Default Test drove mint '97 ITR #50 Today

I drove #50 today with about 24,000 miles and pretty much in showroom condition. I couldn't find so much as one stone chip! The owner is 45 and has five cars and is doing a little liquidation sale so to speak. Anyway the car was almost perfect except for one thing. When I drove it I could hardly feel VTEC engagement and certainly couldn't hear it. It's 100% stock and has never been moded. The seller is a really honest guy and I don't think he knew what the things are capable of - He's more interested in his Harleys. Anyhow, I thought I felt it kick in at 5900 or so a couple of times but just barely. I've previously had a 2000 with 4-1 header & cat-back and VTEC was definately pronounced and often complemented with a little torque steer when dropping to third doing about 65-70 mph. I drove it spiritedly but nothing crazy, but I did drop the hammer a few times. Does this sound common. Any guys out there still running stock? Any before and after stories? BTW, I got my 2000 with the parts on it so I never drove it stock.

completely stock.. vtec noise will get muffled by the airbox and muffler so you will not hear it as loud as a car with intake or exhaust. i would buy it before soeone else does. how much was he asking?

you also have to remember the 97-98 are slightly under powered than the 00-01 models due to the intake cam.

Oh yeah. I've been casually looking for any year R, originally owned, low mileage, and most importantly, not driven by guys and gals like us.

Good point. I'm still coming to terms with that and the small headlamps. Take the good with the bad.

mine's stock i still feel vtec pull like pretty hard
hmm, maybe u expected more power, but got less, it could be mind over matter
or maybe the vtec is busted, jk, but no it should be fine, just get a mechanic or the dealer to give u one overall check before u buy it, so if something is wrong then you can get pissed at them

Another thing is that the timing could be retarded. That would smooth out the vtec for sure.

Shouldn't the prelude have a huge dip at VTEC causing the car to have a large kick?

I love the 1997 R front ends. That was the R that I fell in love with and some day I will own a 1997 R.

the 97 Integra front end is fine until you drive it in the snow. the area in front of the headlights scoop up snow and reduces visibility. that is not a good thing when visibility is already bad due to blowing snow.
used to own a 95 Integra.
of course if you live in an area where it never snows then you don't have to worry about this.

Mine is still stock, and vtec kicks in hella hard. I always heard it 'kicks in' less after mods because the torque before vtec is better. I would check the oil level.

Nope. Somethings wrong. One of my friends has a 01 prelude, and my ITR is atleast twice as loud when it kicks on, and the kick feels much stronger. It should jerk the car to one side when it kicks on in first gear.

So what happens to the snow on the 98? does it swallow it w/the infamous large mouth bass bumper?

or are you just complaining about integras in general?

...The R doesn't like snow anyway

I own both...

The *audible* change into vtec in the Lude is much louder. But the amount of acceleration the car sees is less.

Also, when The Lude changes over, it is like night and day...ie no power, to power.

The ITR starts to make the *audible* change and then pulls extremely hard shortly after.

The ITR powerband is much smoother IMHO.

Of course, My ITR is totally stock, and the Lude has I/E and lightened flywheel.

Sounds like the exact opposite of what I've seen. My friends lude, you can barly hear vtec kick in. Its very quite. Although my ITR is stock and the prelude is stock as well. The I/E must wake up the lude.

most likely..

It has the damned infamous N1..lol. The flywheel really woke up the H as well..

But I agree with you on the behavior of the ITR during accel/shifting. You can definitley tell that is moving much faster than the Lude.

mostly because it's negligible.. you could dyno a stock 98 and a stock 00 and the 98 can still dyno higher, despite the cam difference..

The "snow scoop" observation goes for all pre-98 Integras in general. I had a 95 LS. ICBW but I thought that may hav been one of the reasons for the change in the area in front of the headlights when the Integra got the facelift in 98.

is the SM in #1 SM Street Mod or Spec Miata.

VTEC in my R is noticeable. maybe you didn't "feel" it in the 97 you drove because you didn't stomp on it or the oil was low like others have already said.
