57 trim with an inline pro manifold and honestly a real basic setup will be reliable with a tune and will likely make 250-300whp at or below 10 psi so you can stay stock map sensor. thats certainly enough to make a gsr trap 100--110mph and take out an rsx
if you just want a bit more power for randomness like this rsx incident these guys are right about nitrous as much as i dislike it.
if you are really looking to add power to make it substantially faster you are going to be ripping the motor apart to some extent even if its just replacing valvesprings to run aftermarket cams. you can also tweak with the gearing to help acceleration. this comes down to goals/budget/mechanical abilities. we can help more with more details on your end.

btw i had a stock internal d16z6 with a greddy kit $1500 setup 250whp that destroyed built n/a k24s and built b-series. can only imagine how many of them ran to these forums asking the same question.. ah the good old days.
