You can add a lot of oil for a lot less money...

Yep!
But to answer your earlier question, I just had my local dealer do this job.
The re-ring portion is 26 hours at whatever their labor rate is, plus parts.
Parts will vary depending on what you need.
I spent about 2000$ total on parts, but that included new motor mounts, and some unrelated parts, I would guess its about 1500$ in parts for the re-ring alone.
So to get Acura to do it, your cost should be around 4-5000$.

For these prices I would call Len. You can have a brand new bottom end at your door for less, and still be able to sell your old block for $500 plus. I know this may fall under "extensive work" but I feel that the install, price of new block, and the sell of the old block will keep you well below the 4-5k.

Huh? $3K is 600 quarts of Mobil 1, or 2500 quarts of conventional oil.

Sorry about the problems Ash, obviously you know what you need to do now.
About warming your cars up, just letting it go through it's heat cycle naturally is good enough.

Yeah I burn oil like a ****. Since I switched to Castrol it hasn't been so bad, but I still burn more than any other car I own. I've learned to just live with it till I get around to the rebuild.

Re: losing oil like crazy (arren123)
i thought in some cases when you see the black chit on the bumper it was from either not running a cat or running a tad bit on the rich side. reason being i have a JDM motor with less than 18000 kms on it and it gives a little black chit on the bumper but that is when i horse beat the chit out of it. other than that it is very negligible. in fact when i leaned the FP down it was not even evident any more. thats just me .02 cents

This is what I did (except through a personal friend's offer to help). Old block is waiting for surgery.

Re: losing oil like crazy (R-box)
Even though I don't have an R...my stock b16a2 in my Si burns a lot of oil too. About a quart every 500-700 miles if I don't hit VTEC. My compression is good across all 4 cylinders...about 200ish PSI.
I also get black soot all over my back bumper and in the exhaust.
My only guess is that my valve seals are shot...I do keep a quart of oil in my car in case I feel the need to hit VTAKKK

But! - on an otherwise stock car, there is (or will soon be) a significant value in having matching numbers. If I were in this situation I would not consider putting in a new block if I could avoid it. In a few years the value of the car could vary by several thousand dollars on this decision.

Re: losing oil like crazy (Ford Prefect)
Its always the rings. b16a, b18c1, b18c5 doesnt matter. I have re-ringed and rebuilt so many for oil burning. Valve seals will puff on a first startup and neither them or rings will show up as failed from a compression and leakdown test. Honda rings don't last forever, the cyl walls also go out of round on these motors after so many years/heat cycles.

if its dark like black you could be running rich just wasting fuel.
