Are brake shims really necessary?
Hey yall,
I just changed my brake pads front and rear. I did both at the same time because my rear passenger side started squeaking first. My EP-3 has 89,xxx miles on it. I drive alot of highway so the brakes last as long as the Energizer Bunny.
Anyway, do the shims serve any real purpose. I left them off. The last time I changed my mother's brakes, a shim slid of the pad and started dragging the rotor. We're fortunate that we caught it because it almost cut through the hub of the rotor. I had to get her a new rotor.
As far as I know the shims are just for noise reduction. I used brake grease and they don't make a peep, so I figure they're not really needed. Anyone care to enlighten me otherwise?
By the way, I used ceramic pads on the rear and carbon metallic on the fronts.

No, they aren't necessary. However they actually do help reduce noise, like squeaking. Not to mention that eventually that brake grease will wear down and start to make noise.
