New info on oem RSX/EP3 Oil Filters
So I went to the Honda dealer to pick up an oil filter for my EP3. Guy looked it up and got it and layed it on the counter.
Me: That looks like it's too big. It looks like the filter that the 88-00 Civics take
Parts Guy: That what the computer says.
Me: No, really. That's the older and larger filter. The 02+ Si tales the smaller filter.
Parts Guy: We got an email saying that Honda is now recommending that the 02+ Si (and maybe RSX) use the older style filter. It should work just fine.
Me: No thanks for now--think I'll do some checking on my own, plus I have about 4 Puroilator Pure-Ones in the garage that I could use instead.
So, has anyone heard anything like this? Perhaps the older and larger filter will work, but I find it funny that Honda change filters about a year or more after the car has been released. I would have loved to see the memo that was sent out.

Re: New info on oem RSX/EP3 Oil Filters (luciferi)
...tried to find the thread, to no avail, but a guy on ephatch.com took his EP into the dealer for an oil change and they put on the wrong oil filter. The guy drove the car and the oil filter came off ...long story short the engine blew and he got a new car out of the deal because of the wait time he would have had to go through and parts/motor was not readily available. He had an 02 but got a 03 as a replacement

If you scroll down to where they have the filter for sale it'll have an explanation i guess.
I'm still using the smaller filter and will not the big filter though.

"-> Note: This is a larger filter than the Civic originally came with. Honda has recently published that it interchanges with the smaller filter. Honda has announced plans to discontinue this filter in the near future and only offer the smaller filters."
<--confused So for now they only offer the bigger filter, but will soon discontinue it for the (origional) smaller one.

Re: New info on oem RSX/EP3 Oil Filters (Joker)
The current part number for ALL 01 and later Civics and 02 and later RSX's has been superceded to the POH (middle 3 numbers in the Honda part numbr oil filter)
The old filter will be sold out of stock and not to be restocked or produced. If you go to Honda and have them look up the oil filter out of the electronic parts catalog (not by memory)the part number will supercede to this "new" number. They have redesigned the POH filter to include more applications.
This filter will fit ALL Honda and Acura vehicles with the exception of the S2000, NSX and early Legends.
Hope this helps..

Well they are because I work at honda but they are discontiunuing the big ones. THey are going to keep on using them until the dealership runs out of stock with the big ones. So it doesnt really matter which one yoiu use.

Just went to the autoparts store. I guess it's a moot point now because Puroilator now makes the EP3/RSX application (14610).
Just as good or better than oem Honda and a lot cheaper usually.

Re: New info on oem RSX/EP3 Oil Filters (Joker)
Not sure really...but the "nw" filter holds about a quart of oil. The "old" stye holds about 0.6 of a quart..Might also have to do with the internal bypass medail section of the filter (A failsafe just in case the filter became clogged) or may have to do with the filter media nad oil pressure itself. A denser filter material will create more back pressure "slightly" raising oil pressure at startup...
You never know...They change things for simpler reasons too...such as cost of the contract to Fram to manufacture 2 completely different filters...
Jeff
If I hear more, I let you know

I just use the old style bosch filter. 3312. they also make the new style, i believe 3323.
the bosh filter is essentially the same as the mobil1 filter but 1/2 the price. 98% SPE. doesn't get much better than that.

Except the fact that there are *many* reported cases where the Mobil1 filters have blown-up on vtec motors (this has personally happened to me).
Mobil1 filters are made by champion labs and have absolutely nothing to do with Mobil.

The new honda filters are supposed to give a lil more oil pressure and are just as good as the previous big brother
There is nothin like an O.e honda part....the oil filters especially

big/small filters work fine. Like the guy said, all part #s have been changed to the small fram ones.
if you want a regular one, just get an s2000 one. they are japanese made.

Re: New info on oem RSX/EP3 Oil Filters (Accord94DX)
Just for everyones info, Honda is doing away with the big filters and sticking all Hondas with the small. They both work the same. It's just impractical for Honda to make two different types of filters. If anyone has any doubts about the change from big to small, just look at Toyota. They have been using shot glass size filters since the 80's. I have faith in Honda. But if anyone is interested in stocking up on big filters I can get you cases of them at cost plus shipping. PM me if interested.
