Transmission whine...need some help.
A few weeks ago I had a horrible missed shift, and my trans started whining pretty bad. I pulled it out and had my friend who works on trannys inspect it and he ended up replacing all the bearings, and I decided to Have him put in some carbon synchros while it was open. He said mechanicly everything else looked great. Well, the trans is back in and the whine is A LOT better, but I can still hear some whining. I'm not sure what else it could be if the gears are all good and all the bearings are new? Any suggestions on what to try? I'm using regular honda mtf, maybe royal purple or synchromesh to quite it down? Could the actual input shaft be damaged? It was a 3 to 2 shift at 8k rpms, real bad. Seems to shift excellant right now though, and all is good except for the whine.

i know this might be silly but did he change the input shaft? and yes did he hit it with a hammer cuz that could have killed the bearing during the install. i changed all of mine as well and i have over 200k of abuse and its quite as can be. does the sound go away when you press the clutch? does it come back when you let go? does it wine more as you rev? or drive fast. As to your question yes the input shaft could be damaged but i really doubt it because it would be alot louder if that was the case and you would deff feel it in the shifts. easiest thing you can do is use hondas new mtf witch i like or gm synchromesh. not for nothing how many miles did you put on it so far after rebuild you have to break in the new bearings and change the fluid anyways after a rebuild so it will be a lil whiny. i think you have nothing to worry about it.

Re: Transmission whine...need some help.
No, I didn't replace either bearing. I doubt the TOB would have anything to do with the sound of the trans while in gear. The TOB only does something when the clutch is depressed. The pilot bearing I don't know about though. I thought that when the Pilot bearing starts going bad shifting gets hard and such, but shifting is just fine. Another thing that leads me away from a pilot bearing is that when I let off the throttle and leave the car in gear, the sound goes away. I would "think" that it would still make the sound if it was the pilot bearing. Anyone else know for sure?

sounds like a diff bearing ... Let off and it goes away. Get on it and it comes back .. Cant remember if thats a pinion bearing issue or carrier bearing. Should be the same idea as with rear wheel drive but intergrated ....
