Default Road Racing has caught my attention.

Alright guys Im eventually going to make this choice before July 22. On July 22 theres going to be some road racing action or so called driving school at the Fontana Speedway. A math professor at Cal Poly has invited me and from what I can determine from the setup i have, I dont think its possible for me to handle 500+whp on the road course. I had plans to reach the 500whp point with a fully built bottom end which might be going through next week unless I can change my mind about it and just stick with the stock ITR block. But when I come to think of it, once I get this build, I wont be able to have the opportunity or money to see a road track again. I was also thinking about just ditching out on the build and work suspension then tune my car. What would you guys prefer? A decent low 13 high 12 second car with the stock block and handle as good or a 500+whp ITR that is capable to get a high 10 pass with an excellent driver. Im weighing my choices here and it seems that having a car that can perform in 2 catagories well is better than just performing superb on the straight aways.

Why won't you be able to to go any road courses anymore? All you need is $100 and a helmet and you can do Streets of Willow, a little more and you can do Buttonwillow. Fontana is usually closer to $200 but the oppurtunity to go is still there. If you have the cash for a 500whp motor buildup, that's like beer money for you right?

Oh yeah and about your question, once you put your car onto a road course, you'll definitely wish you didn't drop so much cash onto your motor. You'll find yourself itching for some of those expensive set of coilovers and some stickier tires.

100 bucks is like beer money? people save up ya know. Thats just like flushing a toliet then trying to flush it again less than a second before the water goes down. Once money goes down, it just cant come back at the same pace you were saving at.

That is what i exactly learned my friend. But like i said, wouldent it be nice to have a car that can perform in more than one catagory? I know sometime in my life I wont be owning a z06 or an M5.

I would definitely choose to build a car that is good in everything instead of just drag racing. Drag gets boring, especially after you start doing stuff that requires you to turn the steering wheel, you become a different person.

You're talking exactly what I'm doing with my car, making the motor formidable enough for 13's at the strip but mainly focusing on how the car is going to handle the auto-x and road courses.

The $100 is so worth it man, do it at least once just to see how you like it. Improving your driving skills is priceless.

thanks for the feedback, I think I just came up with a plan. Finish the build, run a high 10 second pass, save up for an EG then drop the motor in there then try to find a good deal on a clean b18c5 to drop back into the ITR. This plan is going to take me another 2 years but it seems like its worth it. Cant have a 10 second car that will put out good lap times.

That is exactly how I feel. The ITR was focused on autox. Buy a VW Bug if you want to run 9's fo rlike 12k

Im sure all the east coast hard core itr owners will chime in, but basically take your r out to the track.
and see how you like it. most likely you will find you have plenty of hp, and then want to add suspension goodies, bigger brakes, and stickier tires.

i would probably not ever have a 500whp daily driver. i dont think it can be reliable.

you will eat through trannys, use up tires really fast, break axles. and if you ever mis shift of something bad happens to the enigne, its alot of money to get it back running again.

leave the r stock for the most part.

i followed the wrong path in modding my car, I have more go fast goodies than I know how to handle on the track. I learned the expensive way.

another example, I have skied all of my life. Im a very good skier that can ski pretty much anything on the mountain.
Last season I bought some freaking pimp skis, volkl p50 race skis.
I have clocked myself with my gps portable device at over 70mph. I still have not even come close to pushing the limits of my skis, I am going to **** my pants before I reach the limits of my skis. the lesson, until you are at full potential of your speed device, there is no need to buy a faster tool. you will most likely be faster with what you already have.
and it will cost less, and probably give more reliabilty.

Amen!

HALLELUAH....brother!

Now you know what alot of ITR owners know.

The first time I took my ITR on a circuit(road course) I had an epiphany of sorts and it changed my life forever.

would be nice to own such a car, maybe if I actually save up for one and maybe some point in my life id get one. But ill be too old by then, I might as well just enjoy my youth rather than living life working just to buy a 50k chevy.

Damn you CA guys are lucky. The closest track to me is VIR 3+ hours away and the cheapest event I've seen there is like $300.

We are pretty lucky, in SoCal we have crap for drag strips but there are 4 road courses within 3 hours driving distance. NorCal has a few more as well. Oh yeah and did I mention we can drive on them all year long

Hell, even the dragstrip is 1.5 hours. I really wish someone in SEVA would get their chit right and put a track closer to us.

Edit: I was looking at the map of the Streets of Willow and I would give my left nut to have something like that within an hour of here.

Are there any requirements for the road racing? Like a special license? Or is it just money and a helmet? Thanks.

Your car has to pass the tech safety inspection checkout list.

i didnt read anyone elses ideas, so sorry

here is my idea for you.

Keep the 10,000 you'd be spending on building your 500whp engine. Put that in the bank. Withdraw 200 dollars and track your ITR to a road course track. Do some HPDE's in your car and see if you are more interested in track events or drag racing. Then when you have a few track events under your belt decide if you want to go with drag racing, or track events.

A stock ITR is more than enough for a first time driver, actually probably too much in my opinion (<!~ not like people care)
Maybe spend some of that 10,000 on a driving school!

too many people put $$$ into building these dope *** street/track cars.... And then while they are on a track they are passed by a sohc civic with a competent driver (edit: this was directed at people who build their car and then set out to track events)

well im getting a new engine cause i suck at driving and cant keep up in beginner class, haha
