Default state ref ticket!!...searched..no clear answer...look inside

--i have searched but no one has answered the question im looking for--

so i get popped for doing 60 on a 45 downhill ..cops says pop ur hood and sees my apexi intake (not carb legal) he asks if i have the sticker, i say no..he says i cant have that...i have RS*R jdm b16 headers ("jasma")..says i cant have that cuz no carb #...says my espelier exhaust is too loud...so he basically gets me for speeding, modified exhaust and altered emissions and that i must go to the state ref cuz my car is not "safe" for public roads..wtf!!

i searched and most people who got ref tickets have swaps (doesnt apply to me)..n most people say that u must put it back to stock b4 you take it in order to pass

my question is..if i put it back to stock and get bar'd will i be able to modify it again and not get hassled cuz i have a bar'd sticker?..or do i have to leave on the mods n take it to see if it passes

also..if u do get a bar sticker, do u have to get a new one everytime u add something?

thanks for the input

For the Exhaust question, here's a quote about the DB limit:

"California law requires that all vehicles must be equipped with an adequate muffler to prevent excessive noise from the exhaust system. It also prohibits the operation of a passenger vehicle (other than a motorcycle), or a truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 6,000 pounds, that has an exhaust noise level greater than 95 decibels, when tested under specified conditions."

So looks like that's the limit, 95 DB.

As for the ref ticket, yes you can revert back to stock to pass the ref. As for putting everything back in afterwards, and not being hit with a ref ticket again, it's my understanding that if a cop does pop your hood, and see's all the "illegal" parts, then they can hit you with another ref ticket. Again, this is from what I understand, if anyone has a definite answer, then please feel free to correct me.

I know it sucks, but it's just what we get for living in the wonderful state of California.

you have two options, take off intake, header and exhaust, take it to ref, any parts u have on must have carb #'s for your car other wise it has to be stock, or just wait for the ticket to come in the mail and just pay it.

either way if you put your parts back on and get pulled over again they can pop your hood and cite your for any violations. I know ppl who have been cited 3 or 4 times for the same thing and they just pay the ticket every time

The ref will only accept OEM parts or parts with CARB numbers. If not, then you automatically fail the visual and have to come back.
If the motor in your car is the stock motor, then you do not have to get BAR'd. Passing BAR is for people with swaps.
After you pass the ref, you can put your aftermarket parts back on. But if you get caught with another emissions violation again within 3 years, the severity of the ticket increases. Probably resulting in a larger fine than the first time.
And of course you can just pay the ticket when it comes in the mail.

When i was sent to the ref for having an adjustable FPR, the fine on the ticket was $300 if i wanted to avoid the ref. No way I was gonna pay that when it takes 30 seconds to swap on the stock one. So you may want to see if its cheaper/better/easier to pay the fine, or convert back to stock. Im not sure if the Ref charged me for a smog check as well.

The red will not be giving you a sticker for your door or any sticker in fact.
Skip ref and pay the big fine around $200-300,.
or convert to stock, get ref'd, pay the court fee $10.

also do u guys think that i my "jasma" headers will pass visual and or smog test since they were stock to a similar engine at one point?

as far as internal mods, well the cops or the ref cannot see those, so unles you tell them about it then no one will know.
BUT, keep in mind, the ref or any smog check station will put your car on a load and sniff the exhaust, so internal mods only go so far till you start affecting tail pipe emissions, after that you will fail still.

$30 for the inspection, but if you failed the 1st time, second inspection was free.

The only way I know of to legally get away without smog, is to have family/someone you know that lives out of state, and register your car in that state which doesn't have smog laws.

As for the carb legality, I'm not too sure on that.

That won't be any help, even if the car is registered in another state w/o smog inspections, he's still driving it here in CA. If he gets pulled over here in CA he has to abide by CA rules and he will still get a ticket for modified emissions. Haven't you seen the numerous threads of people from out of state getting tickets for their car's exhaust, turbos, etc. here in CA while on vacation?

Some aftermarket cams will pass smog. But if ita anything past a stage 1, then i wouldnt even try. Your Jasma headers will not pass. You're only options are: if it does not have a carb number, swap on the stock part or pay the fine if its too much work like an entire motor swap. Simple things such as intake, header, and exhaust can be swapped out in about an hour.

Yeah, I've heard of that happening to people. It's kind of retarded the rules would still apply, seeing how if you're only down here for 2 days to visit friends/and such, they expect you to convert to CA standards.
