too bad j00 weren't closer. I'd let j00 borrow mine

MKII = bigger files, but still not sure if quality is any better than my other cams. D2H handling is still way better. So it's a toss up I guess - juju

If only I had more sense than credit Chris.

Yosh, what are the specs on your MKII? Size of CF/SD/MD card? Lenses? Filters? Anything other accessories? I'm drooling over a Bogen/Manfrotto Tripod as we speak. *drools*

From what I've gathered, the MKII is a little bit on the soft size with no PP, but has internal settings to adjust for sharpness. I'm seriously thinking about just getting a 10D with some badass Canon "L" lens. You should take side by side comparisons Yosh!

MKII w/ 300 f/2.8. This is a loaner while my nikons get a little TLC. I'm just using it w/ my Lexar 1GB cards.

Haven't had enough time to really mess w/ the files. Prolly just need more time w/ it, but I remember when I first got the D2H that all of the controls were different from the D100 but was still super easy to use. Not so w/ the MKII. If I can keep the canon longer, i'll do some comparison shots.

Oh, one thing that do really like that's not available on nikon is the RGB histogram

y shi - who can't wait to get his nikons back today!

Hey Len, the April 2004 Popular Photography has a review on the Mark II, definitely looks like an interesting camera. The magazine was still on the newstands this past week when I was at the bookstore.

Actually, it's on their site, check it here: http://www.popphoto.com/articl...d=886

Like I said before, it wouldn't surprise me to see at least one of the winners being someone that nobody expected. I know that I can think of a few people on the board who I am really expecting to throw up something pretty awesome.

I agree that it should be just one class, becuase I am entering at least one pic taken by a simple point and shoot. The judging is based on the picture and its composition, not by its pure quality. I would be pretty upset to hear that my picture didn't win (hypothetically of course) simply becuase it wasn't taken by a better camera.

I'm having some difficulty with the image "washing out" when taking pics of my white ITR in bright sunlight.

I suppose a filter of one type or another would help, but I never got one (will look into the Sony photo catalog to see just what's available for my particular camera).

Darkening the whole image seemed to help, at the expense of the rest of the material in the pic.

Any suggestions wrt the EV setting or otherwise would be appreciated.

Contest submissions are to begin in just a few more days!

Does your camera have some sort of exposure lock? If it does put your car in the center of the pic, lock the exposure and then recompose the shot the way you want. That way it will expose the picture for the white car and not the bright sunlight in the background.

Thanks Chris! Excellent idea.
Because I've been getting a LOT of this:

Only the front right of the hood is a little vague in this one ... maybe some of the front.
It was a very humid day in/around Albany NY.

does you cam have a spot meter?

If so, put your camera in manual or AP (aperture priority). Take a reading off the brightest section of your car. What the camera will try to do is to make that portion a neutral gray, causing your pic to be underexposed. So to compensate, give it a +.7 ~1.5 EV. This will brighten up the pic. How much compensation depends on the scene, so that just takes practice.

If your camera has a histogram, you can "chimp" your way to proper exposure Take a photo, check the histogram. By looking at it, you can tell if you should increase or decrease the exposure.

Here is the shooting data (exif) I got from your photo.

seeing the 1/1000 shutter speed for f/8.0, tells me it was a bright and sunny day. Two things I would suggest, but not sure if these are adjustable on your camera though. First is a lower ISO; 200 or even 100 if you can. Second is to use custom white balance. The histograph shows me that your green & blue levels are much higher than the reds. Setting it to sunny or even cloudy mode would help prevent the green/blue cast.

Damn man, you'd better hurry.

Zyg - What I would do is just take multiple shots of the same thing. Using Yoshi's method, just take the same picture, using varying apertures and EV settings. Just slowly decrease the EV and check out the differences that you get. I am sure that once you do it a few times, that you will be able to find a good pattern of exposure that works in the conditions that you are currently in. I know that I took probably about 40 indivudual shots of each setup that I used, changing small settings to try and get the perfect level of exposure. Like Yoshi said, if you have the light, lower your ISO level as low as you can so that you are getting the best possible exposure, it gives you a lot more room with the exposure to work with by turning the sensitivity of the camera down.

Hope that helps...

it's okay to take pics on a cloudy day. the light is usually less harsh and more forgiving: check out this pic I took of an RSX. as you can tell from the background it was cloudy
