When you guys installed the short air intake did you have to do anything with the car's computer to reconfigure the different air flow from stock?

I notice no difference im mpg since I switched over from stock intake to short ram AEM intake. I highly recomend the though they are cheap and give you decent HP for the money.

build a wai ...yes warm air intake. warn air into the intake gives you more mpgs but less power. search it. a guy done it on a DC.

I was looking for a Cold Air system for my '05 Civic Hybrid but ended up getting a K&N. Seems to work good. Couldn't find a Cold Air for a manual trans but they make one for a auto. Who knew?

Yes, because with colder air, the throttle plate stays more closed more of the time, increasing pumping losses (heat creation instead of work done).
But Valvetronic/Valvematic and if Honda ever does it, AVTEC stops using the throttleplate so then with those valvetrains, having a warm air intake won't help mpg at all, it'll just hurt max power.

From a mechanic who I asked this same question he said its pretty obvious. A intake will suck up more air so engine uses more fuel which means worst mpg. Burning up more fuel. Which makes sense when u think about it lol. Sensors sense more air. Adjust with more fuel. So more fuel used equals less mpg lol. Figure car makers would but having intakes in cars by now if it really increased mpg. Since its all about the mpg now adays lol so I think it's safe to say it won't help improve mpg just slightly hurt it. Unless u have a really dirty air filter that does affect it. Personally a good flowing drop in is best for improved throttle response and little to no affect on mpg

You guys are on the track. You have the right theory, but the wrong conclusion. More air flow does mean more fuel and more power, but it also means that the motor doesn't have to work as hard to produce the same power levels, and accelerate at the same rate. If driven at wot all the time, yes it will use slightly more fuel. But if you're doing a back to back comparison of the two with identical driving habits, it will use less fuel. The same principals as making your car more fuel efficient by turboing it. Less throttle position is required to produce the same air flow, therefore, less fuel is used.

It's not exactly a big secret that your car will get worse gas mileage in cold weather, and better mileage in warm weather.

Carriage bolt through floor board/gas pedal for 3/4 throttle max= good gas mileage- and less tickets...its too hard not to use it when I know its there.

I was wondering when someone would get around to this. :-) People are forgetting that the computer is constantly sensing not only mixture but power needs and balances the mix accordingly. If this weren't the case, you'd be dumping raw fuel into the engine on any downhill or decel.

You use the A/C in the summer and not in the winter so of course you'll get worse mileage. Duh! :-)

Damm I have virtually the same mods and only get about 26-28 hwy.i also have a b16 trans though.

Now I have a 98+JDM spec type r with a 4.7 and get 29-31 as long as I keep it city and little hwy. also running a stock ITR airbox and tube with a k&n filter.

And that's using ac 50% of the time. And a few runs at the local 1/8 mile.

I live where summers are 100 degrees so I tend to see better fuel economy and overall efficiency of my motor in the winter time.

the previous page idea of new exhaust and header raises a "spark" on all of this. i remember around 15 years ago reading import tuner en route to "max boost" (oh that crazy kid), these parts are able to add hp, but while adding hp this method you are freeing up exhausted air flow which decreases torque from the resulted loss of back pressure. essentially, the motor spins a little freer resulting from less friction derived from the back pressure...

now, less back pressure means more hp, but if your driving habits are moderate and you're NOT making use of that extra hp... at least until you need to go uphill, does that mean you will benefit from better mpg?

- back pressure
- torque
+ more available hp
+ reserved driving
= mpg??

I have a 97 Civic EX coupe with an ebay short ram and removed the cat. The best mileage I have gotten out of it was last summer on very hot day. 38mpg. And this was driving from Milwaukee to Chicago. Anyone who drives through Chicago knows I wasn't out on a Sunday cruise, more like Indy 500.

Normally I get around 35 to 36 freeway. My Dad took this car to Iowa a few times and was boasting ~40mpg but I would be surprised to find out he hit WOT at any point.

Did the hot weather attribute to my increase in mileage? Maybe. But overall I get much better mileage out of this car than it did brand new over 15 years ago. The easier you make the airflow entering and exiting the motor, the better mileage you will get, period.

When I bought my 05 Civic Hybrid, I could hardly hear it running. So I went to an exhaust shop and the owner lifted the car and cut off the muffler. When he lowered the rack I started the car and said "Now that's what I'm talking about". He put a piece of tail pipe and nice stainless tip and away I went. Sounds great but not supper loud. MPG is also good @ around 38 mpg.
