It all varies. Payment depends on your credit and down payment. As for insurance that all depends on your driving record, age and state you live in.Type S isn't gonna be cheap on insurance.Personally I would look into getting an older Type S, like an 02-03 with good mileage. There have been no major changes in the RSX from 02-04 so unless you like the new style of the 05 I'd get an older one. That should lower your payment and save you some $$$.

450/month with $1500 trade in. Purchase price was $24500, I had spoiler, wheel locks, and cargo net added in 11/01 for 2002 RSX-S. Insurance WAS $150/month which also includes full coverage on a Civic for both my wife and me. I say WAS because it will go up since my accident 2 weeks ago. Damn shame...my front end is banged up...estimate is at $9000!! I hope they fix it well...I just put a $2500 audio system in it but some fool was speeding at an intersection and somehow I am at fault!?! According to my insurance State Farm. I was going 15 mph and the I hit him on drivers front fender but my airbags didn't deploy. Anyway, I hope it drives the same after they fix it. I love everything about the car though but am considering trading it in for a more practical (boring) Accord.

buying a car based on monthly payments is crazy talk. You want the cheapest OTD price and then you figure out the financing. I got my '03 with 3 miles on it by emailing all the so cal dealers. I was willing to drive pretty far for a cheaper price. One got back to me and basically said ok to my price over the phone. I started with $23,500 OTD with lip kit. He said I could get the car for that price and buy the kit on my own. So I said $23k OTD. He said let me call you back.

He called back and said ok. So I got to Keyes Acura and asked for the Pearl White with the lowest mileage. They had 3 that day and I got the one with the lowest mileage. 3 miles. I drove it around the block just to make sure it was fine. And then went to do the paperwork.

I was paying by check for the whole thing. But when I went to do the final money part of the paperwork, they asked if I was paying in full or financing. So my price of $23k OTD had nothing to do with the way I was paying.

So in the end you should be able to get the Type-S for $23k otd, since I got my '03 while they were still hard to negotiate on. From there is where you try to figure out the interest rate and monthly payments. Don't do it the other way around, you will end up paying a lot more for your car.

About Insurance. I am in Glendale so we are probably similiar with insurance. I called most of the big names and Mercury was the cheapest. It seems like they are the cheapest for everyone I have talked to with different cars.

I just got my renewal for full coverage and it was $922 for 6 months. I am 25 and an Engineer. So I get a 10% discount and whatever else goes with my age and how long I have been licensed. Of course I still never got any discount for being 25, unless the type-s jumped even higher in insurance when I turned 25.

And just to give some comparisons. I checked these cars with the same coverage on mercuries website.
RSX Type-S $972
NSX $1100
Porsche Non Turbo $960
S2000 $970
Lancer Evo $910
350z $950

So the Type-S is pretty high, but look at what I am comparing to.

Well I paid $22,300 for the car, however I financed $25,000 through my works credit union. I paid title, tax, tags through my loan, some little options, and the dealership wrote me a check for $1500 back. I pay $414 on a 6 year loan at 5.9% APR. My insurance is $575 every 6 months.

I pay $240.00/mo for my 03 Type S. I put $4000 down and I had $4000.00 equity in my trade in (00 Eclipse GT)

I work in auto finance...as far as budgeting goes...the general rule of thumb is that your car payment should be no more than 1/5 of your take home pay. For example...if you make $2000/month after taxes you shouldn't pay more than $400.00/month.

that car payment thing doesnt seem right. since you are supposed to be putting 1/3 of before taxes for a mortgage. Seems crazy if someone was doing that plus 1/5 of after taxes on a car. That would be such tiny savings/emergency funds.

I think I make more than average and can't imagine doing that. But I really have to agree on that extra warranty stuff. Though health insurance is important no matter what. I was playing basketball in a tournament and my tooth went through my lip. I had 8 stitches (thankfully my teeth were somehow unharmed) and it cost close to $1000 at the ER. $20 though with my work's insurance. Maybe thats not the health insurance you are referring to.

I think there was a general rule of what you make is supposed to be some percentage of what total cost of a car you can afford. Only if I could remember that. I guess I see too many people riding around in expensive cars that can't logically back these things up with take home pay. Oh yeah, every dollar you can possibly save buying your new/used car just goes straight back into your pocket, plus you won't be paying interest, tax, or renewal fees on that.

Thats another little thing about not buying options on the car, well in California I think your renewal is based on the total price of the car. Please correct me if I am wrong.
