car wint rev past 4400 rpms!?
i usually post in the integra forum but i am trying to help a friend figure out what the problem is with her 2003 civic Si. Whenever she revs the car it will be normal until 4400 or so rpms, its hard to tell exactly where it stops, but it wont rev any higher. the rpms just bounce back and forth like a rev limiter would at redline, but around the 4k mark. Now i know vtec kicks in at 4400 on my gsr, but i dont know about this Si. I amlost positive it something electrical, the engine light is on. the the maintenence required one, but the check engine one. Any ideas would be grea to see what we are working with here, thanks, jon

sounds like low oil pressure to me. most likely caused by a low oil level.
that is if there is no CEL.
if there IS a CEL, take it to the dealership and have them check it out. I threw a CEL once that put my car into limp mode. I got owned by lift throttle oversteer and was going backwards in a forwards gear for a split second. I'm sure my ecu didn't like that one bit. I cleared the CEL and everything was peachy after that. 40k miles later, and it's all gravy baby.

I'd have to agree. Low oil pressure will cause the ecu to go into "limp" mode, but if it's throwing CELs also then I'm not sure. I'm kind of curious since its an '03 like mine. Let us know regardless.

Sounds like limp mode, you probably need oil. I top mine off at least once a month (about a quarter to a half quart).
The "lite" oil we use in the K-series burns quicker.

that is normal .....its a limiter to keep from over revving in nuetral .....you dont need to be revving past 4400 in nuetral anyways ...

That may be true for Integras, but I dont think it is for EP3's.
The EP3 K20A3 vtec "kicks in" at 2200 rpm. I say "kicks in", but thats actually where the economy/ultra-low emissions setting "kicks out" and normal (somewhat agressive) mode takes over. just like on vtec-E for the previous HX civics.
On the RSX-S K20A2, an agressive, traditional vtec really kicks in at 5200 rpms.
I'm citing hondata's research data: http://www.hondata.com/techk20general.html
Also, I've personally bounced mine off the 6800 rev limiter in neutral before while testing a tachometer harness in my driveway.
Lots of people have had the dealer tell them its "limp mode" due to low oil.

I had comparable dilemma, but why should I worry about or try to fix it if its under warrany, right?
So, I took it to the dealer and it ended up being a defective fuel pump.

Come on now, we all know that this is a built in launch control. Think about it, why else would they do something like that? lol Stage the car, hold to floor, let clutch go, or slip. There ya go! You don't know a good thing when it happens.

put in 2-3 quarts and drive around for 10-15 minutes and any dash lights that came on will extinguish.
i put a few quarts of 10-40 from a gas station and the engine got very quiet and it stopped consuming oil. i'm going to go back to 5-30 but use Mobil1 synthetic at second oil change and see how that goes.
