Icon6 Best cam for stock jdm ITR motor

Im sure this topic has been touched before.. I made 195whp and 130tq with a 97 jdm itr motor with hytech header, 2.5" exhaust, testpipe, cheap intake. Chrome tuned. Car runs very strong and Im not sure if I should try for cams... What is the most aggressive cam that the ITR bottom end can handle? I so happen to have sk2 tuner springs and ti retainers stored away in case i needed to upgrade.. Any advice would be appreciated.

The best cam for it is probably the stock JDM ITR cams.

i dont think anyones hating. i think most ITR guys would prefer to keep ITR specific threads in the ITR section.

i agree, stock is not a bad choice.

As mentioned above, stick with the stock ITR cams. Toda "VTEC Killer" Cams are pretty crazy--but they cost around $1,000.00...

He probably figured people in here know the motor the best, and could give him the answer he is looking for.

I noticed I literally got no real answer here... If you know engines it does not matter if its an B18C1 B18C5 B16A etcccc.. Im asking for what can be used optimally all around to gain the most power on the street with the stock internals with a JDM 11.1:1 bottom end... I had Mustangs before and I knew what cam I could use on a 302 effectively on a stock bottom end. Obviously you are going to hurt performance going to big cause the motor cant use it. If the cam is made to make power at 9k its obviously not gonna happen on a car that can only rev to 7k... IMO not knowing much about what the Honda can handle cam wise I would say something a little more aggressive would be ok.. VTEC killer cams would just be dumb unless i am building a car for the track. Thanks anyway.

Is there any point in upgrading cams if you don't have much else done? What other mods do you have done?

I have every bolt on possible. Stock cams are made for stock parts. stock exhaust etc.. everything was matched from the factory. So now what. stock engine prob only made 170whp mine make 197whp with it tuned. What do we do now to make maybe 210whp?

The first issue you will have breaking the 200WHP barrier are the stock injectors. if you are at 197 right now, they are well beyond their 240cc 80% efficiency rating. you will need to either upgrade to Prelude Injectors (290cc) or go to 310 cc injectors. Add in a fuel pump at 190LPH and you can consider the engine safe from death via fuel starvation.

Toda A's or Jun 1 Cams might get you to where you want to be on the stock valve train, they are hard to find, but are out there. As far as Skunk2 valvetrain components being crap comments, they are actually manufactured by Supertech, so I would have to say that they are great springs and retainers. Adding the springs and retainers in, you open the door to a whole slew of more aggressive cam options, once again, limited by your fueling upgrade needs.

What intake system are you currently running? You said "cheap intake" which leads me to believe there is some available horsepower there also. Whale *****, Moogen, others out there can find a few HP, especially a Mugen.

STOCK!!! I don't see the point of a more aggressive cams if your motor is stock! Plus the cams on your motor are already good enough.....

His setup is already not stock, he has a great header which has PLENTY of headroom with better cams and fuel, upgraded exhaust and intake.

Not to mention his compression is better than the USDM version of the same motor, which will defiantly benefit from a longer duration cam.

S2 stage 1 if you plan on running a stock ecu. but at that price you might as well make it worth the while by getting it tuned, and therefore you can step up to a stage 2 or a pro1 cam. So basically use stock cams with stock ecu. any thing up to Pro1 with tuned ecu. The Pro1 is a bit agressive on the pri/sec lobes for street car but i have the Pro2's and love them. That is on a stock P72(GSR) block and a valve train upgrade, the car is still streetable to me.

Do you mean "STOCK" as in parts or "STOCK" as in built??? Cause I mean as in Built just because he has "headers" and ohyeah a CHEAP @SS intake (no offence to the OP) but does mean he's still stock! What I meant is that, his motor isn't "built internaly" so the cams that he has should be good enough to make the power all around. YES you can buy stage 1,2,3 but WHY. ITS NOT BUILT!!! Waste of $$$. Im sure with a more aggressive cam on a STOCK HEAD might lead to a bent valve or worse. I think that with the amount of $$ he's going to spend on new cams just to get a few more ponys can go some where else n yes I am aware that jdm motor comes with a slightly higher compression. That's the only reason why his making those numbers and its not cause of the intake..haha

Thats why they make different size cams. Its like saying you cant safely boost the car with stock internals.. I know guys putting 300whp with a stock gsr and still running mint. Obviously your not gonna run 40lbs of boost through it. Would it be better if it was built? yes. Can you still make good power on a stock internal motor without blowing it up? yes. putting a cam in that will make the car rev to 10k on a stock bottom end would not be the best idea either.

He doesn't have "headers", its not a V8. He has the best header made for the C5 motor next to a long Tube SMSP IMHO (and that was a HUGE debate back in the day before Hytech went to china). The header would be the main reason he is making the numbers he is, and adding a nice longer duration set of cams, some better headroom injectors and some tuning will most likely get him to his goal without doing a full 'Build'. Somewhere in the 1000$ range for all of those items.
Granted if he has another 1500$ to spend on top of the cams cash, getting a nice stage 1 or 2 head port from Endyne or another decent shop would really get some results, but again that is getting into the 'built' motor world.

And really, you are SURE that a little more aggressive cam on a stock Type r valve train will bend valves? ****, alert the media and the whole type r community, we have a major situation on our hands.

There are plenty of dyno runs on this very site which show yields of 10-15HP using just intakes, be it the BPI velocity stack setup or Mugen, which was why I suggested those upgrades over his self proclaimed crappy intake.

So maybe make a suggestion as to where he should spend all that cam money. you said "somewhere else", so where?

The OP asked for some suggestion to get him to his goal utilizing Cam upgrades with opinions. I am giving him suggestions from my EXPERIENCE owning 2 Type Rs over the last 10 years and some 15 Honda products over the last 25 years.
I have not once told him he is stupid or implied he is wasting his time and money on worthless upgrades. I feel, and it is backed up by plenty of data, that there are MANY upgrades you can do to a stock r motor and achieve some pretty reasonable gains with little or no decrease in reliability. Call me crazy, but that has been my experience.
