virginia residents - please read!
i recently took my R for a nj state inspection. it passed all the tests, except the steering test; the stupid machine said my steering was binding. i told the tech it wasn't binding, but that i had removed the power steering. apparently nj doesn't care, it wants power steering in my car.
so anyway, i'm selling the R to a guy in virginia. i want to know if anyone is privy to virginia state inspection parameters and if this guy will have the car fail virginia inspection.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!! HOLY ****! [edit, not to be insensitive, I don't have issues quite like that in IL. I hope that wasn't the REASON you sold the R..]
Did you try the, er, CX steering rack? Did you re-plumb the steering rack and vent it at least like in https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=184202 ?

Wear in bushings, kingpins, ball joints, wheel bearings, tie rod ends.
Looseness of gear box on frame, condition of drag link and steering arm.

Wheel alignment and axle alignment.

Not sure that helps. Sounds like it's open to interpretation.
A manufacturer's proposed coilover system was sent back to the drawing board because the tester's mechanic felt it would not pass Virginia safety inspection.
Might just depend on where he takes it.

Re: virginia residents - please read! (George Knighton)
it's not the reason i want to sell it. it's just coincidence that my nj inspection was up in 12/04 and i couldn't sell it until 1/05.
george, thanks for the info. the list only refers to obvious visual damage and makes no reference to the existence of power steering.

ps: george, can you give me the link to where you found that? i want to show this guy that it appears he shouldn't be concerned.
i could just re-plumb the p/s pump to pass inspection, but it's a lot of work. i'd rather spend the time working on my 'new' miata racecar!

He could also call one of the area trooper stations and find out for sure, or he could visit one of the smaller non-emission stations and ask.

I talked to the owner of the shop that has done my past couple of state inspections (it's in the parking lot of one of my stores).
He says that the removal of power steering would not usually by itself cause him to fail a car's Virginia inspection. There would have to be a clear binding in the gears for him to do that, and if the OEM system's properly vented he says that probably would not happen.
He says, to be honest, that it would be unusual for them to even check the steering of a recently manufactured car.
Hope that helps.
