Default AutoX, Drag Racing....How About A Hillclimb?

Special thanks to Robert Williams for capturing this video of mine and storing it. This was taken during the last running of The Chimney Rock Hillclimb in 1995. No ABS and bad synchros abound. I hope you enjoy. My friend Ed Petty and I were fortunate to be able to compete in this event before it was retired after 50 events. It took place in the beautiful Chimney Rock Park in NC. The old saying of, "Nothing could be finer then being in Carolina" rings true in the NC mountains.

You will need Windows Media player to see this, it is 10mb.

Does anyone remember the article in SCC about some kid from Florida with a Type-R and he raced it on Pike's Peak? Not sure if I have the article still laying around. I believe his only mod was to take out his radio (although he may have had a JRSC, but I can't remember).

The cool thing about that "kid" from Florida is that he drove his car from Florida to Colorado, raced and drove home !!! He only had some support from local Acura dealers. I drove up Pikes Peak (about 1/2 up) this past winter and it was soooooooooooooo much fun. If u are ever in the Denver/Colorado Springs area, Pikes Peak is a must see. What I did, was get out there early early morning, so I had the road to myself and I could drive up as fast as I wanted to. But, be careful, there are Park Police. Unfortunately, I only had a rental, but at least it was a Nissan Maxima (surprisingly nice car).

That video was awesome! Was that in a stock Type-R? I didn't know the R had enough torque to go up hills

ITR? No

Its a 1986 Civic 4 Door and, at the time, was set up for GT4 Solo I in SCCA. It's now strictly a road race car.

Smsp,

How were u able to modify your setup to accept carbs? I have heard a great deal of autocrossers switching to carb setups or somehow modifying carbs to an ITB setup for b series motors. I am not to familiar with running carbs or ITB's, is there any specific information out there that would provide some details?

Are the Carb setups all custom modified or is there some sort of adapter plate available for a b series motor to accept carbs? Are they hard to tune, or can then be ran without tuning and still yield impressive performance gains??

Thanks for any information you could provide me

When I ran the Mikuni's I used a Mikuni intake manifold and that cracked in about 6 years so I went with the TWM unit, which is a very well built piece. The TWM unit is set up to receive ITBs or twin side draft carbs. TWM does have intakes for most if not all the B16's and B18's, and also D15s and D16s. I plan to try to offer these pieces in the near future.
http://www.twminduction.com/Catalogs/Catalogs-FR.html

As for tuning the carbs, I have no experience with the ITBs, I've found the Webers to be easier than the Mikunis. I've use a vacuum gauge to sychronize the 2 carbs which seems to work well. I also used a flow gauge that fits on the velocity stack and you can compared flow between cylinders. To get the correct jetting I use an EGT, but I think I will go to a dual set up inthe future. I plan to get the MSD knock sensor since it is impossible to hear any kind of a knock over the sound of the intake and exhaust, plus there can be detonation that the human ear can't pickup and you could be doing damage and not know it until it's too late. This happened to me at Charlotte Motor Speedway a couple of years ago and I fried the #3 JE piston. I do know now that I will never install a piston with sharp machined edges ever again. I haven't tried an O2 sensor yet, mainly because I run leaded race fuel, but I guess I could try to with some high octance unleaded fuel and then would just have to compare the EGTs when I went back to leaded fuel. I hope this helps.
