losing oil like crazy
Ok fellas.. as if I haven't had enough issue with this MF'ing car... I'm not dripping oil, but I am burning it like crazy. I just put almost two quarts into my R. Also on the inside of my exhaust at the end has heavy black soot type stuff (yet another indicator of burning oil).
How do you determine what the cause of this is? (rings? what else could it be?) sorry... i'm not completely motor savy. I am just so upset over this whole car thing, I seriously don't even know what to do anymore. I feel like I am putting so much into this car and not gaining a got damn thing in return
Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated.

Have you done a leakdown and/or compression test on the motor? That would be the first thing I would do.

Welcome to the club Ash, my car does the same thing. It's run looking at the different spatters of black soot behind my car when I start her up in the morning, it's starting to form a piece of art on my garage floor.
Have you run compression/leak down?

the previous owner did but obviously now i dont even trust his numbers. i guess i should get that done first.

my car does this too, but its not oil related. its simply condensation and carbon buildup getting spit out while the hot exhaust gases get pushed through the cold exhaust piping. i get a little puddle of water in the muffler tip. if you drive the car while its doing this, you are going to get those black soot marks on the bumper. after it warms up, it goes away.

I generally wait to drive my car until the pistons stop slapping

How long do you usually wait? Since I dd, sometimes I just don't have time and just get in and go, I was told by the time you get in and back up out of your driveway you should be ok as long as you are babying it

I let my caR warm up for about 5-10 minutes before driving it, but I still get the crap on my bumper. Which leads me to believe it's burning off at WOT at high RPM. It's whatever, it's getting rebuilt here soon anyway.

Its probably piston rings. Mine got to using 1 quart for about 150miles. I just put in new rings and haven't burned a drop in about 300miles. No crazy VTEC exploits yet, but no black soot either.

mine is doing this too. did a compression test, went off the gauge on all 4 cylinders. no blue smoke until i give a massive V-ATTACK, none on startup
just accepted that the oil control rings aren't at their best and will keep putting oil in it until i decide to do a bottom end rebuild

What did you pay for replacing the piston rings and such? Im burning so much oil its not even funny. I think the car needs to be "refreshed" like someone stated earlier. Whats all involved in that? Tia

As everyone has already stated, the first thing that would be logical is do a leak down and compression test. You'll eliminate a lot of options pretty quick with solid results there. If not solid, then please give us feedback to assist you with the next steps you should take.

I had these replaced at an earlier time and it did nothing. The PCV could cause the oil loss in some cases though. After doing these things it was narrowed down to the pistion rings.

In all honesty this seems like a good plan. The work I did is basically to hold it over until I can get a new block, or have the current one built.

just a suggestion, mine will start getting that soot on the back of the car when the weather changes like this. I was told to reset the ecu and see what happens. I did that and the back bumper stopped becoming black. Not sure if it would help or not but its worth a try.

I did that for a couple years. I probably spent close to 3k in oil. Once I got a house with a garage and a daily driver I figured it was time to do the rebuild. Next time remind me not to start working on it in the summer. Lots of down time when it was beautiful outside.
