Default Transmission problem...

Car: 2000 Acura Integra Type-R.

Well, I screwed up. I was out for a spirited drive on Friday afternoon, the car had been responding well all day. I was in second gear pulling to the redline, went to shift into third (Not SLAMMING it in, but shifting mildly hard), and I suppose I missed it (Even though it felt like I had the clutch all the way in), ground it pretty good, and let off.

Coasted for a while, pulled to the side and came to a complete stop. Let it idle for a bit to make sure everything was ok, and kept going. Moved through the gears and everything seemed fine, I noticed a bit of whining, but when I went into fourth gear, I wasn't happy to what I heard.

In fourth and fifth gear, there is a very loud whining noise, almost sounds like a bearing spinning VERY loudly. So I'm pretty certain I destroyed something in there.

The car drives fine, except for that noise.

Judging by my description, what does it sound like I did?

Luckily I have a spare ITR Transmission in the warehouse that I can swap in if I do need to take my existing one to get rebuilt. I'd like to keep the original parts in, so the spare Transmission would be in only while the existing one is being rebuilt.

So what does it sound like I've done?

Any help is appreciated.

I noticed something else, now that you mention that.

When you go to put the car into first gear, you have to push the shifter to the left, then forward, correct?

Well when I put the shifter to the left, it sticks and pops. And sometimes it won't go to the left AT ALL, and I have to put the car in third gear to "prime" it so I can even put it to the left.

Sooooo... What could THAT be?

The car got a pretty good shaking when I missed the gear. The glovebox came open, the fuse box cover popped off, my rear view mirror got all misaligned... So perhaps something like this happened?

wow. thats one hell of a shaking your discribing... did your passenger side floor panel come off too? ;p

check your shift linkage bushings/bolts. somtimes thats a problem.

if that checks out OK, then i would assume it is either a shift mechinism or shift fork problem.

would it be possible for you to drain the transmission oil, just to see if any (knock on wood) teeth come out?

I'm sure I could do that sometime tomarrow... Jesus Christ, I hope that's not the case.

But there's no grinding, and it doesn't run rough or variable... It just... Whines in fourth and fifth gear... This is so strange.

yea it is strange. kinda doesnt make sense. the 3rd and 4th are on the same hub, but the 5th is on a differant hub...

ah! just had an idea. there is a collar with needle bearings on the 4th and 5th gear. maby that has somthing to do with it!

if so let me know, i have like 4 extra collars and ****-tons of needle bearings.

Please excuse my igonorance, as I know almost NOTHING about Transmissions... Where/What is the Needle Bearing, and the Collar for Fifth/Fourth Gear?

there is the main shaft, then the collar (think spacer) then needle bearing, then the actual gear.

this is basically what it looks like

if you did expletive up a needle bearing, take the transmission off and replace before you expletive the mainshaft up.

Yeah, luckily I can drive the Audi until I figure it out. So I guess I'll just change out the Transmission, and take it to have it gutted and see what's wrong.

I can't believe missing a gear could cause such a headache.

well you could possibly still drive it but youd risk damaging a good ITR transmission. if you have another car it just makes sense.

Yeah, that's why I have both cars, so downtime doesn't hurt as bad, haha.

But the Transmission is coming out tomarrow, and the spare is going in. So we'll see what happened soon... God I hope it's nothing serious.

I did the same thing and wound up having to trash the whole transmission and buy a new one. You probably messed up some bearings and snychros and the reason 4th and 5th are whining more is because the tranny is obviously under the most strain in those higher gears.

Did the car jerk or "slam" real hard when you mishifted? In my case it did and the whole tranny case got warped because of it... yea I F'ed up bad...

Not trying to scare you man. I advise you take it off and either open it yourself if you know what to look for or take it to a pro to look at before it gets any worse. I waited too long (10 months) and I wound up blowing the whole tranny.

Good luck bro

Woah... That's pretty heavy man.

Guess I might just keep the spare Transmission in, if that's the case. Damnit, I cannot believe a simple missed gear could cause such a problem.

Im not saying yours is as bad as mine was... I seem to just have bad luck with my R. But I'm saying that take it from me and get it checked out before you drive anymore on it. Chances are it might just be a synchro

Wouldn't it be grinding if it were a Syncro?

The gears shift fine, it's smooth as can be... I'm almost thinking it MIGHT be the Differential Bearing? Would that make sense?

The funny thing about transmissions is that it's really tough to speculate what the culprit is. There are so many little needle bearing and ball bearings and then synchros moving in there that it's tough to pinpoint any one without cracking it open. It's not really hard to do yourself, but it is tedious, at least to me. Your best bet, if you have the $$$ is to replace all the bearings now since you have it open. And don't forget to check ALL tolerances.

Mmmm... I think I'll just have all of the bearings replaced, and any other parts that are compromised and or getting worn. I have the money now, I may as well get it done. Damnit... Oh well, life goes on, haha.

yea I am sure its nothing too big man. If its shifting fine and you didn't let the clutch up or anything then I doubt you caused MAJOR damage. Let us know today what you find
