Mugen gen 1 spoiler / wing - how to tell if it's fake?
i did a search in the archive for both 'mugen spoiler' and 'mugen wing' and i couldnt find any info on how to distinguish a fake from a real...
are there any markings besides the "emblems" which could be replica as well?
thanks...

Re: (Kavehman)
yes there are fakes of the gen one, and the bad part about it is it is pretty dead-on. its not as easy to spot as it is with the gen 2 copies, but they are out there. if im not mistaken, Wings West might have had a replica as they did with the mugen sides, but i cant confirm which companies made replicas.
i too would like to see a side by side comparo, but hopefully others with specific info can chime in.

Wings West made one!!! (called the RS kit including replica mugen skirts and front lip for the 94-97 DC2) The WW wing was an identical replica and very hard to distinguish from the genuine mugen item...if possible at all. There was a thread on here years ago where someone had the full WW kit on their GSR and i had a genuine mugen kit on my Si-VTEC at the time, from the pictures the two kits were identical except my front lip had a mugen badge riveted on it, but that was the sum difference in the two kits.

Re: (mugenracer)
i'll check the wing sitting in my garage to see if i can find any markings when i go home in a day or two for Thanksgiving
however, the only wings west one i could find on their site that looks like the authentic one is one that has a LED http://www.wingswest.com/produ...d=780

so if identical, would both be equally functional? are we talkinga bout jdm bling here?

damn, talk'n bout the first gen...i'm have'n trouble about the second gen..i saw one almost dead on, even with the mugen words on the sides...only way to tell is by the metal bracket used to hold the center piece is a little bit off and the mugen font is slightly off too...but without the real one next to it, it's damn real.

Re: (mugenitrturbo)
im just making sure i dont spend the money on a real part for it to be a fake...that's my main concern...if the ww only comes with an LED then im pretty sure this one is a real deal holyfield...

Yes...the WW wing is identical in height/angle etc etc
My genuine mugen wing didnt have the badges and i picked some up on ebay (fake) and they fitted 100% and the WW wing also has the indentations for the badges in the same location. No one would ever know the difference except you!

the wing in the pic looks to be the real thing.. but even if its not who cares.. looks the same, performs the same, what does the name have anything to do with it.. if a wing has the exact same design then the name stamped on it shouldnt matter..
with certain things the real deal is worth it.. but other things replicas serve the same purpose for a fraction of the price. i am all for replicas as long as its a part that will do the same for my car as the real thing..

It would make a difference if someone was selling a replica wing but stating it was a genuine mugen wing and asking a higher price.

nice timing.. i saw a fake one about a month ago. some fake ones, you just look at the word "Mugen" on the side and its pretty obvious. i saw one on an integra, and when i took a closer look it was obvious. its just all messed up and poor quality, nothing like the pic crxgator posted.

Looks fake to me... look at the second pic... that mugen emblem looks like it doesn't belong there... that "slot" looks too small for that emblem... looks like it was glued on there.

Picture #1: why did he mount the wing to the wrong end of the car ? just kidding.
Picture #2: It also looks fake to me, that badge doesn't look to fit right.

Re: (GO-FIGHT-KILL)
you guys gotta realize that these wings are 10 years old, and the original emblems after so some time deteriorates from the elements or is lost. add that to the fact that if a wing gets resprayed, you wouldnt want to put back the cracking and faded emblems on a fresh coat of paint even though original. the emblems are the wrong way to tell if it is genuine or not because whos to say he didnt put brand-new emblems on my newly sprayed 10-year old wing? im actually talking to a few people right now who own legitimate gen 1 wings and gathering info as to its construction and maybe it will shed some light on this issue.
and just for the record, there WERE replicas produced that were without the LED brake lights on the wing.

from what i've noticed on alot of 1st gen wings....the emblems don't really seem to fit perfect.
like dcash said....real or not..its up to you. i have one, purely for function...shaved emblems on the wing. who cares..my wing

BINGO! i know the emblems on my wing lost almost all the "chrome" and were pretty much black. As far as the fit of those emblems, i know for a fact that the ones for the gen. 1 wings can no longer be purchased brand new (at least through King). I also know that when i put the emblems back on after i resprayed the wing, the type of tape i used made the emblem protrude out similar to the one in the second picture.

The 2nd Gen wings are easier to distinguish (Real to Fake) -- Just look at the center piece... the authentic wing's mid section is flat on top and shaped like the wing of a plane --> Downforce!!
