I mean is the different rear suspension and the chassis bracing enough to notice a big difference? Is the handling much sharper, or only a little bit?

Stock for stock yes the handling is much sharper. The R is more "raw" feeling for lack of a better word. I don't know if it's a little bit or a lot different but yes it's noticeable.

The best thing to do is drive one. Obviously you have owned/driven a GSR, go drive the Type R. It's going to be hard to get how it feels by someone else describing it.

Although, if you aren't prepared for having one of the biggest theft targets in the US, don't even bother. You're in Chicago, so maybe just stick with the GSR and throw some ITR flavored upgrades in it.

I think there would be a big difference, better brakes, suspension, stiffer chasis, it looks better, it deffinately has a raw feel. I went from an auto LS to my type R and never looked back.

OP: What do you do with your car? I.E. auto-x, road race, drag race or do you just drive around from point A to point B?

If you road race (at racetracks, hopefully), you'll notice a big difference.

If you just drive around from point A to point B, but you do it with gusto, and you enjoy getting on the gas hard and/or cornering hard at least every once in a while, then again, you'll notice a big difference.

If you just drive around in rush hour commuting traffic, then you might not notice a big difference (other than the fact that the ITR is LOUDER).

Thanks for the answers. It sounds like the Type R is what I am looking for.

I would buy a brand new car, except there are no new cars I really want. The new Si has gotten too heavy. Plus the futuristic instrumentation is too strange for me. The Sti and Evo are way too heavy. A Corvette is a little out of my price range, and the 370Z is a bit too heavy.

I like the GSR, except it is getting a little old and high in the mileage. I like everything about it, except I would like something a little sharper.

The other thing I was thinking about was an Evo 8 or 9, except it is hard to find one that hasn't been completely modified. So it looks like I am in the Type R market.

I'm curious as to how many people giving input here actually have an ITR. I've owned two, and I feel the difference between the two cars is night and day. You really need to drive one for yourself, though. It's definitely worth the extra money to upgrade to an R. GL, and post pics if you get one!

Good point. I upgraded from a 98 gsr. And the difference was amazing. Just how it rode and responded. Power wise yeah theres a little difference. Not like going turbo from na though.

to the OP i have both cars. i have a 99 SSBP gsr that is a DD and the 2000 R that is the track *****.

there is a nice mountain road very close to my house, and when i take my gsr up there the car has to try very hard to accomplish the same things my R does with out even breaking a sweat. a rough approximation... say my gsr has to give close to 85-90 % effort on this road while the R maybe uses 30-40% of its capabilities on the same road. there is a profound difference (to me) in my 2000 R's handling, braking performance, etc.

your best bet is to seriously go drive one and you'll see what all the R badges are for ;-)

i went from a.....

92 EG8 with ksports, ITR swaybar, 4 point cage, etc...

to a

00 EJ6 hatch with ksports, comptech strut bars, etc...

to a

95 EJ1 with ksports, ITR swaybar, comptech strut bars etc...

And NONE of them with all the suspension upgrades hold a candle to the feel and handling abilities of my basically stock 98 R. You will notice a night and day difference in feel, and you will never look back, except to make sure your car is still there before you've even made it into the restaurant.

You live in the Chicago area. If you DD it or park it outside, it will get stolen. Don't waste one. If you're looking for a fun toy for evenings/weekends..then yeah, ITR > GSR.

We have a '94 GS-R and an '01 ITR, both bone stock.

NOT true. I wouldn't recommend parking it outside overnight every night, but otherwise, you can daily drive it without being overly concerned about theft. Although any car can get stolen anyplace, theft is not as likely in Chicago as it is in the big cities on either coast, taking into account the fact that 9 million people live in this area...
