Default 2005 RSX Type S Warm Stall

My RSX is manual transmission with about 55K miles on it.

When I start the car cold, idle runs normally high for a while and then settles to about 800 RPM -- all is great. If I start the car and run it for just a few minutes and then I restart it-- all is great. If I drive the car until it is warm -- and then restart the car after several hours -- all is great.

But, if I run the car for 30 minutes to an hour and then try to start it again within anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour or two, it stalls. Not every time. This may happen 1 out of every 5 times I try to start it after it is fully warm. It starts fine but will not idle. Immediately stalls if I don't step on the gas peddle to keep it from stalling. Then I have the fun of driving the car without letting it stall. Interestingly, after about 15 minutes of driving like this, it will begin to idle normally.

According to my mechanic, there is nothing evident from looking at the computer. And unfortunately, he was not able to reproduce the problem when I left it in his shop for a day.

I welcome any thoughts anyone has on possible causes/remedies.

Thanks--

Michael

Likely your IACV (idle air control valve) needs a cleaning. But don't go spraying random air intake cleaner into the throttle body or anything. I messed up my MAP sensor that way on me.

I would try just taking the intake pipe off the throttle body first, take some air intake cleaner (buy at autozone or w/e), spray it on a rag and try to clean the inside of the throttle body by hand. See if that helps at all. If not, you'll likely have to remove the IACV and clean it and replace the gasket on it.

#1 is the IACV in the below pic.

X2 for cleaning the IACV, solved my stalling problem as well. It's easiest to just remove the coolant lines from the TB and pull the entire TB assembly off the intake manifold. Otherwise it's a PITA to reach the IACV.

Also be prepared to replace the phillips head screws that secure the IAC to the TB. They are torqued down and will most likely strip (I had to use vice grips to loosen them). I replaced them with stainless allen head bolts.
