Insurance battle, need reinforcements
So my car was stolen and recovered stripped a couple weeks ago and now I'm fighting to get a fair settlement from my insurance company. The insurance guy called me on Monday telling me that they got a market value of $6,644.00 for my R. I now need to find a private appraiser to get a better value of my car. I'm having a hard time trying to find one that will be knowledgable when it comes to the R. Does anyone know of anyone that I can contact and use to help me out?

do they realize the car is limited production? do they know it was voted the best FWD car in history and one of the best drivers cars ever by EVO magazine?
search around we have had a few threads like this before.

Ask them to find another ITR like yours for sale for the same price. Search around, print out online ads of other cars for sale to give them an idea of what they go for.

Re: Insurance battle, need reinforcements (JjuuN R)
Typical insurance company B.S. I had a similar problem (it doesn't have leather seats or a sun roof? No cruise control???). They do not have a Type R in their books. They do not know nor do they appreciate what you had. Solely number crunchers. They probably have GSR's in their books and think your's is worth less.
Print out the webpages thay show the difference between your car and other Integra's.
Find ads, preferably with those located close to you, and ask them to replace your car with one similar. Bradstard nailed it right on the head. Bitch and fight, but be polite and confident. They will go up just to make you go away.
Good luck,
John

Yeah... fight this. If you can afford it, don't settle with them yet. They are at your mercy until you close the case.
I had a friend with a 95 Integra GS-R that they wanted to stiff him on. They eventually gave him $10k for the car because he complained so much. And they let him take his "performance" parts off the car. When they got it back, there was a shell and a Civic DX engine in the trunk. But the point is, he had another car on standby, so he could drag it out.
They might think they have the advantage because you need a car to get to work. If you have other means of transport, take it.

I've heard of this line working a few times! Tell them you don't want a cash settlement, but that they need to purchase a near exact replacement. Kidding.

I was lowballed on mine and took printouts from Autotrader showing what they were being sold for and they gave me $19,500 and that was 3.5 years ago.

I believe that this may actually be in some policies or a legal requirement in some states to prevent low-balling by the darkside insurance companies.

Re: Insurance battle, need reinforcements (Racebrewer)
They actually compared my car to two gsr's in the "market area". I think it's pretty ridiculous. After I argued with the guy over the phone when he told me what the market value that they came up with was, I got this email.
"Pursuant to our conversation today, September 25, 2007, please be advised that Esurance Insurance Company has invoked the “appraisal clause” in your policy in an attempt to settle the total loss of your 1998 Acura Integra Type-R. We have sent an appraiser to inspect your vehicle and establish a value. Please contact your own licensed, certified automobile appraiser to represent your interests in this matter. No adjustments will be made to the current value of your vehicle if you fail to comply and we will stand on our value of $6,644.00"
I tried to call today to talk to the guy and say that the original value is not a fair value because it wasn't even determined with comparisons of the same model/trim. Unfortunately I got a voice mail, must have been on lunch, and I got caught up with work and forgot to call back. I'm definitely going to be calling him tomorrow.
Thanks for all your help guys. If you find out or hear or know of anyone that can help me in this battle to appraise the car, please let me know.

thats BS. how can they compare an ITR value to a GSR? granted they are both Integras and similar cars, but their values are not the same and shouldnt be compared for these purposes. Ask them if they would appraise a totalled Z06 based on the value of a base model Corvette. It makes no sense and they are just trying to push you to see if you give in. Print out some autotraders and for sale posts here and stand up to these fucktards.

dude, you gotta play hardball with those bastards. I recently totaled my '93 EX coupe, and they (USAA) gave me 6500, and keep the car.
There is NO WAY that is a fair value for an R. (this has me so worried about my own R now. Does anyone else worry about what will happen with insurance if anything happens to your R?)

The first question I asked my insurance company was the process if my car were totalled or stolen. They said to keep printing out ads of cars similir to mine and when the time come I could provide proof for the going rate.

Based on this response, I would find listings of ITRs similar to yours for sale, and share them with THEIR appraiser. I would also find your own appraiser and share them with HIM/HER. You may need to explain to both of them that your ITR is a limited-production model (3700 sold) and is not similar in market value to a GS-R. Any halfway-competent appraiser should understand the issue.
A web search shows that there is an International Automotive Appraisers Association and you can find one near you on their website. This is probably going to cost you some money. Ask your crappy insurance company if they will reimburse you for the cost. And after you've settled, you may want to consider shopping around to switch your insurance to a better insurance company, one that won't jack you around like this. You can find ratings of auto insurance companies here.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

Re: (Dave_B)
Ok, after arguing with the guy he spoke with his manager and they said
"I spoke with my manager and was advised we could settle for the NADA retail value of $8,525.00 and you would not have to hire an independent appraiser. Would this amount be acceptable to you? If not then we will need an appraisal from an appraiser of your choice. Please let me know. Thanks."
I think I'm still going to go with my own appraiser. What do you guys think?
