Bringing my R to Cali
Guys... Not sure if many of you remember me, it's been a very long time since my last post.
I'm working now in Cali and want to bring my heavily modified R from Canada. Getting through emissions is simply not possible with the current setup; however, I'm wondering what my options might be.
Currently the engine is a heavily modified B18 with S2 Pro2 cams, higher compression pistons, big exhaust, running with Hondata ECU... you get the idea.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Cheers,
Doug

Re: Bringing my R to Cali
run it as non-op and trailer it to whatever you track you want to drive it on
register it/keep it registered in your previous location
find someone to do an illegal smog (good luck)

Re: Bringing my R to Cali
If I go that route, what are my aftermarket options. Can I legally run different internals and simply use K-Pro to tune? Is K-Pro even an option in Cali?
Would the swap need to be done in Cali or can I get it done in Canada first before bringing the car down?
Any input on these questions would be great.
Thanks,
Doug

Re: Bringing my R to Cali
if you want to "legally" bring your R into Cali and register it to drive it on road, it needs to be a 97/98 or 00/01, and importation is not too difficult. To a certain degree, it is probably easier to pay the money for someone to pass smog for you than swapping out everything you have. Of course there are a lot of people here in Cali that are able to get their "non US compliant" Rs registered, but that's a different story.
Thanks,
Doug

No idea about following the rules but it is possible to have a k20 swap and be smog legal.
This guy did it any might be able to help you once you get to that stage.

Yeah, I've been there. Rode the PC1 and other hot spots.
Can not see myself wanting to be part of the socialist experiment for any reason.
Like someone here said, can't you just keep it registered in Canada and drive it in cali?

Re: Bringing my R to Cali
Hey Doug! I certainly remember you and the R. Welcome back to the boards.
I can't speak on Cali rules but like others have mentioned, it's pretty strict. There are a number of people I know who have BC plated vehicles in the Coachella valley area as they are snow birds(6 months here, 6 months there). And they haven't had any issues whatsoever, even during a claims process. It is quite the grey area though and there is a level of "chance" you are taking especially with such a modified car. Not sure how that translates to ON as that province has private insurers to offer so I guess it would depend on their policy. I would investigate that angle first before planning a K20 swap. You may be able to sneak through a loophole somehow.
Good luck!

Re: Bringing my R to Cali
Having live here most of my life and having the chance to travel all over U.S.A, I can tell you that this is THE place to live no matter how you look at it. To the op, follow "white rocket" suggestion and I think you will figure out a way. GL

To each, His own. I have traveled all over the US and lived in major cities. Grew up in Philla and can not imagine how people actually enjoy living that close to one another. Crime, attitude, traffic, taxes ordinances.
I absolutely fell in love with the Ozarks here in the Mid West.
You can drive your car ANY way you want. So little law enforcement here it's mind blowing.
You can build your car ANY way you want. The sickest rides I have ever seen here.
You can live the way you want when you have property like here. 20 acres gives you a shooting range, gardens, lake, 4 wheeler trails, bon fires, LOUD party rights and I forgot to mention...year round firework privileges.
So before anyone gets into a pissing contest about the best place to live; I can name 100 things you can't do there. Can you even get your car into 4th gear during the day?

Re: Bringing my R to Cali
I live in SOCAL and spent a lot of time and effort smogging my integra. You can do a k swap legally but you have to change out your dash and cluster as well as engine/tranny etc. then have it inspected and certified. Really a lot of work.
CA will not allow any modifications to intake/exhaust/ecu that aren't CARB certified.
In LA there are places you can get it done under the table. Not sure about NorCal.
Since your bringing an out of state car it most likely will require a STAR SMOG certification which is a really thourough inspection of equipment and emissions.
One warning is if you attract police they can impound and confiscate your vehicle if it is deemed to have untraceable or illegal equipment.

Re: Bringing my R to Cali
Thanks for the input. Mine is a 98 and I'm happy to find what ever route gets me driving it on the road. I'm not well connected in Cali for getting smog done, but have jumped through hoops in Canada to get mine on the road. If you can point me in any directions I'm all ears. IM me if you'd like.
Thanks,
Doug

its a pain in the ***, your best bet, like someone else said, don't register the car in the states. drive it around with your Canada plates. CA dmv will need vin verification performed by chp (California highway patrol), at that point when your hood is open chp will see your bolt on upgrades. If you where coming to socal I would be able to help you out. but norcal I have no contacts. now for the k20 swap, youll have to install all emissions components from donor vehicle (rsx type s) the hardest one is the sensor in the gas tank. and ecu must be completely stock.
