Back from the Dyno/Tuning - Results Inside...
What a day. I set out from Austin at 7:00am this morning for the 3 hour drive to Houston (don't ask, there are no shops in Austin I am comfortable with) to get a VAFC installed and to do some cam gear/VAFC tuning on the Dyno. I arrived at CarBoy at 10:15 and the installed the VAFC with no problem and we strapped the R to the dyno.
My mods are as follows:
TODA spec A cams
TODA Cam Gears
TODA Valve springs
J's Racing Intake
Spoon 4-2-1 Header
Carsound Cat
Fujitsubo RM-01A cat-back
TODA flywheel
First thing I noticed is my car is louder than I thought.
First run put down 165.7hp and 111.4 torque. After tuning cam gears and the VAFC they were able to get 176.3 and 121.5. VTEC was set to 5400. Chart is below.
The car feels fanatastic really - I can really feel the difference in the power delivery. The jump in torque feels great. Car runs smooth.
There was one issue. After the tuning was complete the car threw a check engine light while still at the shop - they read the code and it was running too rich according to the computer. The tuner retarded a cam gear just a bit to fix the problem. It seemed fine and light didn't come back on.
However, about 3/4 of the way home to Austin the check engine light comes on again and the car will not rev over 6,000. I cleared the code when I got home and am driving around trying to get it to throw the code again (it hasn't) so I can see at what RPM it is happening and back some fuel out at that point using the VAFC - hoping this helps.
Overall, I am very, very happy with how the car feels. I guess I was expected maybe a bit more power, but I didn't have a number in my head. Feedback and opinions always welcome...

Glad that you are happy with it, the numbers are nice. It feels good to get the car tuned and feel the difference the tuning made.
From what I can see there may be some more power at the top as your graph stops at 8000 but its still climbing. I know that my B's made power to 8600rpm. It looks a little on the lean side around 6000-6500. That could come down a bit.
Overall nice setup and nice numbers, enjoy.

A couple of comments...
you're running scary lean, it'll be much worse on the street, you'll have more air flow through the system I would be very afraid at running ~15:1 A/F ratio.
they didn't pull to redline, some shops just go until they hit the rev limiter the first time, then they know where the tacometer reads.
Your CEL is most likely from not installing 1 wire...if I recall correctly there was a wire that was initially thought that it wasn't needed, however it is needed

i definitley agree, i posted 170.0 at the wheels with skunk2 stage ones. it was also a hundred degrees outside with high levels of humidity, didn't do a tune up or oil change before the dyno and.....yea thats it. oh yeah, i just put ctr cams in with the stock cam pulleys, rips way harder imo. smoother powere band also

Thanks for the heads up Austin... and I thought I was running rich. (I'm still trying to learn how to read and interpret these graphs). So, reading the chart - how can you tell that I am running scary lean?
So there is no way to remedy the situation with my current set-up?
I guess I'll be going to another tuner to get this fixed...

it might be best to look into another tune. 15 a/f isn't what you want and it will run leaner as temps drop.. i'd suggest hondata or someting - it will also allow control over timing and just bunch of other features. i've had great experience with that for couple years now.. from stage 2 to s200b. it suits great for daily driving.

I'm sure Hondata is great - but is there no way to get this thing tuned/running properly/optimally with the VAFC? The last thing I want is to have spent $$ and time today only to learn I need to spend more $$$...

theres definately a way to fix and improve your situation and keep vafc. since tons of people run on vafc all day long.
either way, i wouldn't push it with your current tune

I said I don't want a title!
Re: Back from the Dyno/Tuning - Results Inside... (Flux)
Double-check the vafc wires. I kept getting a CEL only to find out the source of my problem was a vafc connection/crimp.
I just soldered everything in and I have had zero problems since then.

it's hard to compare numbers from dyno to dyno. my car just pulled out 170whp with just a toda header and vafc on a dyna pack dyno (supposedly reads lower than most dynos). i gots the good motor (it just eats spark plugs)!

Jonathan, is that a Dynojet dyno?
As far as VAFC tuning goes, Mike K and Yack seem to do pretty well with them.

Yes, it was on a Dynojet. The running lean has me a bit confused - first, why would the guy tuning my car tune it to a point that it was so lean it is not wise to drive it, and second, if I am running lean why am I getting a too rich CEL code and have black on the back of my bumper?
Either way, I'm going to be going to a new tuner next week I hope to get this worked out and get some better numbers... what a pain in the ***.

maybe the wideband was not working right or something. Fact of the matter is you are running way too lean. My friends a/f looked like that, and he gained about 15whp from just adding fuel.
