Anyone in here used to be a FI guy?...
I know that there're probably a lot of guys in here who never tried FI. But I'm sure that there are a few who used to boost, but for some reason got tired of it, and decided to go back to NA. My question to you is, what made you go back?

Linear powerband. I've helped quite a few friends build their turbo cars and after having driven them or riding with them, I don't like the lag followed by the crazy rush of power.

I personally like to hear the engine working. Turbo cars are a blast, but its just not the same. I also like the challenge of having to earn the power, instead of just turning up the boost.

I owned two turbocharged cars before falling in love with all motor setups. I can't convince myself that turbos are a good idea anymore

So what I'm getting is linear powerband & throttle response is better than turbo lag. But what about these GT turbos with less lag? Still too much?

for me was much more severe traction issues with turbo street car, even thoguh it pushed over 500@wheels on dyno still drove on the street with low boost and it spun way tooo much ... all motor car pushed over 250@wheels and spins but not as angrily as the turbo car.
still like both but all motor is more fun for me knowing that I don't have "the edge" to beat up on people on the street. If racing the domestics, I appreciate having boost though cause its hard to keep up with them all motor to all motor.

all turbos have some sort of lag, regardless of whether they are ceramics, or ball bearing turbos. never will they have the response of a properly built all motor car.
couldnt agree more with these guys on how the car drives!!! NA cars are sooooooooooo much more fun to drive!!! Everything taken above the all-motor cars just feel out of control and just rip. turbo cars are generally faster especially in the higher gears but they lack the excitement of the NA car.
as far as NA cars not keeping up with forced induction cars and domestics welll got a secret weapon...... its all about the bottle just my two cents.

Re: Anyone in here used to be a FI guy?... (run-it-red)
i spent a lot of money on my all motor lsvtec and i now make 198whp and 151tq and going all motor was the bigest mistake of my life. granted that this is in a full weight integra but still the car is slow as ***** and can never compare to any turbo cars. i run high 14's and get beat by stock single cams with a basic small turbo set up.
i'm building my second motor now. fullly built turbo and i'm never going all motor again.
i'm sorry but i just dont see any fun or any real power with small displacement + all motor+ 91 octane + heaver integra. i like my cars not striped out with power everything and ps and ac. u just cant have a fast car with all that and run 91 octane

i had a ls turbo civic. i loved it, very fast....from a roll. no traction for ****, problem after problem, oil leaks and mind you i do **** right and not ghetto. boost is cool but i like making power from nothing but the motor itself.

if you asked the same question in the FI forum, you will most definitely find more people saying they went AM to FI.
i personally think if you have a light street car, all motor is a lot of fun, but if you're building a track ***** there is nothing like the top end rush of a fast turbo car

It's not all bad - at least you gained a heck of a lot of experience during your build, right?

Re: Anyone in here used to be a FI guy?... (run-it-red)
I was boosted last year and after spendnig a lot of time, money, and effort I ended up cracking a ringland the day after I got my hondata tuned. I figured my B18c1 was a tired motor given it had over 100 000km (lots of lapping sessions) on it therefore I ignored this mishap and decided to replace the longblock and give it another shot. I installed a b16 in there and got her tuned. Made great power (268whp/176ft-lb @ 8psi on a greddy 18g turbo) however that power didn't last long once again. Cracked ring land after about 2 weeks. I didn't really get to enjoy the setup either, raced very little. Once the second motor let go, I decided that I don't have the time and money to continuously dump into my ride. At this point, I wanted something that was reliable above all.
Bottom line is, if you don't have a lot of time, money and LUCK, don't go turbo! In my case, I had alot of bad luck!! I'm not saying that this will happen to everyone, cause it won't, however turbo setups are way more tempremental then All motor.

well yes i learned a lot. but still it was a big mistake to not go turbo in the first place and now i'm doing everything twice.
and yes stock itr make about 165-175whp but they do run 15's most of the time

Do u have like sandbags in your trunk...you should run alot faster than high 14's with almost 200hp all motor.

I won't go as far as saying you made a mistake. You better hope that your boosted expereince goes well or you will be kicking yourself in the *** after.

I've never been an FI guy, but I learned from other's experiences and the fact is that going turbo is at least twice of the money spent than all motor cars and once you got it tuned at 9psi considering how easy is to play with your boost controller you get curious how fun could be run at 12psi, then 14psi, then 16psi, then 18psi and then BOOOM!!!! bye bye engine....hehe

i love hearing a nasty all motor engine just loping away at idle....
dont get me wrong, hearing a turbo monster spool up and take off is cool, but all motor is just way cooler....

i agree... i went through two turbo kits put together in my em1 and they were both cool... i had bad luck with the first one because for some reason the shaft broke in half inside the turbo during a race ... second one just didn't impress me much ... went n/a and i just couldn't be any happier... lumpier cams just sounds better IMO.
