Default Bad News: Need new tranny.

UPDATE: I just got word from my friend who works at Hondamotive. He told me that the mechanic that worked on my car told him that he wanted the tranny for himself. Three other mechanics (including the best tranny guy up there) told my friend that the car DID need a new tranny but that the LSD WOULD go in another tranny NO problem and that it was salvagable. The mechanic that did my tranny swap told me it was trashed and that he did not trust it in another tranny. He convinced me to let him give it to a guy who picks up their junk parts. Of course after I read that some people on here would give me money for it I told him not to and that my friend would bring it to me. I didnt know the mechanic LIED to me and wanted it for himself until my friend just brought it to me 10min ago. So in conclusion I spent $2,800 on a new tranny and got lied to and told that there would be no salvagable parts in the old tranny.

Thanks for the offers on the old tranny because if otherwise the dumbass mechanic would have a good ITR LSD for free. Rest assured. The old tranny is at my house and the LSD is going in my brothers GSR so I regretfully announce that the tranny is no longer for sale

The Story
I dropped my car off at the shop and they give me a call today saying my tranny is gone. I took it in there initially because the tranny was making a chattering noise when at idle. Also when I come to a stop you can hear something spinning to a stop (meaning a shaft in the tranny) as explained by the mechanic. Plus when you downshift the cattering noise gets louder and you can feel something sloppy in the transmission from the shifter.

Another thing is that the third gear syncro is pretty bad also. When you upshift into 3rd it grinds pretty bad about above 4000rpm. Does anyone think this sounds right to you guys? It is a 2001 ITR with about 75,000 miles on it and is on its 3rd clutch.
Any info would be appreciated.

What EXACTLY did the mechanic say was wrong (as in parts). The noise could just be a bad bearing and syncros are from from a dead tranny.

He didnt say EXACTLY what was wrong he just said I needed a new tranny. He said that they have seen a few R's with the same problem doing the same things. The shops name is Hondamotive in Ft. Worth, TX. The owner (steve) had a 98 R with a JRSC and he had to replace his too. Also there is another customer with a 98 Type R that is on his 4th tranny. I am just hoping that that is the problem. Ever since the chattering started it has constantly had a whinning noise to it. I just dont want to spend money on something if I dont have to especially $2,700 dollers worth parts/labor. Have any of you guys had experience with Hondamotive?

They should at least tell you what is wrong with it. Hell, if I just had 2nd gear synchro problem I could just replace the entire tranny and fix it right? It's a little extreme but you get the idea. Take it to a new place and get a second opinion.

not to sound demeaning (its hard to tell online sometimes) but are you sure it wasnt the throwout bearing wasnt shot and thats it? when you were at a stop and hold the clutch in would the weird noise go away or keep going?

Well, I called them today to see what was exactly wrong with the tranny. They said the 3rd gear syncro was trashed, the main shaft bearings were bad because when he took the tranny out and spun the shaft with his hands you could hear little peices inside the tranny. He also said that when he drained the tranny fluid there was metal shavings in the oil. So there was metal shavings in the differential. He said that there was a couple of flywheel bolts missing also. Keep in mind that I had a friend put my clutch in about 15,000 miles ago and failed to mention that to me. I dont know it could be rebuilt but they said it would cost almost as much as a tranny so I decided to just replace it. I got the car with 47,000 miles on it and it already had an aftermarket clutch in it when I got it so ther is no telling what the previous owner did to this thing. When we replaced that clucth we did find that it was missing a couple of bolts in the housing. I had to spend my savings on this but I thing in the long run it will be better for me. Any comments are welcome.

uhmm how much do you want for the old tranny if you already bought a new one?

those are some issues, but some of the parts are usable I'm sure.

yep, bolts on flywheel + shaft + 1 syncro = not a good enough reason for me to replace it

the 2700 dollars or so for the work...why are they charging you so much?

HONDAMOTIVE

THEY ARE HONEST AND I TRUST THEM. STEVE IS A TERRIFIC GUY AND HAS GONE OUT OF HIS WAY TO HELP ME.

SOUNDS LIKE A FEW TRANSMISSIONS I HEARD OF. START CHANGING YOUR TRANSMISSION FLUID EVERY OTHER OIL CHANGE. SERIOUS. I HAVE AND HAVEN'T HAD ANY PROBLEMS YET.

Errr...I don't mean to rub it in your face, but I had a problem with my transmission. It grinded every now and then and sometimes would not go into gear no matter how far the clutch was depressed.

So I took it to work and drove it into service and I got a new transmission.

Like *** Nickel always said, "now it shifts like butta."

Take it into the dealership they might give you "Goodwill" warranty depending on your condition and attitude.
