Poll: New Engine....positive or negative effect on selling car?
Okay, so heres the story. I have a 2000 GS-R that I bought in 2004. I blew the motor at 75,000. The Acura dealership installed a brand new motor bought directly from the acura dealership. The motor has 40,000 on it now and the body has 115,000. The car has minor dents and dings but Im looking to sell the car for 7000.
Does having the newer engine make the care more appealing to the buyer?? Having it bought new and installed at Acura makes it a more credible swap, right?? I also have paperwork proving so.
Obviously, I want to sell the car for the most I can, but how does the general public (You guys) look at this? Positive or negative effect?

i think since it was installed by acura, and you have receipts, it is definitely to your benefit.
But I would also be concerned for the health of the current engine, since the last one was blown.
Who blew the last engine and who has been putting the miles on the new engine?
edit: i suck at reading, you blew it. anyways, driving habits would be a concern for people i think now.

well of course a new block is gonna be more appealing since it gaurantees the potential buyers that it has a lot of life left (while they do not know your driving habits or if you beat on it a lot)

I would hope so....The body has a few dents and dings...but nothing serious. Interior is in great condition. My only thought is that since the engine has been messed with, it will bring down value, even if its new. I may be wrong though.

Post the car forsale in the hondamarketplace
I don't think that will hurt the potential sale of your car.. There is buyers and people on here who could give a **** less.. People that don't know what a GSR is,etc
And for the people that do know there info or a potential buyer.. I don't believe they will care the engine has been messed with..
Goodluck with your sell..!

If I were looking at that car, the new engine would not mean much at all. I would think that you blew the first one in 75k and the new one has 40k. Therefore the new engine could already have issues. I would perform a compression and leakdown test on that engine just like any other used car.
How did you blow the first engine? Was it neglect, abuse, stupidity, etc. or a manufacturing issue? Was it covered under an extended warranty?

it was stupidity.....I got the car not knowing anything about them. Put on a cold air intake and hydro locked which drastically weakened the engine

I guess its personal, but I dont think I would by a car that was completely dissembled. I would rather just search to find one with low miles, that wasnt driven by someone that hydrolocked it, or anything of that matter that was user related.
If it was my first project car, I think I would be more inclined though - I guess it depends on who youre selling it to.

i dont think ur gonna get 7000 for the car. the kbb listed the gsr for about 6 grand nowadays. unless u find some kid with 7 grand in his pocket.

As long as you list the reason why the first engine blew, you should be ok. Driving through water with a cold air intake is not necessarily "abuse" as much as it is being absent minded. Just tell ppl you bought the car with the aftermarket intake and didn't realize there was any danger - so you now have the stock intake on - right? Right?? Seriously, put that car back to stock as much as possible when selling.
I sold a car once that I had put, not one - but TWO engines in. Something had broken on my cooling system that blew the first motor. Nissan installed a reman engine, however they neglected to replace the faulty parts on the cooling system. The second motor lasted about 100 miles until it too went up in smoke. Nissan then replaced the motor - again - (of course the idiots told Nissan the motor was defective so they didn't have to pay for another) and they finally fixed the coolant system. Drove the car 3 more yrs and sold it no problem.
The biggest concern most buyers might have is that the new engine wont last - but since you've out 40k miles on it, then they should have no fears that the new engine wont last.

Thanks...I was thinking the same thing. The car runs great and everything is functional. When I hydrolocked, I knew about the danger but didnt really think it would happen to me, but it did .

When I look at buying cars, I always shy away from cars with a new engine, but since you bought it and had it installed from Acura, I wouldnt see it as a problem.
